City Affair.
A meeting of colored citizens of the
Twentieth ward war held last erening at the
pnblio bonne Girard avenue and Alder street.
William Randolph was chosen President,
John Hall Vice-President, John Traverse
Secretary, and John Clowers Treasurer.
Reports were received from the committee
on arrangements, showing that it had been
decided to wear black snits, with bine glazed
raps having the nnmber of the ward on the
front, encircled by a wreath. It was also
recommended that the Central Executive
Committee be requested to invite his Honor
Mayor Fox to participate in the parade.
A meeting of the colored citizens of the
Thirteenth ward was held at the hall corner
Franklin and Buttonwood streets. Isaiah
White acted as chairman, Samuel Crawford
Secretary, and Henry Johnson Treasurer.
Manuel Johnson was appointed Chief Mar
filial, Isaiah White first aid, and Thomas John
eon second aid.
A young woman was discovered about 7
o'clock last evening by Offloer Dann, at
Thirty-fourth street and Darby road, acting
in a very strange manner. She was taken in
charge and conveyed to the station house,
when it was discovered she had taken oxalio
acid, a bottle containing the same having
been found upon her. Medical aid was then
rendered, after which she was removed to the
Almshouse. A letter was found on her, say
ing that she was tired of life, and requesting
that her body should be given to the doctors.
A spirited trot took place yesterday
afternoon at Suffolk Fark, between the brown
gelding (slippery and the sorrel mare Nellie.
The two were matched for a purse of $500,
mile heats; best three in five to wagons.
Nellie was driven by William II. Doble, and
Slippery by John Lovett.
Nellie won the race in three straight heats.
In the Court of Common Pleas room last
evening the ' "Philadelphia Temperance Re
form" held a publio meeting, under the aus
pices of Philadelphia Division, No. 1, Sons of
Temperance. Addresses were made by Rev.
Dr. Cook, Rev. Thomas Finley, William J.
Mullen and others. Meetings will be held
every Friday evening at the same place. A
publio meeting waa also held in Dr. Shep
pard's church, Buttonwood, between Fifth
and Sixth streets. Several addresses were
made.
Domestic Affair.
Gold closed yesterday at 113.
Ex-Governor King died at St. Louis yes
terday. .
The House is still engaged on the Tarifl
question.
The new Minister from Hayti presented
his credentials to the President yesterday.
The Darien Canal treaty has been re
jected by the Colombian Congress.
Four men were arrested at Montreal on
the arrival of the American train on Monday
evening on suspicion of Fenianism.
The Postmaster-General made a number
of postal changes in Pennsylvania yesterday.
The Ways and Means Committee had a
cession yesterday, when the Funding bill was
considered, without any result being arrived
at, however.
A couple of witnesses were before the
Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday, in re
cord to the alleged attempts to bribe Senators.
Nothing was proved.
A bill was passed in the Senate yesterday
prescribing an oath of office to be taken by
ex-Confederates not disqualified by the four
teenth amendment.
The war steamer Michigan, lying at Erie,
Pa., is being put in readiness for aotaal ser
vice. It is thought that this has something
to do with the Fenian movement on Canada.
Forrlan Affairs.
Bismark is better.
There is a ministerial crisis in Wallachia.
A ballot agitation has commenced in Ba
varia. Russia has signed the Burlingame treaty,
and agreed to a fair settlement of the frontier
question.
The refusal of our Supreme Court to
reopen the legal-tender cases'is applauded by
the London 1'ott.
J Queen Victoria and Princess Alexandra
had a narrow escape from death yesterday
while driving.
The plebiscitum decree, and an Imperial
letter explaining the proposed changes, will
appear to-morrow.
Daru denies, through his organ, thut he
and Buffet resigned because of a letter from
the Duke d'Aumalo.
The Marathon brigands refuse to give up
their prisoners or to surrender, although they
are surrounded by troops.
Fenians having threatened vengeance
against the Pall MaU Gazette, the oflioe of
that journal has been placed under the pro
tection of a heavy police force.

OBITUARY
A nut In A. Klna.
Hon. A. A. King, a prominent jurist of Mis
souri, died yenterday in fct. Louis, aged slxty
Tilne years. He was born in Sullivan county,
Tennessee; studied law, and waa admitted to ttio
bar on becoming of age. lie removed to Mis
souri iu I80O, and in 1831 was elected to the
Legislature of that State, and was returned for a
second term two years luter.
In 183'J he was appointed a circuit judge,
which position ho held until 1848, when he was
elected Governor of the tit ate, his term of ollice
expiring in 18M. In 18(W he was again placed
upon the bench, but was elected during the
same year as Representative from Missouri to
the Thirty-eighth Congress, serving upon the
Judiclury Committee.
