THE DAILY EVENING TELUGttAPfl PHILADELPHIA, MUD AT, APRIL 15, 1870. K n W-TT o xi xx x s xvx s. . Our Own Cwrwrx"""'"- New York, A'iril 1."., 1870. Dawn-town lrlinonlr'n, t the corner of ChumOcrs Btrcct and Broadway, has been newly decorated, and painted in pink and pold. Tho best of eating is to bo enjoyad among tbt beat of upholstery, and you dlno off Viands while reposing on velvet. This change has not been made before it was neccsry. Delmonlco's, like Wallnck', bus preserved Its (rjeat name without thoe improvements which placet of small note avail themselves of without obtaining; much additional fame. Delmonlco's tip-town is a shabby but Intensely rcspecUblo affair; Delmonlco's down not qulto so shahoy, and with a little of the respectable nap worn off. The gold and pink, consequently, were needed. The European lllrrnn la Stationed at the Empire Skating Kink, at the corner of Sixty-fifth ctreet and Third avenue, but it draws the people uotwlthstaudlnir. The backless benches are arranged in tho fashion ob served at country performances, and the con e tional sawdust of tho ring is replaced with BharinRS. One of tho African lions has been advertising himself by biting in the shoulder the interesting gymnast who performs with them, and Mr. Eergh is said to be nightly among the audience for tho purpose of sectug that tho animals arc compassionately treated. Huddenly IMnnpnutred. This Is tho caso with a Mr. George O. Colt, Who vanished out of the sight and knowledge of his wife, family, and friends more than four months ago, and was only discovered a day or two since. Tho placo of his discovery Is re markable, considering the tlmo that has elapsed since he first disappeared. His body, all doubled np and past recognition, was discovered in a little out-house in the yard attached to bis own dwelling. He had been allllcted wit a complication of maladies, among which was heart disease, and it is supposed he died of that. A few days after bis disappearance his wife and family moved to a quarter of tho city distant Irom where they had been living, and although a child of her former neighbor had frequently vailed tho attention of his mother to the fact fiat tho body of a man was lying across tho 11 ior of an out-house, no notice was taken of it until a day or two ago. Then at length the body was discovered to be that of Mr. Colt. A btrango coincidence, Is it not? Chucked Out of the Window. Yesterday evoning a young lady was chucked out of tho window by a wealthy gentloman and obliged to take np her quarters on tho piazza. Her offense was heinous, and when I mention what it was you will quite agreo with mo that her puuihhmcnt was very light. Tho miserable being was a governess in tho family of tho wealthy Christian gentleman who is one of the pillars of St. James' Episcopal Church. Besides transacting her duties as governess she has like wise nured and restored to health the wifo of tho wealthy Christian gontleman. Yesterday nho veutured to ask tho wealthy Christian gen tleman for a large amount of salary that was duo her. Some altercation occurred, which was endod by the wealthy Christian gentleman giving her so violent a pnsh as to precipitate bor out of a plate - glass window. The smash was heard across tho road and tho distance of several pavements up and down the street. Tho young lady managed to get in the house again, but tho wealthy Christian gentleman again expressed his disap probation of her conduct by ejecting her in similar fashion. The shades of evening began to close around the scene. So did a crowd. Neighbors expressed their sympathies and con gratulations, and offered tho criminal shelter. This she refused, however, stationed herself on the piazza, and, for all I know, remained there until this morning, for tho wealthy Christian gentloman kept his doors closed, and had posted sentinels to prevent tho re-entrance of the dangerous character through the smashed parlor window. Tho locality whore tho window smashing and tho young lady chucking took place is on Ryerson street, between Wllloughby and Myrtle avenues. Mr. Ffditer has selected next Monday evening week as the date of his reappearauco in this city. It was at first intended that he should occupy the Academy of Musle, but the French Theatre has since been determined on. Ho is to bo supported tkere by the same company which was recently In yonr city, commencing with "Clando Mel notte," and continuing with the "Corslcan Bro tl ers." His managers want him to play "Oben relzer," but will succeed only if thoy convince him that they will produce tho play well both with regard to