' About half-rwt 3 o'clock yesterday
afternoon JoBeph Morris, aged fonrteen years,
was shot in the head and breast, and badly
tajnred, by some unknown person daring a
fight between a crowd of boys, at Moyamen
sing arenne and Tanker street. He was re
moved to his home. No. 1224 Rye street.
The alarm of fire about 3 o'clock yester
day afternoon was canned by the slight burn
ing of a hair-dressing ehtablirshmeut at Second
and llace streets. The alarm abont 6 o'clock
was caused by the burning of a frame count-isg-honse
and shed belonging to the coal yard
of Hoopes & Co., Twenty-third and Arch
Streets. The alarm last night, about 10 o'clock,
was cansed by the burning of a stable at
Thirty-sixth and Bridge streets, Twenty
fourth ward.

terian Church of TUiladelphia held its seventy,
second anniversary, in Horticultural Hall.

audience standing, when the Rev. Dr. Steele
offered np a fervent prayer. The programme
for the evening, in addition to the devo
tional exercises, consisted of remarks by
Mr. George Gordon, music by different
societies, refreshments, and general im
promptu addresses.
George E. Dudley, mate of the American
brig James Davis, had a hearing before
United States Commissioner Phillips yester
day, upon the charge of assault and battery
on James Freeman, steward of the boat. The
latter testified that he witnessed the mate
cruelly beat a boy named James Miller, while
the brig lay in Vassatere, Guadaloupe; he
remonstrated with him, whereupon Dudley
struck and knocked him down, injuring him
to such an extent that he has suffered ever
since. One of hii ribs was broken. The
case was postponed nntil to-day, in order to
secure the attendance of Miller.
The Eighth Ward Contested Election
Committee met yesterday.
Recorder Givin, who, together with the
Mayor, was subpoenaed to produce the ballot
boxes of the ward, stated that they had de
clined to produce them, as all the ballots for
the different officers elected were contained
in one box, and to produce the votes for the
parties to this suit would necessitate the pro
duction of the vote for State Senator, where
there is a contest pending, over which the
committee has no jurisdiction. After argu
ment the committee adjourned.
The semi-annual commencement of the
Girls' Normal School took place last eveniner.
at the Academy of Music, in the presence of
a large audience. The exercises consisted of
sinoiDR, recitations, etc. G. Y. Fetter, Esq..
the principal of the school, after delivering a
brief and appropriate address, presented

The Ways and Means Committee yester
day decided to impose a proper duty on all
foreign printed matter.
General Canby yesterday issued an order
turning over the administration of the affairs
ox Virginia to the civil authorities.
Governor McDougall has placed his com
mission as Governor of the lied luver Terri
tory at the disposal of the Canadian Govern
ment.
Another dinner was given in honor of
Prince Arthur at the British Legation, in
Washington, last evening. To-day he leaves
lor .Mew lorn.
A bill was introduced in the State Senate
yesterday providing for the redemption of
the State loans after the manner adopted in
respect to tne national debt.
Mr. Conkling mentioned in the Senate
yesterday that the Committee on the Census
had agreed to report favorably upon the
taking the next census under the act of 1650.
The Georgia House has given the seats
declared vacant on account of the ineligibility
or tnose eieoted to nil tnem, to tnose candi
dates who received the next highest vote.
A lad has died in Chicago from the effects
of punishment administered in a school in
November lout. The inquiry held at that time
"failed to show that undue violenoe was
used." Perhaps his death also fails to estab
lish the charge.
The House yesterday, after the close of enr
report, went into Committee on the Legislative
Appropriation bill, and Mr. Voorliees made a
speech to show that the holders of the public
debt since l&tiJ, taking into consideration the
prices of gold over currency, bad paid lor the

twenties. After some remarks by Messrs. Butler
and Dawes, the latter declining further contro

duced a bill to abolish the produce brokers' tax
on farmers. The House adjourned, with the
understanding that to-day's session should be for
debate only.
