At the recent annual (tension of the Stile
Journal, Jnnior Order U. A. M., the following
re jreHentativpH were elected to the National
Council: Charles H. Kurtz, John D. Clous,
John D. Ooff, JaiuoH P. P. ltrown, and Ben

The cloning exercises of the night school
held at the City Institute, northwest corner
of Eighteenth and Chesnut streets, were held
last bight. A large nuiubor of persons were
present and took great interest in the cere
monies. Addresses were made by several
gentlemen.
A meeting was held last evening at the
Oitylnstitnt, Eighteenth andChesnnt streets,
to appoint delegates to the National Conven
tion, to assemble at Pittsburg on the 3d of
March, with a view to alter the Constitution
of the United States, so as to recognize God
and the Christian religion. Iter. Francis
!bnrch was called to the chair.
An adjourned meeting of the opponents
of Independence Sqnare as a Bite for the pro
posed newpublicbuildingswas held lastevening
at Merrick and Market streets. Mr. Poulterer,
hairman of the committee to visit Ilarris
trarg, stilted that he had visited that city on
Tuesday, but the bill, that alone could have
been acted upon that day, was objected to,
and laid over for a week. It will come up
on Tuesday next. He then read the bill
which forbids forever the erection of any
public buildings on Independence Square.
Addresses were made on the subject by a
nnmber of gentlemen and the meeting ad
journed. At 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon the Board
of Directors of City Trust assembled at
Girard College to take formal possession of
that institution. All the inmates and scholars
of the college were gathered in the chnpol,
and after the usual religions exercisos, led by
Frofessor Allen, the President of the board,
Mr. William Welsh, made an address. His
Honor the Mayor, and the President of
Select Council, being unavoidably absent
from the city, Professor Allen made a re
sponsive reply on behalf of the officers of the
college and hinmelf personally. Addresses
were also made by William $. Mann, Esq.,
General Louis Wagner, and George H. Stuart,
Esq., and at their close the congregation, after
singing the hymn "Rock of Ages" was dis
missed. The Girard Cadets, with the College
Brass Band, Captain Henry Oliver, command
ing, was reviewed as a regiment.
The alarm of fire last evening, about
half-past ten o'clock, was occasioned by the
burning of several frame houses adjoining
the extensive cotton and woollen mills of
James Nolan, on St. John street, below Ger
mantown road, in the Fourth district. Four
of the houses damaged were respectively oc
cupied by Joseph Foil, Mrs. Myers, William
Bartt, and Mrs. Wasthyler. The fire is sup
posed to have originated in the loft over the
engine-house of the mills, and the flames
from thence rapidly communicated to the
roofs of the adjoining frame houses on De
Witt's court. The gable ends were burnt out
of some half dozen of these buildings, and
had not the firemen been promptly on the
ground the result would have been most dis
astrous.. As it was, the flames were extin
guished in time to save both the dwellings
and the cotton mills.
! WASHINGTON.
The Ootennlal Anniversary of the Premal
Hildas, f the Declaration of Independence.
Wa8iiinton, Feb. 25. The committee appointed
to memorialize Congress on the subject or tbeir
visit, .have presented the following petition:
To the Honorable the Senate and the House of
Representatives of the United States: The Declara
tion of Independence having been written and
signed, by its patiiotto authors, in Philadelphia, and
its promulgation to the world first made In that city,
and as the centennial anniversary of that memorable
and decisive epoch In our country's history is nearly
approaching, It behooves the people of the United
States to prepare for Us celebration by such demon
strations and appropriate ceremonies as may be
come a nation so rapidly risen from straggling In
fancy to a position of power and prosperity, as at
once to command the respect of all Governments
and the admiration of th.e world.
In order, therefore, to stimulate a pilgrimage to
the Mecca ef American nationality, the home of
American Independence, on an occason so worthy
of commemoration, it has been wisely suggested
that prominent among the features for celebrating
our one hundredth anniversary there should be an
international exhibition of arts, manufactures, and
firodncts of tha soil and mines, as thereby we may
Unstrate the unparalleled advancement In science
and art, and all the various appliances of human
Ingenuity for the refinement and comfort of man In
contrast with the meagre achievements of a century
past.
For the fuinilment of this where so fitting a spot
as the cradle of onr country's liberty, or hen the
time as on the centennial anniversary of the year her
freedom had Its birth? In furtherance of an under
taking trulv National in its character and so com
mendable In spirit, the Councils of the city of Phila
delphia, the Board of Managers of the Franklin In
stitute, and the Legislature of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania nave eacn appointed committees who,
clothed with authority to act for the bodies they
represent, respectfully solicit Conirress. by its ac
tion, to recognize the fact that the city of Phtladel-
puiais, anaoi ngni snoiuu ie, ine pmue hi uoiu,
and that the year one thousand eight hundred and
suventy-six be tno time to inaugurate, an exmmuon
of the Industrv of all nations.
When such action as your wisdom may deem
proper shall have been taken, in order to place the
grand design under your fostering care and control
it la hoped the President of the United States will be
authorized, In due time, to Invite the participation
or all Kovernments. Kcapecuuuy suDmiiieu.
