THE ASSEMBLY.
YrMrnlny Afternoon's Hrnnlon.
The Assembly met at the usual hour yester
day afternoon. 1 he discussion on the ques
tion of an immediate election for membors of
the Board of Foreign Missions was continued
from tho morning session. Alter the discus-
pion, participated in by Elders William Ran
kin and Governor Pollock, tho latter a motion
was lost.
Dr. W. M. Paxton, of New York, then read
the report of the Standing Committee on
Domestic Missions. They report a balance
on hand of $V, 037 '"'J, and leave to the de
cision of the Assembly the question of the
location of the new board. They also recom
mend a liberal sustentation of the mission
aries in the employ of the board. A lengthy
and somewhat acrimonious debate between
Dr. Paxton and Dr. Musgrave then ensued.
The report was then proceeded with, the
resolutions attached thereto being taken up
(iitim. President McCosh, in the course
of the debate, made an earnest appeal in bo-
Lalf of tho increased compensation for minis
ters of the Church, and submitted a resolu
tion looking to that end by the collection of
statistics setting forth the present inade
quacy of ministerial remuneration, which
was referred to the Special Committee on
Sustenation Fund. Adjourned.

A correspondent in the Toronto Globe says
The Sault is, I think, the largest one in tho
world, except the Suez. The locks hold three
large vessels and a tug, and they can be got
through m less than an hour. A large number
of vessels have passed since 1 have been here,
the tug taking them up to Whisky Bay and
down to the lake, respectively. 1 he master,
Mr. Carleton, has held his office some years.
A military force is stationed here, consist
ing of about one hundred men. The barracks
are two-story buildings, painted white, and
have a very pretty effect. On the grass
n ound in front are four cannon, and a sen-
tj y can be seen walking up and down. It is
here that General Cook, commandant of tho
district, is now stopping. Several wharves in
different stages of decay lie m front of the
warehouses, and some miserable sheds, sur
rounded by half-breeds and negroes, line tho
shore.
On tho Canadian side the houses are not so
numerous; out mere is an excellent wiian,
which at the present moment is a scene of
considerable activity. There are some ad
mirable buildings in the village, which is the
eading place in the district ot Algoma. Mr.
Simpson has a fine house, looking on the
river, and the court-house, jail, custom
house, etc., are all handsome structures, built
of stone. The country lying at the back is
poorly settled, but is good land. It is covered
with thick undergrowth, and along the shore,
for half a mile inland, are large boulders of
various stones, granite, gneiss, etc., showing
that the place must have been under water at
one time. The place has, of course, as
sumed quite a lively air, in consequence of
the troops.
ST. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS.
The Proposed Canonization of the Discoverer
oi America.
rTViA "Poria "HfynJ. miViliaVioa f Via fnllnnrinry
Theltaliau journal, the Stendardo Caitotica,
at Genoa, states that fresh steps are being
taken at Rome to Ret the canonization of
Christopher Columbus agreed to. It may bo
remembered that, so far back as 18(55, two
laymen in France and Italy simultaneously,
though not in -concert, addressed the same
demand to the DZoly See. In the following
year, the Cardinal Archbishop of Uordeaux,
Mgr. Donnet, in whose metropolitan jurisdic
tion are found the t rencn Antilles, prayed
the Tope to lend a favorable ear to the above
petitions. Spain, in its turn, took the matter
up, and the Cardinal Archbishop of Burgos
fully joined in the prayer of nisi rencn col
league. It has been objected that this sub
ject could not be introduced without violating
the rules wisely laid down by rope Benedict
XIV. But this exception which would be
necessarily unique in the history of the
Church, since there are no more new worlds
to discover and subject to the Gospel seems
justified by the noble character of the man
for whom the honor of being placed upon
Catholio Altars is solicited. It is certain, too,
that Christopher Columbus possessed, in an
eminent degree, all the Christian virtues.
Bottero, who was secretary to St. Carlo Bor
romeo, gathered, during his two visits to
Spain, some very important evidence as to his
temperance, modesty, love of prayer, and his
horror of all that is dishonorable in the sight
of God.
