the Curlsruhe Cabinet, and Commander-in-Chief
of tho Badou army, aro regarded by the nation

their holies is not so far off as is generally sup
posed. Au interesting brochure by M. Gustave

It really seems a pity that religious r.oal
should find expression iu such grotesque forms;
nnd that otherwise sensible people cannot give
five pounds to a good causo without putting
their entire families, dead aud alive, into th
contribution list. I" it wrong to suggest that
these long records of subscriptions are n cheap
and eney way to that notoriety which so mauy
vejik ruiuds desire ?
Those who live in constant dread of the
"Keds" acquiring supremo power in Paris will
be consoled by reading au account given by the
correspondent of one of the German papers of
the present fashions in that city, from which it
appears that the reigning color worn by fashion
able people is browu. This color goes by the
name of "universal suffrage." Not only dressua,
hats, and mantles are brown, but carriages are
painted with this fashionable color. The Tyro
lese hats, which some gentlemen have taken to,
are now ornamented with pheasants' fcathera,
parrots' wings, nnd humming-birds' heads. For
mourning bluckblrds or ravens, for half-mourning
6w allows or magpies, are worn. One enter
prising hatter has contrived to fit these adorn
ments with an apparatus for imitating the cry of
the bird selected as the appendage. A slight
movement of the forehead is suflicient to set the
little machine in motion. It is therefore unne
cessary to take off the hat on meeting a friend
you frown or elevate the brow the bird screams,
and this constitutes a greeting, certainly a
brown republic would be less trying to the nervos
than a red one, and old France with Its cap of
liberty and its thirst for olood was far more try
ing to tne nerves man modern r ranee ciaa in
russet with a bird iu its hat and a borse iu its
6tomach.
