THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, MAY 31, 1870. 5 nusiCAXi Ann duaitiatic. The City AanHMMMf At thb Walnut Mr. Joseph Jefferson ap peared last night as ulUp Van Winkle." Many of this actor's admirers are Inquiring why he never, even for the sake of variety, gives "Kip" the go-by for a few nights, and tries some of the fine old comedy and farce characters In which he was once so famous, If only for the purpose of finding out whether he has not bo come bo much R'p Van Wlnkleized that he has forgotten how to play them. A sulliclcnt answer to this query could be found In the Im mense audience that crowded the Walnut last evening in spite of the dismal weather. "Rip" produces a rich return of both profit and honor, and bo long as the public engage In a scramble for scats when he is on the boards, it Is perhaps scarcely worth while to run tha risk of causing n laiiing oit in me 9 receipts for the sake of doins' Panglo.os," "Tobias Shortcut, ViBSOTY, "nr. or "WoodcocK." it would be a gratmcation, however, to many of Mr. Jefferson's admirers if he would at least give a ehort lively farce every evening after the main attraction has been disposed of, if only to show the playgoing pub lic of the present day what ho is able to do in that line. With regard to Mr. Jefferson's personation of "Rip Van Winkle," it is not necessary that we should make any extended remirks. It has been criticized so often that the public are probably tired of reading about it, even if they aro not tired of seeing it; and in despair'of being able to originate any new ideas with regard to it, it need only be eaid that Mr. Jeflereon acted the part laot evening with all his accustomed skill, and amid the emiles and tears of an audience that filled the house from parquet to dome. At the Akch Mr. John Rrousjham will appear this evening as "Dr. Savage" in his own comedy of Playing with Fire. At the Chesnut a variety entertainment is announced for this evening. The Riciiing8 English Opeiu Troupe will open on Monday next at the Academy ot Music, with Adam's comic opera of The 1'oftiUon of Lonjuticau. On Tuesday Meyerbeer's opera of The If ijw itots will be given for the benefit of Mr. S. liehrens, the musical director. ThU great opera has not been performed in this city for several years, and it has never been given in English. Since tbe Richlng troupe have added it to their repertoire, they havo performed it with great success in several cities ; and as unu sual care will bo bestowed upon Us production in this city, a very fine entertainment may be expected. Mr. Behrens is eo well known and so highly esteemed in this city that with such a benefit bill he can surely expect a crowded house. The sale of seats for the season will com mence on Thursday at Boner's, No. 1103 Chest nut street. The tickets for Mr. Behrcn's benefit will be ready to-day. Amateuk Drawing-room Concert. The entertainment given at this charmiug little place last evening "for the benefit of an invalid lady " was in all respects a grand success, the houte being filled with a highlv fashionable and Intellectual audience. The performance consisted of a grand vocal and instrumental concert, the following distinguished artists having kindly proflered their services: Miss Pauline Nininger, foprano, pupil of Pro fessor Isttore Barili; Miss Caroline McCaffrey, contralto; Mr. Thomas Burke, tenor; Mr. , baritone; Mr. Henry G. Tnuuder, pianist; Mr. William Stoll. violinist, and Mr. William G Dietrich, accompanist. The piano used far the occasion was "the Weber Grand Fiano, from the warerooms of J. A. Getze, No 1103 Chesnut street. It was admirably handled by Professors Thunder and Dietrich. The introductory violin solo, "Fantalsie la Favorite," by Mr. William Stoll, was neatly rendered, but lucked the essentials of an emi nently satisfactory performance. Flis "Polo naise was decidedly better, and wa3 given with the true ppirit of an artist. The solo, "The Way to Paradise, by Miss Caroline McCaffrey, was teuchlnEly rendered. Her voice is truly ex qi ' 'te and enunciation perfect. In the duet, 1 1 la V allea " she displayed Doth artistic exe cl.-.u and expression. This was followed by the descriptive ballad of "The Storm." than which nothing could have been more accept able, If we except her plaintive ballad of "God bless you," that elicited rapturous applause. The debut of Miss Pauline Nininger was the notable event of the evening. She la quite youthful, and dressed with exceeding good taste, ti rendition from Traviata she displayed tbe most careful and artistic cultivation. We omen most favorably of this young lady's career, and predict that she will in future fairly rival some of our most distinguished cantatrlces. ller accompanist was JSlgnor Darin. Mr. and Mr. 1 nomas Burke were very acceptable and acquitted themselves artistically. Mr. launder s piano solos were deservedly' ap plauded for their artistic execution, and the accompaniments of Mr. Dietrich to the several solos, vocal and instrumental, all that could have been desired. We noticed that Miss Pauline Nininger and Miss Caroline McCaffrey were the recipients of two magnificent bouquets, which were worthily bestowed and gracefully received. The audience retired about ten o'clock, both gratified and charmed with the entire entertain ment, wnicn doubtless conferred a similar plea cure oa iue wormy uenejiciare, CITY lTEltlg.
