She bore upon her face and head cuts and bruises, as though she had been beaten to death. The testimony of John Kelly was to the effect that on Sunday morning he heard a woman crying in the street; he went out and found Mrs. Brennan lvine on tbe sidewalks. From the testimony of Margaret Walker, who ocou pied the room where deceased died, Sallie Doyle, and a Mrs. O'Neill, it appeared that deceased, when brongbt in there, had blood on her head and face, and that blood was running from her nose; all that they could learn from her was that her name was Mary Brennan, that she had just come from the surgical department of the Almshouse, where she bad been for five weeks, and that she had lived at Thirteenth and South streets; f r the greater part of the time from the bringing of deceased there until her death, she had slept or been until to talk, and when she motioned for water they bad to force her mouth open and give it to her in a spoon. The eleventh anniversary of the Orphans' Home and Asylum for the Aged and Infirm of tbe Evangelical Lutheran Churoh was celebrated yesterday, at the Asylum, Main street, neHr Cnrpenler, Germantown. A large number of Indies and gentlemen werepresout, and appeared to trike a deep interest in the proceedings. Tbe exercises were coinmsuoed with prayer, after which a bymn was sung in German by the children. Portions of Scrip ture were then read, when tbe children gave examples in geography, grammar, arithmetic, reading, catechism, and speaking. Tbe report showed tbat tue nrst cnud was received into the Home March 18, 18il), at which time a small house was rented for tbe use of the ilome. lne lamny increased rapidly until it was found necessary to enlarge tbe accommodations, and provide a perma nent abode for the children. Accordingly, a larger house, with five acres of ground for garden purposes, was purchased in October, 185;, for $7000, and $5000 was soon after paid on it. To this Home some 20 children were removed, and from that time to this, there have been continual acces sions until the number has now reached about 71 children, CO boys and 21 girls. Tbe new bouse soon proved too small, and had to be enlarged. On April 29, 18G2, the corner stone of another building was laid, designed for a school-honse and dormitory for the boys, which well fulfilled its purpose, and enabled the managers to receive all the appli cants for admission to its sheltering roof. home time alter an Interest was created in behalf of tbe orphan children of soldiers, when tbe managers offered to aid this work and applied to tbe State for as many such children as their limited space would accom modate. I he oner was responded to, and thirty-six soldiers' children were added to the family. This large addition to the numbers made it necessary for the ereotion of a larger and permanent building. The work was at once commenced, and the corner-stone of this new building was laid July 24, 1805. The building in due time was completed at a cost of $30,000. In connection with the apart ments devoted to the children there is an in firmary for men and women. In this there are at present fifteen inmates, thirteen women and two men. The exeroises were continued during the day and were highly in teresting. Baptist Sunday School Statistics.
