On Tuesday, June 7, Mr. S. Behrens, the musi
cal director, will have a benefit, when Meyer
beer's great opera of The JIuguenots will be
performed for the first time in this city In
Knglish, with all the members of the company
in the east, and with an augmented chorus and
orchestra. The performances of this opera by
the Kicbings troupe in the various cities they
liave visited have always excited much enthusi
asm, and our opera-goers may expect a more
than usually fine entertainment.

It baa long since become a settled fact that of all the
various sewing machines which have been offered to the

chines are laid aside and forgotten, this wonilorful inven
tion will hold a most important place in the family. We
hear a great doal about the simplicity of the various sew
ing machines whioh are so loudly praised by the manufac
turers and tbeir agents; but we think that tho testimony
of a lady in this city, who has been totally blind since
childhood, that "after testing several different makes of
sewing machines she selected a 'Grover A Biikor'
because of ihe ease tcith which she coul I operate ami manage
it," should settle that point in the minds of all who have
heretofore been in doubt. We do not wonder that these
maohines are sold in every part of the civilized world.
How many a mother's heart Aiubeen made glad by having
one of these valuable labor-saving instruments, and how
many more fill be made glad, now that thoy are sold on
such easy terms as to be within reach of all! And not
nly that, but we learn farther that they are delivered

purchasers, in all parts of the country. Who shall say that
we do not live in an age of wonders ?

Many persons, in considering tbe subject of Life Insn-
ranee, are at a loss to understand bow it is possible that
Companies, charting such low premiums, can alfo'd to
carry sucb heavy riBks, year after year, and pay such large
sums of money at the death of the insured snms so dis
proKHtionate to tbe amount of the premiums received.

close and accurate calculation; and as it is known, by
taxed snd inevitable law, bow many out of every thousand
persons die at a certain age in each yeur, it is a matt er of
mere tignres to determine what rate of premium shall be
charged to cover the loss that must certainly be paid at
beneath of the Insured. Besides, suoh persons forget
the cumulative power of money; tbe taterast aooruing
from etch annual payment ia reinvested each year, thus
continually increasing itself in a compound ratio, and
adding to the permanent asBnts of the Company.
In addition to this the capital of Life Insurance Com
panies is not used for speculative purposes, but judi
ciously invested by a competent iinanoe committee in
wellselected stocks, bonds, or mortgagoa, which almost
invaiiably yield a hanasome interest.
'I be stability of Lite Insurance is evident from tbe fact
that amidst ail the commercial revulsions and general
bankruptcy that have at times swept over the land,
bringing consternation and dismay to mercantile houses
and business firms, it has been rare to rind any Life Com
pany being overwhelmed in similar disasters, aa there is
scarcely a probability of failure, if the rates of premium
are properly calculated, and the income judloiously in
vested. It has been said by an eminent writer on this
subject : "Ttere is nothing in the commercial world
which approaches even remotely to the security of a
well-established and prudently managed Life Insurance
Company."
A Lile Insurance Company is far preferable to a savings
bank, because it accomplishes all that a savings bank does,
ana more besides, it, too, takes care of tne depositor's
money, and allows him interest npon his deposits. Tue
company engages, in consideration of a certain sum of
money paid to it annually, during the life of the depo
sitor, to pay a much larger sum to his family after his
decease, li t it occur when it will. Moreover, money in a
savings bank is too easily drawn out to gratify some pass
ing whim or desire, and is perhaps withdrawn and ex
pended after a short effort. Had this money been pnt
into a life policy it would have remained a treasure to the
family. Besides, money in a savings bank is liable to be
attached lor debt, while a life policy cannot be. It re
quires time for money to acouinulate in a savings bank.
Lite is uncertain bow does anyene know bo will bave
time to accumulate it? And have not those dependent
upon bim a right to demand that amid all the dangers and
uncertainties of life they shall be protected from the
consequences of an irreparable loss in his sudden doath?
Ibe chances that one's life will fall within a year is two
per cent., tne chance that your borne will burn during
that time is less than one quarter of one per cent., then
why insure tbe latter and neglect the former 1 Life Insur
ance is not like tire insurance, an expanse, but s sure In

Lite Insurance is based npon the universal law of com
pensation, which givea us either the blessings of along
life, or the pleasing assurance tint our loved ones
will be provided for when we can no longer supply
their wants.
Thousands of families are growing np whose sole
support is contingent npon the duration
of tbe father's life; should he die, the income
muct cease, the children be withdrawn from
nhool, and the industry of every member of the
family be made available, perhaps in widely scattered
localities, in order to eke out s probably precarious ex
istence. It will generally be admitted that the Divine word, "If
any man provide net for his own, especially for thuss of
his own bouse, be bath denied the faith, and is worse than
an infidel," applies not only to provision for ono's family
during his liteibut sIbo to some provision for them after his
death. Clearly he is not justified in calculating npon
tbe beneficence of relatives and friends to support his
surviving wife and children. And still more clear is it
that be haa no right to cast them as burden upan the
publio.
Kvery reason which makes it a man's duty to provide for
his family while he is liviifg, acts with greater force ti
secure for tbem a oomfortable subsistence after be shall
have been removed irom them; and this duty should be
Eromptly performed while his health is good, for stter it
as failed snd disease set in, it will be too late to get in
sured, and then his family will lose the provision he might
bave made for tbem, if death should overtake him.
THE DUTY OF INSURING YOUR LIFE.
1. To place those dependent upon you for support at
once beyond the possibility of suffering want in the event
of your sadden death.
S. To have your mind relieved from anxiety as to the
future of your family, if your present inoome suffices only