cast and scenery. Tho por traiture given a season or so ago by Mr. Florence is said by those who hive seen both It and Mr. Fcchter's to tie a weak imitation of the tri lingual's. The one is described as a rich oil painting, the other as a pale water-color sketch. Mr. l'cchter's managers, too, have a great trouble with him in this respect, namely, that while the public prefers him in melodrama, he is bent upon appearing dn legitimate tragedy. It is the same old story over again of a great artibt's mistaking his forte. Even Lester Wal lack believes to this day that there is only ouo man living who cuu play "Hamlet," and that man is Lester Wallack. Oyeter l).T Telcurniili A rather Interesting caso is on before .Judge McC'uun, of the Superior Court. It illustrates the diro effects of illegible hand-writing, mid it is brought by a couple of dealers in oysters, .lames A. Young ami Hubert II. Lools, against tho Western Union Telegraph Company. The 1 lalntlffs have agents at Norfolk, and lately had occasion to telegraph to them with regard to their future operations in oysters. They profees to have written thus: "Send no more oysters until further orders." The telegram which really reached the Norfolk ngents read, "Send uxmoro oysters until further orders." Thinking there must bo some mistake, the Norfolk agents ap plied to the telegraph operator to repeat tho message. He did so, and iuformed thcin that it was correct. A large cargo of oysters was then sent to Messrs. Young and Looks, greatly to their ama.eiieut,nd they claim that in conse nuenee. of the oyster season being almost Over they have lost nearly one thousand dollars. Ynln ('horUrrm. A party of very bill v young men have given what they call "glee-singing" at Steinway Hall. The entertainment was an olla-podrida of college-songs aud German part-songs, and was at tended by an audience, composed entirely of Yale graduates, who blushed at tho puerility of gio affair. That Yale College (iloe-slnglng will uot bo repeated. Am Uahv. The D'nrvvKTTKit Collection. Tho cele brated connoisseur D'lluyvetter, being about to retire from business, his entire collection of pictures will bo sold on tho evoulngs of Tuos day and Wednesday of next week by B. Scott, Jr.. ut his Art (lallcry, ( hesnut s'reet, obove .Eleventh. It was tho original intention to hold this tale later in tho week, in order to give tho public n ample opportunity to become ac quainted with the merits of the many superior works It contains, and which fully deserve ond sho'Jd receive carefi;! fTMninatlon. Owing, however, to the fact that tho Italian opera sea son w 111 open on Thursday, apd attract many of tho better class of picture-buyers, It was judged expedient to ' coin menre the sale on Tuesday. Tho pictures are now arranged for exhibition at Mr. Scott's galleries, and the catalogues will be ready to day. Mr. D'lluyvetter is too well known as an artistic expert for any special allusion to be made to him, and it is sufficient to say that his name In connection with a sale of this kind Is a guarantee of the excellence of the works of art to bo sold. The collection now on exhibi tion contains a large number of Mr. D'ilnyvct tcr's privato pictures, selected by him from tho stndlos of Europe for the gratification of his own tastes: and the opportunity, therefore, for picture buyers to select works of tho first rank is one such as is not often offered. Those who are interested in art should drop In at Mr. Scott's gallery and examlno those works, whether they Intend purchasing or not. Stvdt to Pi.hasr. It was our pleasure a few days ago to stop into tho old and well established grocery store of Messrs. Crippon & Maddock, No. 115 South Third 6treet, below Chesnut street, and we are pleased to state we found many articles lower In price than we have yet seen or heard of; for example, their canned tomatoes of fine quality were only 11 cents per can, and fresh peaches only 15 cents per can, and other canned goods, eucb as green peas, mushrooms, green gages, trullles, etc., equally low In price. Wo noticed also that they keop a very line assortment of the best brand of sngnr-curcd hams known In this market, at such prices as cannot fail to suit tho buyer. Their teas aud coffees, of the finest quality too, we noticed had been reduced somo 25 per cent, or more, and in fact all their merchandise to which our notice was called seemed to possess the samo inviting features. As this firm is well known to our readers as having the reputation of keeping tho finest quality of groceries, wo take pleasure In recommending our friends to give Messrs.
