(colored) of New York will visit thin city and
take part in the colebration on the Inst.,
in honor of the passage of tho fiftoenth
amendment.
A mass meeting of the colored citizens of
the (Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth, and
Nineteenth wards was held last evening at
Harrison's Skating l'ark, J Toward and Uerks
street. An organization was perfected by
the election of Jtobert B. Williams, Pre
fiident; George W. Whittakor, Vice-President;
and George W. Moore, Secretary. Several
addresses were made, and the occasion was
enlivened with music by the Deltuonico Hand.
A large meeting of the Order of Knights
of St. Crispin was held last evening at their
hall, Seventh street, above Chestnut, when
reports were received from the different
manufacturing establishments, showing that
the men were receiving tho wages doniandod
for their labor. James Patton, John Oao,
G. r. Braley, A. J. Hay, and Thomas Phil- 1
lips were then elected as tho representatives
of the Grand Lodge of this State to the Inter
national Grand Lodge, which meets in Boston
on the l'Jth inst.
Last evening a grand gathering of tho
friends of temperance, nnder tho auspices of
the Young Men's Christian Association of the
First Presbyterian Church, on Washington
Square, took place. A largo number of por
tions were in attendance. Addresses were
delivered byliev. A. A. Willits, D. J)., ltev.
J. L. Withrow, and tho pastor, ltev. II. John
son, D. D. The addresses wero interspersed
with choice selections of musio by the choir.
Tho twenty-fourth anniversary of tho
Grand Temple of Honor and Temperance
was celebrated last evening at the Academy
of Musio. The house was well tilled with an
intelligent and appreciative audience. On
the stage were the officers of tho Grand Tem
ple in regalia, and sections of tho Cadets of
Honor and Temperance, commanded by
Grand Governor William S. Stiles, also in
regalia, seated in rows, and presenting a very
pleasing sight. During tho evening the
Edwin Forrest and Frankford Cornet Bands
and the Irma Glee Club furnished delighf ul
instrumental anl vocal musio. Cohocksink
and other Temples during the proceedings
marched in with musio playing. Grand
Worthy Templar John Shedden presided, and
addresses were made by the Chairman,
Thomas M. Coleman, Esq., llev. A. H. Sym
bower, ltev. William B. Culhss, Daniel Cal
fuss, and llev. B. L. Agnow.

rank has been agreed by the House Naval
Committee.
Commissioner Delano decidos that hotol
bills incurred by persons travelling on busi
ness may bo deducted in income returns.
A court-martial is ordered to convene on
Thursday next, to investigate tho charges
against Commander John II. Upshur.
No impediment will be placed in tho way
of the Big Horn Mining Expedition by tho
Government. It is to start from Cheyenne
the first week in May.
Senator Sumner introduced yesterday a
Postal bill providing, among other matters,
for a reduction of postage to one cent for
naif-ounce letters and the abolition of the
franking privilege.
The Senate Naval Committee are of opi
nion that applications from retired naval oiti
cers for restoration to the active list ought
not to bo entertained unless upon the recom
mendation of tho Executive Department.

Tho new Austrian Ministry have an
nounced a liberal policy.
Senor Olozaga is tho new President of
the Spanish Council of State.
Very severe sentences are being pro
nounced upon the Barcelona rioters.
Another Mazr.inian conspiracy is in pro
gress within the Papal territory. Forty arrests
have been made.
The party of the Left have determined to
vote negatively at tho plebiscite and to circu
late manifestoes against its object.

The National Academy of Design gave its
grand upriDg reception last evening, and rivalled
the fashion and wealth of the display for which
preceding seasons have been remarkable.
People do not go there because they love art
and want to discuss it, but because it is tho thing.
Of course you havo to tattle about art to somo
extent, but if you can wrap the web of what
you have to tsay In that convenient phrase,
"you know, you know," you will pass muster.
It is only proper, however, to give the reception
the peculiar kind of eredit that is its due. For
Instance, no public assemblage held during
the winter displayed more rich
and expensive dresses, a more utter recklessness
as to how startling effects ih costume were pro
duced, so that they were produced. At no ball
or opera of the entire season has there been so
dazzling a display ot jewelry ana toilette auda
city. Tho rooms and staircases were crowded
After orce having passed a certain spot there
was no repassing it without going the rounds of
a very large circle, i ashion and wealth, how'
ever, were not tho only worlds that were reprc
sented. The world of intellect was thero in
eome force. Mr. Bryant, the poet and editor,
eat or stood alone the greater part of tho even
Ing, his clastic head and beard suggestive of a
majestic rock past which frivolous waters were
bouncing. Dr. Bellows was also there, contem
plating the pictures and the crowd with that
ccniallty which enters so largely Into his roll
gion. These exceptions gavo something of a
dignified counterbalance to a celebrutlon lu
which butterflies love to bask.

Good Friday was religiously observed, from
the eaters of hot cross buns to the worshippers
at St. A)1au's. The theatres were poorly at
tended. Tho Stock, Gold, Produce, and Mer
chants' Exchanges and tho Board of Cotton
Brokers suspended thulr usual business meetings.
Since the day was not made a legal holiday, of
course tho Government olHcos, banking institu
tions, and counting-rooms were kept open, but
many places of business were closed, and had
placarded over their doors an announcement
relative to tho sanctity of the day. With all tho
wickedness in high life as well as low for which j
New York is notorious, it Is a city In which
religious forms are observed to a vast extent. J

who Is held In a kind of worship by every heart
which beats In a boy's roundabout, is going to
lecture on Byron before an audience which he
boasts will bo mainly composed of old Knicker
bocker families. Since he occupied "Tho
Kanche, Gerrard's Cross, Bucks," Captain
Ecld has experienced many ups and downs,
and, in the course of a life of vicissitudes, has
gone through several fortunes. The last time at
which he distinguished himself at fortune
losing was a few weeks ago, when his magazine
venture exploded. In that ho sank no less than
twenty-flvo thousand dollars. The magazine, it
will be remembered, was called Onward. It
might better havo been termed "Downward." At
present the Captain is a wiry-looking gontlemen
of about fifty, with prominent white teeth, a
nervous manner, a gushing, expansive, and
polite address, and obvious consciousness of his
reputation. He thinks Byron one of the most
unaffected and lovable of men, a chining exam
ple of scandalized Innocence.

