City Affair.
A large Dumber of the dry goods com
mission merchants of this city have agreed
to close their stores on and after to-day at 4
o'clock and on Saturday at 3 o'clock P. M.,
until September 1, 1870.
Yesterday afternoon the Vigilant Steam
Engine made a trial at half-past 3 o'clock, at
Urond and Fitzwater streets. According to
the statements of some of the members of
the company, a stream of water wan run
through a lg-inch nozzle the distance of 251
feet, while according to the measurement of
others the distance was only 2:r feet. After
E laying for thirty minutes the piston-rod
roke, and all further experiments ceased for
the time.
At a joint meeting of the Board of Health
and Guardians of the Toor yesterday the
following was referred to the Committee on
Hospital of the Almshouse, to report at a
subsequent meeting:

Knight's Lauding, California.
Representative Washburn, of Massachu
setts, declines re-fleetion.
The break in the French cable proves to
be off the southwest corner of Sable Island.
The National Executive Conimuteeof the
Union League met in Washington yesterday.
Some amendments to the San Domingo
treaty were sent to tho Senate yesterday by
the President.
Certificates have been awarded the can
didates on the Conservative ticket in the
IticLmond election. The election will be
contested.
Virginia City, Nevada, is experiencing
quite wintry weather. On Saturday three
incLes of snow fell, and yesterday it was
freezing.
The Rhode Island Legislature met yes
terday. At the Republican caucus II. 13. An
thony was nominated for re-election to the
United Stales Senate.
The reciprocity trenty with the Sandwich
Islands was considered by the Senate in Ex
ecutive session yesterday. Its defeut is con
sidered almost certain.
Twelve prisoners broke out of the jail at
Wheeling, W. Va., yesterday, effecting their
escape in a singularly impudent manner.
Tour were recaptured.
Two brothers were murdered and throe
other members of the family badly wounded
in the western portion of Cumberland county,
N. C , by three unknown ruffian, on Wed
nesday morning last.
In the United States Senate yesterday
nftcrnoon, after the close of our report, the
bill to supply deficiencies in pay and mileage
of Representatives, etc., was passed. The
bill for the relief of Rollin White was passed
over the President's veto yeas, 41; nays, 13.
A bill relating to land grants to the Southern
Pacific Railroad of California was passed, an
amendment opening the lands for settlement
under the Homestead laws having been re
jected. In the House the tax bill was resumed and
disposed of as far as section K, no very im
portant amendments being adopted. One of
the amendments increases the minimum ef
wholesale liquor selling irom a quart to a
pallon. Another provides that any person
telling out bis business may transfer his spe
cial tax receipt to his successor, who may
continue the business without paying addi
tional special tax. The Speaker appointed
Messrs. Logan, bahenck, and olocuni the com
mittee to visit West Point.
Foreign Affairs.
Italy's army is to be thoroughly reor
ganized. ......
A disastrous drought is apprehended in
England.
A party of missionaries have been cap
tured by the natives ia South Africa and car
ried off into the interior. . . . . ,
A number of persons imprisoned as con
spirators against Napoleon's life have been
unconditionally liberated.
THE ASSEJLBLY. .
Yesterday Afternoon' Session.
The Assembly met yesterday afternoon at
the usual hour. Dr. Howard Crosby moved
that a committee of five be appointed to
ascertain what movements Had been made
by the churches towards the setting apart of
manses for the clergymen of the Church, and
that the presbyteries be instructed to furnish
all necessary information to such committee,
w hich was agreed to.
On motion of George Junkin, Esq., of
Philadelphia, the report of the Committee on
Finance, already published, was taken up and
explained at length by Kev. John Hall, D.D.,
of New York, who especially advocated the
plan ' of regular weekly contributions from
each member ol tne liesbytenan Uharch,
and the recommendations of the committee
respecting the five million fund ordered to
be raised at the meeting of the Assembly at
Pittsburg. '
Hon. W. E. Dodge, Treasurer of the Fi-
nance Committee, also spoke in advocacy of
the committee's report, giving interesting
details of the sums, both large and small,
received by him from different sources, and
expressing his entire conndence in the rais.

causes of benevolence would be strengthened
by the most energetio efforts in behalf of this
fund, and trusted that all the clergy of the
Church would present most strongly to their
