with tho ice, "from a foot to eighteen inches
thick, clear and hard as crystal, and free to all
comer," now being taken from a lake in Its im
mediate neighborhood.
A writer, who is more newspaper corres
pondent than clergyman, but who has nearly
swung around the circle of the denominations
as the latter, says In a recent letter that the
people In this region are so fitful and fickle, and
there is so little permanency In settlements, that
the wonder Is that any man who can shovel coal
or drive an express wagon is willing to run the
rltks of a pastorate.
Judge Carpenter decided at Charleston, 8.
C, on the 4th inst, that a note drawn payable
six months after the declaration of peace be
tween the United States and Confederate States

A Connecticut reporter, who recently at
tended a wedding, apparently for the first time,
writes mat wncu ue looneu upuu tue Driae "in
her tweet grace and with her gentle ways, he
felt like going into the shadowed gardens of
imagination, and gathering there the rarest
rofes of language roses half asleep in thulr
buds and half awuke as they swelled to bloom
from slumber and adorning her wedding
wreath, already full with the blessings and re-
pealed blessings and bridal offerings of loving
f rienria." ' ' ' ' !
The Belma (Ala.) Times chronicles with evi
dent satisfaction "a righteous Judirmeut, and
swift punishment" by "rrovldentlal Intorpoap
Hon," a nejjro having stumbled while attempt
luic to carry off a stolen sack of corn, and the
weight of the corn having brokcu his neck.' But
li e Timet adds that his neirro accomplices (took
the torn and carried it off. It teems strange
that they should have escaped without similar
swift punishment under such peculiar circum
tlal Iht of tho persons murdered bv Indians in
that Territory since March 4. 1H04. Tho list con
tains tho nnmo. so far as they could be ascer
tained, of Xft'i victims, and the Minrr expresses
the opinion that if it could obtain the names of
all the persons killed in the Territory since its
settlement, at least 200 more would bo added to
it; while 200 have boon wounded, more or less
rcrionsly, since tho beclnnlntr of The
Miner does not care to inquire into the robbe
ries committed by the Indians, and consoles
itself with the thought that "hundreds of the
murderous race of savacres that Infest the Terri
tory have been sent to their long homo, and will
t rouble the white men no more?'
