From Our Own Correpondent.
New York, March 2t, 1370.
Mr. nrh'a Blunder.
In tho two hundred and ninth stanza of the
first canto of "Don Juan," Byron remarks:
"For fear some prudish reader should grow skittish,
I've bribed my grandmothers review the British,"
and It is notorious that when this canto was
published the proprietors of the Iiritish Quar
terly were entrapped into the enormous blonder
of coming out with a card solemnly asserting
that they had received no brlbo from Lord
Byron or "any other man." 1
Quite as ridiculous a blnnder Is that which
has. Just beon perpetrated by Mr. Borgh, the
celebrated President of the Society for the Pre--ventlon
of Cruelty to Animals, In his having
brought a libel suit against the New York S wn
day Courier for a playful but somewhat coarse
bnrlcBquo description of his personal appoarance,
habits, and mode of life. Thellbol suit has sub
jected Mr. Bergh to Infinitely more ridicule than
the libel alono If It was a libel could ever
have done, and he has found himself to be
afflicted with a greater dogree of cnticular at
tenuation than most men who hare reached his
time of life. By-the by, I hope the expression
"time of life" Is not libellous. If so, yoa may
confidently expect that, when tho Sunday
Courier business Is settled, there will be a suit
brought against The Evening Telegraph.
"Punchinello."
It is ofllcially announced that Punchinello,
the new pictorial and satirical weekly, will
positively make Us appearance to-day, and I
presume that by the time you are reading this
I shall be reading that. It will aim to be witty,
humorous, and satirical In its illustrations as
well as lu its written matter. If there Is any
failure at all it will probably be in the pictorial
department. Somehow or other our artists are
not so witty as we might wish them to be. We
have here in New York any quantity of men who
can write smartly, but comparatively very few
-who can make their senso of fun serviceable to
them as draughtsmen. Unless these sprightly
rtlsts are forthcoming, there is little chance
that Punchinello will prove to be what runch
was, but what it has not been for many a long
week. I believe Nast Is to furnish some contri
butions. The I-ate Georire WnUemnn.
If smart juveuile journalists do not get much
printed adulation during their lives, they do
directly the grave has closed over thorn. None
have better deserved tho respect and commenda
tion of the public whom they served than the
late George Wakcman, who died early on Satur
day morning at his home in llarlem. He was
st.ll young, not having completed his thirtieth
year, and had half fiuished preparations for a
course of public lectures. Without holding a
position of great prominence, ho yet filled a
very fair field, and transacted many of the more
useful duties in a graceful manner. As a maga
zitist he was less noticeable as an original writer
thin as a pleasing and playful stringer-together
of '-he thoughts of others. In some respects,
his mind was a literary junk-6hop, stored with
all sorts of odds and ends, shelved away in such
order, however, that, so to speak, he could find
then In the dark and make use of them at any
moment. In private life, too, he was a blame
less nan, filling his part with a modesty which
Is ran indeed in this Age of Cheek. Of late ho
was aregular contributor to the Galaxy, where
his art and taste as a compiler of curious saws
and aphorisms was very happily made use of.
The IaM of "Hamlet."
Mr. 3ooth appeared, for the last time for the
present as "Hamlet" on Saturday afternoon, hav
ing plajed the part between seventy and eighty
times. 3e will appear to-night as "Sir Giles
Overreach," in A 2veu Way to Fay Old Debts,
and reicat the character to-morrow and Wed
nesday evenings. On Thursday and Friday
evening, and at the Saturday matinee, he per
forms ")laude Melnotte." How the women will
rush to fee that ! I am informed that Mr. Booth
is plnk-nted as much as ever by certain ladles,
the exprealon ef whose admiration is restrained
by no suh trifle as the little fact of his being
married toa woman who rejoices in his faithful
love.
tlajor I.eland' Masher.
All the Aorld knows by this time that Mr.
George Wilfcjs, editor of the Spirit of the Times,
was recently assaulted by Major Loland, and
more or less' amaged. In an editorial which
appeared in tie Spirit of lh$ Times, when issued
last Friday, M, Wilkes darkly intimated that he
was biding hi time, and that Major Lei and
would discover hat ho would have to settlo yet,
and would not b permitted to go tinpunlshed.
Whether this liplication has anything to do
with what occurid on Saturday night can only,
of course, be a tatter of suspicion; bat at 8
o'clock that eveing, while passing through
Prince street, neartfereer, after having left the
Metropolitan HotelMajor Lcland was attacked
by an individual or i very ruman-like appear
ance, and who is geitrally believed to be a pro
fessional "masher." it any rate, he "mashed"
Major Lcland, cut hisipper Hp badly; knocked
several of his teeth on and, in the vernacular
of the street, "put a lud on him." In return,
Major Leland, who is iy no means wanting in
personal courage, area our times at the villlan,
and endeavored to "be him off." His shots
did not take effect, and.be attacker escaped,
and his whereabouts is akmknown as Collector
Bailey s.
