The Society of the Song of St. George
celebrated the anniversary of St. George,
patron saint of England, on Saturday.
A large meeting of journeymen stove
find hollow-ware moulders was held on Satnr
dny evening at the Asnistance Engine Ilall,
Sixth street, below Coates.
A bold attempt was made to rob the
Sonthwark Bank on Saturday night, but hap
pily the thieves were discovered by one of
watchmen and their designs frustrated.
Jeremiah Mahony, aged thirty-eight
years, was knocked down yesterday afternoon
by a horse and wagon at Broad street and
Susquehanna avenue, and seriously injured.
Yesterday afternoon the Harmony Fire
Company, whilst returning from the fire at
Twenty-fifth and Spruce streets, was attacked
near Twenty-fourth, and pelted with stones,
brickbats and other missiles.
Lieutenant Killachy, of the Sixth district,
met with a pitinful accident, on Saturday af
ternoon, at the Philadelphia City Guar.ls'
Armory, on Broad street. While running
ficroHS the room his head came in contact with
a parallel bar, causing him to fall senseless
upon the floor.
On Saturday night, about 11 o'clock,
John Kurtz, residing in the upper section of
the tity, was walking along St. John street,
near Beaver, in company with ft lady, when
he accosted a man named JohnVollcker in re
ference to some impropriety. Kurtz then
passed on, but was soon after approached by
Volleker,who it is alleged drew a knife from
his pocket and inftictefl a stab in his (Kurtz's)
left shoulder. Volleker also struck at him a
second time without effect. An alarm was
immediately given, during whichVolleker ran
into a house near by and secreted himself in
the loft, where he was found by Sergeant Tap
pen, who took him to the lock-up.

GENERALITIES.
Social Prlrllearea.
The practical questions of social privileges
involved in the Civil Rights bill have never been
tested in Maryland. Into the city railroad cars
in Baltimore a negro Is not allowed to enter; he
must stand outside upon the platform, If he rides
at all. An attempt was made to put this matter
to the test of the law on the 12th instant. A
cslored citizen, accompanied by two white men,
seated himself la a car, and declined to be put
out unless by force, which the conductor did
not attempt, the colored man being deaf to mere
remonstrances. But as the President of the
railroad company has since admonished con
ductors to follow out the old rules and expel
colored persons attempting; to occupy seaU, it is
supposed that nothing but experience at the
hands of the law will awaken commoa sense or
decent humanity among the horse-car officials
ot Baltimore. Let them take advice from the
rich corporations of the kind in other places,
who yielded this point of prejudice some years
ago
Romance In Real Life.
A little romance of a sprained anklo comes
from Kt. Louis, in which a young clerk, a young
lady school-teacher, aud a dog are the leading
features. The clerk and the school-teacher, it
appears from previous concatenation of circum
stances, had fallen desperately in love. One
evening, as the couple were proceeding to
church, a ferocious dog jumped over a teuce
aud "went lor" the lady. Here was a chauce
for chivalry, and the young man gallantly im
proved it. Throwing himself in front of his
lair one he gave the attacking monster a blow
which sent him flying with yelps of ignominious
defeat; but in the very moment of victory the
young man full and spfalned his ankle. It was
now the turn for womanly heroism to display
itself. The 6chool-teacher was a girl with no
nonsense about her. She at once ordered a
hack, helped her lover in, accompanied him
to his room, bathed and dressed his ankle,
watched over him all night, and naturally
enough weut for a fricud and minibtcr next day,
and married her man in the evening. Wliat
could be a more satisfactory termination of the
story than this ?
A New El Dorado.
Montana, with a c elihtf ul climate of a mean
temperature, similar, with a smaller range of
varation, to Philadelphia, or St. Joseph, Mo.,
oilers great advantages to Immigrants. It pos
sesses abundance of large timber, principally
pine, flr, cedar, and hemlock; yields of wheat
50, of oata 75 to 100, and of potatoes o00 to 400
bushels to the acre. No better pasturage for
horses, cattle, and sheep can be found through
out the year. Hogs and hens find abundant food.
Beneath the surface there is bituminous coal,
brick clay, fire clay, iron and copper, gold and
6ilvcr quartz, while -placer mining yet remains
profitable to those who havo not facilities for
penetrating deeply the bowels of the earth.
There is room there for women as well as for
men; good housekeepers receive from $75 to
100, aud ordinary kitchen servants $50 to $75
per month; and we ure told that "to-day immi
grants will find in Montana all the comforts,
conveniences, and many of the luxuries of a
hiph civilization, with comparatively no hard
ships." The tJrenteat Organ In the World.
,The following particulars respecting the new
London organ, said to be the largest iu the
world, we find in tbe musical column of the
independent: "The organ just finished, and
upw putting together for the new Koyal Albert
Hall of Arts and Sciences, iu London, will pro
jilily take rank as the largest in the world. It
is constructed, under the supervision of Sir
Michael Costa, by Willis, the builder of the
famous organ In St. George's Hall, Liverpool,
and cost i.10,000, or about the same as the reut
or(;an in the Boston Music Hall. In the compari
son of organs, figures are always more or less de
ceptive. An instrument of 50 registers may be
really larger and more powerful than one of 75,
and ingeuious mechanical appliances (iu which
the Boston organ is peculiarly rich) may pro
duce all the "fleet and variety which used to be
obtained by the multiplication of sounding stops.
We presume, however, that few of the modern
improvements havo been overlooked by Mr.
Willis in this new master-work. It has 111 com
plete register! and 133 draw-stops. The otber
great organs of tbe world are those at Ulm, with
100 registers; Prague, 7a; Lubeck, W; Fraukfort-on-the-Main,
74; Rotterdam, W; Haarlem, ttO;
Freiburg, 01; fit. Euslache, in Paris, t7; St. Sul-
pice. Tnrls. flfl; St. Georcre'i, Donraoter, 8rt; ft.
(ieorpe's Hull, Liverpool, 100; Boston, 84. In
variety and brilliancy none of these, perhaps, is
superior to tbe Hon ton organ. Some points of

they are arranged on a peculiar plan, which
enables the perlormer t effect an extraordinary

The tone of the new organ, so far as it has been
tried, is said to be admirable, and the mechani
cal action is described as a marvel of perfection."
