The Athletics beat the Pastime of Balti
more on Saturday, by a score of 32 to 10.
The 8outb 1'enn Ilose Company returned to
this city n Saturday evening, from their trip
to Norwich, Bridgeport and New York, In all
of which places they met with a warm reception.
Joseph Preston, a native of Delaware, agei
seventy-eight years, who was a soldier in the
war of 1812. died yesterday at the Pennsylvania
Hospital, where he was admitted several days
fciuce.
A horse attached to a carriage, containing a
man, his wife, and two children, ran away yes
terday afternoon at Fifth street and Girard
avenue. The carriage was upset and broken.
The occupants were badly bruited.
Officers Curry and McLaaKblln, In passing
tho house of Mr. D. L. Woods, No. 2100 Arch,
street, about 4 o'clock yesterday morning, dis
covered that the front door was open. The
officers went in, and upon searching the house
found it had been completely ransacked. The
family were ab eut, havlug gone on a visit to
Conshohocken.
On Saturday afternoon a two-year old child
of Mr. Thomas Nugeut was Instantly killed at
Eleventh and Coates street by being run over by
a heavily loaded ice wngou belonging to the
Knickerbocker Ice Company. The Coroner
held an Inquest and a verdict of accidental death
was rendered. The father of the child lives la
Eleventh below Coates.
Rev. Robert A. Brown was last evening la
stalled pastor of the Trinity Presbyterian
Church, Frank road road and Cambria street.
Rev. A. M. Jelly, Moderator of the Presbytery,
presided and proposed the constitutional ques
tions to the people. Kcv. Alfred Nevin preached
the sermon. Kcv. Matthew Novklrk gave the
charge to the pastor, and Kcv. William u. John
stone gave the charge to the people. A large
congregation was in atteudance.
The blessing of a banner belonging to the
Catholic Society connected with St. Alphonsus'
Church, Fourth and Keed streets, was the occa
sion yesterday of a procession composed of the
German Catholic societies of the city. They
parnded with banners, Mags, and bands of music,
to the number of about a thousand, from St.
Peter's Church, at Fifth street and Girard ave
nue, and Holy Trinity, at Sixth and Spruce
streets, to Su Alphonsus' Church, where the
ceremony of blessing the banner took place.
On Saturday evening a large number of
journeymen coopers assembled at the hall.
Eighth and Locust streets, to hear reports and
addressee on the present condition of the trade,
and the hardships experienced by some owing
to their connection with trade unions.
The reports indicated that in some of the
establishments employers had refused to give
work to men belonging to trade unions, and the
hands had been discharged because of their
connection with such organizations.
The alarm last evening about 9 o'clock was
caused by the burning of a two-story stable on
Olive street, above Broad, occupied by Budd
Doble. The flames originated in the second
story of the building, aud burned until the in
terior of the structure was pretty well de
stroyed. There was a large number of horses
and vehicles in the stable, all of which were
rescued. The structure belonged to Joseph
Harrison, aud was valued at 1 10, 000. The
dwelling on the east of the stable suffered by
water to the amount of $500.
The alarm of fire about 9 o'clock last even
ing was caused by the burning of 8aihuel Ellis'
frame stable, at Fifty-first street and Lancaster
avenue; also, a number of sheds belonging to
the Park Drove Yard, in the immediate vicinity.
1 he loss is estimated at $ 2500.
