The Fnlton street trnycr-moollnfrs are Tory

not Imply that there arc no hypocrites at these
meetings, or that tho standing up "to bo prayed
for" is never ofllelous and egotistical, 1 am
morally certain th.it many chance attendcrs
there go away refreshed. The panting hart
finds its wator-brook there. -
But sometimes the hnrt pnnts too much for
publlo endurance, and the chairman tries to
happened only the other day. A worshlppor,
endowed to an unusual extent with the power of
praying, plumped down on his knees, and hood
lees of the flvo-mltnte signal (meant to restrict
tho long-winded), went on prjylng without
giving any evidence of letting up. The more
ho prayed the more he perspired, and the wrest
lings of his spirit were evident in the purple of
his complexion and the working of his fingers.
In rain the leader of the meeting tinkled his
boll, and finally In despair gave out the first two
lines of a popular hymn; In vain the congrega
tion started the tnno, and sang the hymn to its
conclnsion. The pleader prayed on, and . at
length dim murmurs of "put him out" (such as
you hear at a theatre when some one In the
gallory burets into a horse-laugh at the wrong
lme) began to spread over the house. Even
his did not affect tho man nrton his knees
pirltuallr speaking, he remained unput out
nd the only remaining remedy was to physi
ally eject him. With some difficulty this was
ccompllshcd, and two policemen of a serlom

Mr. FrellfiVs Diamond.
Mrs. F relish is the name ol the notoriety to
whom allusion was yesterday made as having
. brought before the Tomb; Tollce Court a charge
of theft against a Broadway jeweller. In some
respects this is one of the most remarkable casos
ever brought before a New York court. It is
rendered so by the publicity attaching to tho
name of her husband as being tho manager of
the Bowery Theatre, and by the extreme candor
which characterizes the lady's confessions. O
cheek ! thou god of the nineteenth century, how
many peccadilloes are with impunity committed
by those who put their trust in thee I If I had
on his check. It is a through ticket anywhere.
Genius may do a little; talent may do more; tact
la of immense service to any one; but check is
Indispensable. With cither of the first three
you stand tho chance of sitting down to ten-cent
cakes and coffee. With the fourth you dine
royally at Dclmonico's.
Poor Jim Jubilee.
Everything rotating to this distinguished per
son Is interesting from the fact that tho backs
of his Testa are made of black satin to the latest
charge upon which he made his appearance in
conrt ' It is theroforo interesting to learn that a
person named George W. Pierce has been trying
to blackmail : him in the sum of twenty-five
thousand dollars." The plan he took was to send
anonymous letters and to threaten Erie's life if
the sum is not forthcoming. Damocles' Jack
knlfe seems to be forever suspended over Jim
Jubilee's head. , , ,

landladies to deal with, Phlladelphlans who are
' not lawyers ought to borrow a portion of that
sharpness which is generally supposed to attach
to members of the legal profession hailing from
the City of Brotherly Love. Mr. Foster, if I
remember aright, used to be one of the healthy,
heavy old men who did the "bless-ye-be-happy'

The Arlon Chora.
On one or two occasions I have remarked that
Parepa-Rosa, although incomparably great as a
concert singer, was much more of a business
woman than an oporatic artist. Without being
exactly her own treasurer, she knows precisely
how much money comes in and how much goes
out. Her recent expedition to this city, from
Baltimore In order to sing at an entertainment
given by the Arlon Society, provoked on admlr
lnir parasrraph from almost every newspaper in
this city. In fact, it was a simple business opera
tion, and if attention to one's private business
deserves public commendation, then was Kuph
raosyno most praiseworthy. Sho simply sang for
the Arlon 8oclety, on condition that the Arlon
Chorus should sing for her during her approach-
tng opera season in this city. That choras will
keep its promise next week on the occasion of
the production of Der FreischuU.

The Blchlnas Tranpe to New Orleans.
The success of tho English Opera, since tho
opening of its present engagement in this city,
has been the subjoct of general notice. We
ascribe this, in a general way, to the Intrinsic
merit of the "KlcUlngs Troupe." In a special
sense, however, we would call it the result of
tho universal anxiety that has been aroused
since the moment of the first announcement of
tho appearance of tho Caroline Ulchlngs Opera
in onr midst. In a community so peculiarly
musical as that in which we live, It would have
been strange indeed if a reception showing,
beyond question, the popularity of the English
opera, had not been accorded to it. It is not
only from the large audiences that each night
attend the Varieties Thoatre that we draw this
moral, but also from the brilliant merit of the
troupe as a whole. Apropos of this we would
like to say that, at the matinee of yesterday,
Eichborg's comic opora of the Doctor of Alcan
tara, we specially noticed in this opera the vigor
and perfection of the chorus. No better min
gling of the soloists and tho general choristers
could be given, we take it, anywhere. If for
nothing else, tho Doctor of Alcantara merits a
second representation, which, we trust, will not
be declined by the management. A . O. Time,
