THE OPENING.
An
Fnlhiiblastlc rtleetlns at
the Friend f
William U. Kelley.
A larce number of citizens favorable to
the renomination of lion. William D. Kolley
as Representative in Congress from the
Fourth difctrict, in this city, was held last
night in Spring Garden Hall, at the north
west corner of Thirteenth and Spring Garden
litreets. Richard Chambers presided; Wil
liam B. Webb, Joseph Chapman, Joseph G
ItittenhouBe. Thomas 11. Bigelow, William
Devitt, JoRcph Collins, and John n. Miller
acted as Vice-Presidents; and Thomas It.
Davis, W. S. Kochersperger, Robort B
Dixon, Lewis Reimer, J. II. Pugh, and James
Macnichol acted as Secretaries.
The President read the call for the meet
iner, and introduced Major A. R. Calhoun,
who said Mr. Kelley's course was as well
iknown to the nation as in the district he re
presented, and is more fully appreciated by
the nation at large than in his own district.
It was the men from Pennsylvania who most
distinguished themselves that were tho most
abused and Blundered, and unuer ins hat Air.
Kelley probably carried more brainB than any
her of our representatives in CongresB. It
v he said that he is a renegade Democrat,
kt tViA man who never changes his opinions
never corrects his errors. It is simply a mat-
rT- 7- m-
ter of educ.-Mon, and among the strongest
advocates of Republicanism to-day are the men
who were the brains, in years gone by, of
the effete Democratic party, that now drags
out so miserable an existence. One of them
was Hon. William D. Kelley.
, He then reviewed and eulogized the course
of Mr. Kelley during the late war, and main
tained that but for him the coal mines and
vast industrial interests of Pennsylvania
would lie idle. In one day 700 letters came
to the room of Mr. Kelley, marked special
and private, each one being an application
for office. If Mr. Kelley had been sent to
Congress as an office-seeker he had been a
failure- he had been a statesman for Penn
sylvania and the whole land, ne does not
wish to go to Washington for personal ag
grandizement; he has worked harder for the
protection of the industries and labor of the
country than any other Congressman. since
the times of Henry Clay.
Mr. Edwin II. Coates followed, saying that
there may be reasons in the breastr of some
men why Judge Kelley should not be Bent
back to Congress. It is said that he has been
there for many years. But so was John
Quinoy Adams for many years a representa
tive of Massachusetts. He was kept in Con
gress because he stood up for the right of pe
tition. Judge Kelley stood up not merely for
the right of petition for the abolition of.
slavery, but for the abolition of slavery
itself. It was important for those engaged
in the great Republican movement of the
day to be united in this crisis. The Republi
can party was never organized to vindicate
the rights of the slave and to give him the
ballot, but to carry out the principles laid
down in the Constitution.
Addresses were also made by Thomas W.
Trice, Esq., and Captain Mackey, eulogistio
of Mr. Kelley's Congressional career and the
positions he took upon all the leading ques
tions of the times, and especially on that of
protection. The meeting then adjourned
with cheers for Mr. Kelley.