Yebterday afternoon, Mr. Peter Malone was,
ns is alleged, struck with a brick on the head by
Bridget Burk, and 6o seriously injured that his
death is momentarily anticipated. So far as
t ould be ascertained. Patrick Burk and his wife
Bridget occupied the first lloor of house No. 105
Bread street, and Peter Malone and family an
upper story. The. parties have not for a long
time been on good terms, and on Saturday last,
as Malone's daughter alleges. Dr. Price, who
w as attending one of Malone s little boys, who
is sick, vas refused admittance to and driven
away Irom the house by Mrs. Burk. Yesterday,
Dr. Price came, having been assured by Malone
by letter that he would be protected, to visit the
child. ; Malone went down stairs to meet him,
having been informed that the doctor was at
Bread and Arch streets, and, while passing out,
Mrs. Burk threw a piece of a brick at him. He
returned with Er. Price and was going up stairs,
when Bridget Burk threw a large piece of brick
at him, striking him on the right side of the
head, back of the ear. Dr. Price dressed the
wound, aud pronounced it to be of the most
serious character. Mr. and Mrs. Burke were
both arrested and locked up in the Fourth Dis
trict Station House.
Domenllo Affairs.
Gold closed on Saturday at 114j!.
The tax bill is to be reported to-day.
The O'Neill Fenialns intend to co-operate
with the Red River rebels. ,
Golcouria's two companions, Diego and
Gasper Aguero, were executed in Havana on
Saturday. . .
During the fourteen days of this month the
public debt was reduced by five and a half mil
lions. Paterson, N. J., silk manufacturers are en
gaged in an enterprise for raising raw silk in
California. '.
The Committee on Foreign Relations are
said to favor giving the proposed Pacific cable
$500,000 a year for twenty years, instead of
lands.
An expedition of 300 Cubans left New York
on Saturday by a steamer bound for San
Domingo. They took 7000 rifles, six large guns,
uniforms, etc.
Hon. A. J. Rogers attempted to speak at a
political meeting in New York on Saturday
night, but was suppressed by a shower of bad
eggs and stones.
It would appear that the Eureka disaster
was caused by neglect of instructions by the
conductor and engineer of the freight train.
The former has been arrested.
A party of Indians, a few days since, entered
a cabin on the Nebraska river, 120 miles north
of Sioux City, shot the settler's wife and his
little son and carried off his daughter. It is
feared that that region will be depopulated.
At a meeting of the Cabinet on Saturday
Indian affairs were discussed, and it was decided
that the Big Horn expedition should not be al
lowed to proceed pending the negotiations with
Red Cloud and the other Sioux chiefs now on
the way thither.
' Foreign Affairs.
Discussion of Papal infallibility in the (Ecu
menical Council has commenced.
The bodies of the victims of the Greek bri
gand outrage have arrived in London.
Nothing has been decided respecting the
constitution of the new French Cabinet.
The Duke of Grammont is spoken of ascer
tain to be the new French Foreign Minister.
An official contradiction has appeared of the
report that the French Government would de
mand the extradition of Gustave Flourens.
The tecond of the series of races betweea
the Sappho and the Cambria has resulted in an
other victory for the Sappho, and a difficulty.
' OBITUARY. '
Hon. Thomas Irwin.
The telegraph announces the death of lion.
Thomas Irwin, ex-United States Judge of the
Western district of this State. The deceased
was a native of this 8tate, which he represented
la Congress from 1SW to 1831. In the latter
year he was appointed to the Western judgeship
by President Jackson, an oHlee which he held
for many years.
Hew. CleaneatJ Lm Ward.
A telegraphic despatch announces the death
of the lion. Clement L. Ward, of Tioga couuty,
Pa., having taken place on Saturday morning,
of paralysis, at Towanda. Mr. Ward was well
known throughout the State as having been one
of the foremast settlers In the northern tier, and
as a brilliant 'writer and speaker. Ha took a
deep interest in all public measures, and was the
honored recipient of many poaitious of honor
and trust, ins library was very extensive ana
ids hoej-lUlitT at tin mansion proverbial. lit
wss a printer by profession, and amassed a large
fortune by his investments in land and the
building of rsllronds. He was a War Democrat,
and was Chairman of the Democratic 8tate Cen
tral Committee in 1864. He was largely Inte
rested in the Atlantic and Great Western Rail
road. His daughter married Hon. William II.
Miller, of Harrisburg.
