It originated on the second floor of a detached three-story brick building, used for the carpentering work of the establishment, fronting on Utah street and in the rear of the main structure, which is of brick, four stories in height. It burned stubbornly, and before the flames were extinguished the building in which tho fire broko out was destroyed, and a portion of the structure on Cherry street was burned through the second, third, and fourth floors. If tho tea in its wrath has swallowed np an enormous amount of pro' perty, it has mora than balanced the account by giving ns in return many inestimable treasures. One of those is the nutiitious sa mots growing npon its otherwise barren shores, and cropping out from wave-washed rocks "That stand far out in ocean like pilgrims from the land." Iloro, if disposed to air our botany, we might volunteer a technical description of the varieties of the crypt- ognmio order to which the sea lichens belong; but our proBent object being simply utilitarian and practical, we only propose to show that the more valuable of all the sea mosses the Carrageen or Irish Moei has been ren dared, by a new process of manufacture, far superior to any article of its class heretofore introduced either In Kurope or America. The now preparation of this marine vegetable (if it may be so called) was patonted only a f ow weeks ago under the name of Sea Moss Faiune, and its purity, palatability, and extraordinary nvtrimontul properties are attested by competent scientific authority, and by those still more potential evidenoos of excellence general popularity and extensive sales. The addition toonr national bill of faro of an article whioh is claimed to be pre eminently econo mic, as well as peculiarly wholesome, nourishing, and de licious, is a matter of great interest to the public, and, therefore, a proper subject of nownpaper comment. Ao cordingly, the attention of the press, in all parts of the country, has been attracted to this new pro duct, or rather this new manufacture of a natural product woll known to the sciontino world for its fatten ing, strength-sustaining qualities. Editors and news paper correxpondents in all parts of the country soem to huve investigated the moritsof the Soa Moss Farine pretty thoroughly. It has beon subjected to the expori mcntum crucis in numberless kitchens, and to the oriti eiun of numberless epicurean palates, and the result, as far as we can judge, is a universal verdict in its favor. It baB been placod, so to speak, in the front rank of our food stuples, and all that has been said of it by tho pat entce (Mr. Rand), and the Company interested in its sale, appears to be approved and confirmed by publio opinion. Its usob, as set forth by the reports of soiontitic ex perta, are many and various, la tbe lirat place, when em ployed in the preparation of puddings, custards, blano mange, creams, gruels, and soores of other dolioacios for tho family table or the sick room, it adds largely to tbe quantity of nutriment derivublo from the other mite rials; and in thesecond place rondors the disb, whatever it may be, far more digoxtiblo and agroeablo to tbo taste ban it would have been without this cheap and pure in gredicnt. Such is the testimony of a large number of the most prominent hotel keepers in New Y'ork and othor cities, and of a committee appointed by the Farmers' Club of tbe American Iustituteto pronouuee judgmenton the new edible, lbe committee of ladies, among whom was nn eminent modicul graduate and the wife of tho Secretary of the Institute, state in their report that a packet of Sea Moss Farine, costing twenty-tire cents, will produce, when combined with milk in due propor tion, full sixteen quarts of blano mange, while. a packet of corn starch, inaizona or farina, costing sixteon cents, will only produce, with the like quantity of milk, trom four to six quarts thus allowing that the new food sta ple is actually worth, as a moans of nourishment, about one hundred and fitj ;w rrnf. mar. than the heretofore popular preparations from maize and grain. It is also stated that it has none of thehoa'ing properties of ordi nary farinaceous food, and is digested and assimilated with wonderful rapidity. As far as we can judge, the conclusions at whioh the scientitio world, tbe preus, and tbe publio have arrived with regard to Rand's Sea Mesa Farine are fonndod on incontrovertible facts, and we have no hesitation in warmly recommending the article to our readers as an essential of tbe economia ouisine, and as a genuine lux ury. To dyspoptios we fool assured it will prove an in valuable blessing, it it manufactured by a company with ample means (located at Mo. 53 Park place, New Yoik), known as tbeBea MowFarine Company.
