,4Th) TvrHTe Tetnptntlone."
On Saturday night there was a private dread
rehearsal of The Twelve Templaiioni at the
Grand Opera Ilonso. It was lntondod to bo a
Tory brilliant affair first, because Mr. Fisk
vim at the head of it; secondly, because the
general public was denied admittance; and
third, because the theme that demanded the
attention of tho audience was a great leer-piece
to which the White t'avm and Black Crook were
presumed to be a mere bagatelle. In fact, with
the exception of the Tow scenes that were given
pon the stage, and the few dances that wore
danced, there was nothing brilliant about it.
The champagne was like vinegar utterly
unworthy of tho fame of Mr. Flak, and tho
rush of hungry and thirsty Bohemians was dis
graceful to the newspaper-press. A few
of tho scenes from the new legend
were given, and the ostensible reason for
not presenting tho entlro spoctacle was that
thcro might bo no infraction upon the sanctity
of the Sabbath. So tho board-blUs said, at any
rate; but with all this piety tho entertainment
was not over until 1 o'clock on Sunday morning.
Among the more prominent appearances were
those of Madame Ponisl, who is a trille more
"hefty ' than in her younger days; Mr. Boniface,
and Miss Nelly Pclris, a new acquisition at the
Opera House, a fine-looking woman, liked by
the populace as a slugcr, and understood to be
tho wife of Mr. Brady, proprietor of a celebrated
gymnasium of this city.

These notorious pri.c-ringlsts Intend next
Friday night engaging in n sparring-match at
tho Bowery Theatre. Tho average price of seats
has been five dollars, aud as much as ono hun
dred dollars has been offered for a private box,
Hecnan and Mace have been practicing for some
weeks past at a certain well:known gymnasium
up-town. Their appearance at tho Bowery is
preliminary to a starring engagement, during
which they will make tho tour of the country
and pick up a great deal of money. Tho starring
engagement, in Us turn, Is preliminary to Mace's
fighting Allen for the championship. On Friday
night Mace will be presented with a hand'
some silver belt, and tho Bowery will boast
of such a crowd as tho Bowery only can pro
duce. I would not give much for tho chances
of any respectable, inoffensive man who goes
into that building, on that occasion, with his
watch and chain, coming out with these articles,
The Bowery agent the other day expressly In
formed mo that he intended providing all the
newspaper people who attended with scats
near the door! This is considerate, at any rate.
With respect to the forthcoming fight between
Mace and Allen, a good deal of doubt Is ex
pressed in sporting circles a to Mr. Mace's con
dition. Allen is very spry, as yot, aud Mace, if
tho truth be told, has tho appearance of being
slightly played out.
Woninn as a Hanker.
The experiment is being tried in Wall street.
Tho firm is Woodhull, Clufllu & Co., and the
members are women. What do you think of the
idea? Stockings instead of stocks havo been
hitherto supposed to furnish more appropriate
employment for the female finger. If the move
ment be successful tho result will be most im
portant, not only for women in this city, but
probably all the world over, tsut men tninic oi
tho minor questions involved In it! Who are to
be the clerks ? Are any young men to be ad
mitted ? And is there no danger of admitting a
too fascinating moustache ? Woodhull, Clallln
& Co. are backed by a capital of half a million,
and their backer is understood to be Commodore
Vanderbllt.

response to the request of several citizens, who,
having nothing else to do, sent In an application
asking him to do so. Consequently they are as
busy at bees up at Nlblo's. My private opinion
is that Mr. Fechter is extromoly unwise to yield
to this request, always supposing that the re
quest is not a "got-up" affair. He ought to re
serve "ITamlet" until the last, for after that
there can be no great novelty to offer. There
will be an immense rush to see him, but I do not
think after he once leaves this conntry he will
receive any inducement to return. An article
that appeared in lost Thursday's Tribune, and
which spoke coarsely and slightingly of hU
"Ilcnri de Legardero," showed up Mr. Winter'
prejudices upon tho subject, and is generally
thought to have done great injustice to Mr.
Fechter, whatever his failings may be.

Edwin Adams as " Narcleae Rameau."
The German play of Narcisae the Vagrant,
In which Mr. Adams appeared last evening at
tho Walnut, although it introduces some well-
known historical characters, makes no preten
sions whatever to historical accuracy, and the
times that it represents are certainly sufficiently
remote for dramatic treatment from a romantic
standpoint. Tho main idea of tho play, that
makes the forsaken husbund of tho Pompadour
the representative man of the France of the
ante-revolutlonary period, when the lightnings
of the coming storm were just beginning to
flash along the horizon, Is one of singular origi
nality and merit. The picture of the times pre
sented is none tho less striking and Impressive
because It Is almost purely Ideal, and tho play
Is distinguished by the qualities that are most
generally lacking in modern dramatic writing
real artistic purpose and thoughtful effort to
elaborate a fine conception. Narciise the
Vagrant is a drama of the romantic school of
Victor Hugo; but It Is superior to most of the
works of that eccentric writer that keep the
stage in the directness with which the moral
purpose is 60t forth. The theme Is worked out
with care and intelligence, and the scenes are
arranged with an excellent regard for dramatic
effect. The principal fault is a certain Ger
manic heaviness that, to an average audience, is
apt to be oppressive; but in spite of this the play
Is interesting, apart from its philosophical sub
tleties, and the leading part is a fine ono for a
first-rate actor.
Mr. Edwin Adams' personation of "Narclsse
Bameau" Is undeniably a reflnod, thoughtful,
and picturesque performance. Its superficial
characteristics are such as he is able to give with
comparative ease, and he indicates at times that
be has a conception of the part more profound
than his powers of expression were equal to Re
vealing. Mr. Adams' style is marked by all the
faults that his most discriminating admirers
have so often pressed npon his
' notice, and which will ever Interfere with his
taking the highest rank as an actor. Ills elocu
tion Is artificial, giving a stlltedaoBS to his per
formances that detracts much from tholr real
, effectiveness, and he is frequently so much con
cerned about his delivery that he forgets to feel
the role he Is playing. If his "Narclsse" is not
all that It might be, It is a piece of acting that
tolls with an audience, as was shown last even
ing by the hearty applause that was awarded It,
and by two enthusiastic calls before the curtain.
Mr. Adams received an excellent support from
tho leading mombors of tho company, Mr.Walcot
making an efficient representative of the "Duke
de Cholseul," and Mrs. Walcot giving a more
than usually roflncd and pleasing performance
in the part of "Doris Qulnault." Miss Annie
Graham In also entitled to commendation for a
forcible personation of the "Marchioness do
Pompadour.