The letters of Mrs. Calhoun, which have como
to light during tho McFarland trial, are natu
rally exciting a good deal of comment. She has
managed to get all her friends by tho ears, and
indulges in an exquisite simile in which she
typifies hcrcorrespondential connection with tho
Tribune , figuring herBclf as a warbler around
whose feet Mr. Greeley has attached a string.
It seems to be the general opinion that she has

Tim great Art Balk ok tub Season. Mr.
DHuyvetter's tine collection of paintings Is now
arranged for exhibition at the galleries of B. Scott,
Jr., No. HIT Chesnut street, and as the sale is to take
place on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, they
should receive the early attention of picture buyers
and lovers of the fine arts. This collection Is re
markable for the largo percentage of very superior
works that it contains, among the most noticeable
of which may be named No. 61, "Waterfall In Nor
way by Moonlight," by A. Wust; No. 144, "The
Shepherd's .Rest," landscape by C. F. De Vogel, and''
cattle by K. T .Verboeckhoven; No. 47, "Royal
Entertainment," by Backolowitz (this is the largest
painting by this artist ever brought to this country,
and It is a very beautiful work); No. i:io,
"Waterfall on the River Olonneu, in Norway,"
by J. Jacobs; No. 60, "Upsetting the Basket,"
by E. Bridau. This is a gorgeous flower picture, that
Is worthy of special notice. The most Important
pictures In the collection, however, are "Esmeralda
and DJoll," by J. Van Lcrlns of Antwerp. This sub
ject, taken from Victor Hugo s "Notre Dame," is of
a much higher class than the pictures generally
offered at auction, and we hope It will be secured by
some genuine lover of art and retained in this city.
The sane may be said of the spirited "Sea Fight at
Walcheron" by Hendrick Schaefels of Antwerp.
This subject Is taken from Motley's "Dutch Repub
lic," and we commend It to the notice or the public
as a very superior picture. Another fine work Is
the Greek subject by Karl Ooms, entitled "Tho Re
turn." This artist has a high reputation lu Europe,
although he Is but little known hero, this being
the second picture by him that has been imported.
Besides those we have mentioned there are a great
number of excellent works of cabinet size that are
admirably suited for the decoration of drawing
rooms. This collection will be sold without reserve
on tho evenings of Tuesday and Wednesday of next

The approaching season of opera offers attrac
tions which should awaken in tho hearts of all
lovers of the lyric stage a warm interest. We
will again listen to tho exquisite voice of our
lavorite tenor, Signor Brignoli, who has just re
turned from a successful tour in the West.
At San Francisco Brignoli created a great
furore, and was received with every mark of
favor and unbounded enthusiasm. On the night
of his benefit tho last of the season the satis
faction of the audience was evinced by warm
expressions of appreciation. At this farewell
benefit Sig. Brignoli was the recipient of. three
costly gifts tokens of public esteem.
gJWo are promised the pleasure of hearing
Madame Gazzanlga in the operas of Lucretia
Borgia and Trovatore, lu which last named she
will eing for the first time the role of "Azucena."
The memory of her rich sympathetic voice and
wonderful acting is cherished by every lover of
music in this city. It is with a feeling of infinite
Badness that we announce as a fact that this is
positively "La Gazzaniga's" last appearance in
opera.
In the Philadelphia Academy of Music she
was first introduced to the American public.
Hero in our midst 6ho was accorded sympathy
and the just meed of approbation, and it is in
this city she has chosen to take her farewell of
the stage.
Madame Gazzaniga has been faithful In her
attachment to Philadelphia. May she receive a
warm welcome in hearty response to the com
pliment she has accorded our city in choosing
it as the recipient of her fond adieus.
Signor Paolo Giorza, the musical director,
who is ono of tho greatest living composers, is a
man of brilliant talent and refined sensibility.
His celebrated compositions have won for him
renown upon the Continent.
At the early ago of fourteen Signor Giorza
first appeared bofore the musical world. Al
though but a boy in years he composed the music
of the ballet entitled Una Faulta, which was
produced at the La Scala, Milan, where he led an
orchestra of over ninety musicians. In recogni
tion of his talent Victor Emanuel accorded him
decorations. Signor Giorza has composed sixty
ballets, together with countless fugitive pieces.
We are told that ere long he will give to tho
public an opera.
The CUT Amusement.
At TnE Walnut Mr. Lewis Morrison will
have a benefit this evening, when ho will appear
as "Plzarro" in Sheridan's drama of that name,
and as "Jonathan Wild" in the drama of Jack
tihe'pard. Between the plays Mr. W. II. Jones
will recite Lover's poem of "Shamus O'Brien."
Mr. Morrison is a studious and talented actor;
who has made many friends in this city during
the present season, and he should receive the
compliment of a crowded house on the occasion
of this his first benefit here. The play of
Vizarro has not been represented in this city
for a long time, and it ought to be an attraction
of the first magnitude independently of the
murits of t.h beneficiary.
On Monday Mr. and Mrs. Barney Williams
will anoear in Tlie Emerald, lima.

Music In this city, with the same cast, on the 2d
and 3d of May.
