"Prlar Artkar Will be PreiMiiii."
At the conclusion ot how many Announce
ments' I wonder have the above Ave words
figured daring the last fortnight! You ennnot
pick tip a newspaper without finding that tweak
ing lltUc sentence awaiting you at every turn.
If you read tho locals you porcclvo that the re
porter has taken a "sensation header," so to
apeak, and plunged headlong Into the regal
ravine. If you turn your attention to the edi
torials, the fact annoys you that the editor
could not resist the temptation of ringing In
some old and chorlshed jokes. Tho writers of
clothiers' advertisement and kindred topics
lavish their finost elaborations upon njeu d'eeprit
the "nub" of which Is the Introduction of tho
.royal adolescent's name. It a theatrical agent
brings in an advertisement to your paper, tho
last word ho "dings" into your ears are 'Trinco
Arthur will be present." On Tuesday evening,
for the first time, he disappointed the public
and failed to come up to time. The opera bouffe
audience expected him, but their expectations
were vain. For three mortal hours their eyes
were nailed to the box set apart for him; but he
came not It was tantalizing. It must have
been as bad as preparing to suck up a mint
Julep and to find your straw filled with flics.
But you may depend upon It, the audience was
none the smaller for tho announcement; and
the performance was at least as well as it ordi
narily is.
Itelapnlng Fever. .
Relapsing fever Is neither a fatal nor a fash
ionable disease. It attacks the poor, those who
live in squalor, and whose hopes of worldly hap
piness are permanently squelched. The doctors
say It has been In the city ever since last Octo
ber, bnt only within the last fortnight has it
prevailed to any unusual extent. It obtains
among the tenement-houses and boarding-places
known as Starvation Row. It bears some re
semblance to typhoid fever, but differs from it
In the fact that when the patient is apparently
convalescing he is seized with a severe relapse
which prostrates him for several weeks. It Is
an annoying and worrisome rather than a dan-
V geroos disease. The first case known in this
city occurred In Bollevue Hospital, and there
have been about eighty cases altogether. It is
cured not so much by medicine as cleanliness,
' ventilation, good nursing, and good food.
Though it Is fond of making the poor its victims,
it sometimes sticks its claws into the rich.
Yonnjr; Raymond,
of the Times, has been giving a lecture entitled
"Across the Continent," in which he amusingly
relates his visit to Mormondom. Ills personal
appenran' '1 manners are prepossessing, and
he has i ,onlallty than very young men
general know how to make use of. Mr. Ray
mond Is scarcely more than a youth, not yet
being twenty-two. His friends, of whom he has
and deserves to have plenty, please themselves
y finding resemblances between him and his
talented and lamented father. Ills lecture was
delivered in the Eastern Branch of the Y. M. C.
A., betoro a largo and eminently well-pleased
audience. '
Water Street MUnIou.
Suppose, by way of a change, I give you a few
statistics in regard to the work done by theWater
Street Mission during tho year just elapsed. Its
number of meetings tvus three hundred and
fourteen; total attendance, twenty-five thousand;
number of those who "Roso to bo Prayed for,"
nine hundred; signed tho temperance pledge, six
hundred and fifty; visitors to tho reudlng-room,
6lx thousand; Bibles given out, one hundred and
twenty; Testaments, eight hundred; packages of
"good" reading, six hundred and seventy; small
volumes, nearly one thousand; homes provided
for fallen women (during the post six years),
fifty. Several houses whose character is such
that women of no character live there are visited
thrice a week by a missionary lady who reads
the Bible to the inmates, and informs them that
the mission is ready to help them as soon as they
are ready to leave off sin. These good works
seem like a few grains gathered from a sandy
shore, but in the plan of regeneration, as In every
thing else, every little helps.
Amusements.
Mr. Fox Is trying to play "Aminadab Sleek"
at tho Olympic, but he docs not play it well. It
is unfair and inartistic to be continually insti
tuting a parallel between the conception of one
actor and that of another. Still, when one sees
a familiar play acted badly throughout, it is in
evitable that he should contrast in his own mind
the wretched evening he has been spending with
former happy hours, when the rolet slipped ro
fulgently through the vivifying fingers of actors
who were artists. For instance, when hist even
ing I saw Mr. Fox as "Auiluadub," Mr. ptudley
' as "Captain Murphy Maguire," Mr. J. K. Morti
mer as "Jack Torrens," Mrs. Edward Wright as
"Lady Sowerby Creamly," Miss Ida Vernon as
"Mrs. Ormsby Dolmalue," and Miss Florence
Noble as "Mrs. Torrens," it was quite pardona
ble that I should revert to those bright nights at
the old Arch Street Theatre in Philadelphia,
when th6se parts were assumed respectively by
JohnS. Clarke, Mr. Shewell, Mr. Wheatley, Miss
Mary Wells, Mrs. John Drew, and Miss Emma
Taylor. The business was beautifully dono then,
but we didn't know what happy times we were
bavin g.
Mr. Wheatley, by-the-by, looks old and out of
spirits. His wife's recent death weighs heavily
upon him, and he has discovered that a fortune
of half a million does not necessarily result in
happiness. He comes up to town to see Mr.
Fechter, between whom and himself he is fond
of drawing comparisons, not always to tUe ad
vantage of that gentleman.
Central Park.
A great many improvement, which will be
more perceptible when summer shall have como,
have been made at Central Park. Excavations
have been mode for the Pula'ontological Museum,
where the ichthyosaurus, the hadrosaurus, the
loolaps, and the equally well-known "restored"
animals will be on exhibition. The Meteorologi
cal Observatory is in operation; the Zoological
Gardens are "proceeding;" a large drinking-
fountain is being erected for horses; the
Children's Cottage Is comploted, and so is the
Labyrinth; and an Astronomical Observatory is
"talked of." An Baba.

the Senate. The ODDortunitv was taken bv the
Stetsons, and made the occasion of an elegant
dinner last night to Maior Gay, at the Astor
House, which was attended by a number of his
eld army mends. Lieutenant-Colonel Parsons,
of the Artillery, In behalf of his comrades, ore-
sented Major Gay with a full-dross uniform, in a
neat and happy little speech, and the evening
was enlivened with numerous and ant. but
thoroughly Informal after-dinner speeches.
