" Trif Old Master la Jtmerlrn.
American art ntnrtcnts have always rnrnplslncl of
the great disadvantages under which they laior, In
comparison with their brethren in Buroue, with
regard not merely to the culture of the publlo for
whom they letor, but the absolute want ol facilities
for critical examination or the works of the great'
msstet a, A brief course of study at aome European,
aitfcoutre affords but imperfect opportunities for
thorough acquaintance with the trenaurei that
arc collected In the public galleries of a dozen cities,
or spread upon the walla of palaces, churches, and
niounstcrles, and very many find it Impossible to
gain even thla much. It la true that the principal
worka of the great artists ate known to na by means
of engravings, bat theise, at the very beat, are but
faint ahadowa of their originals, and they are den
cleat in the very qualities that student most highly
prise. A very large number of the efforts of the
early and inferior masters, too, have never been re
produced in any manner, and the American student
la thus deprived or the meant or acqtlrlng a fair
knowledge or the growth and development or modern
art such aa ta afforded by almost any one of the great
collections of Kurope.
Independently, too, of the finished works, there re
main thousands of aketchea and studies that are in
the highest degree Interesting and valuable, and
these it would bo hopeless to aee In any shape on
this aide of the Atlantic If photography did not come
to our aid and give them to us witn a fidelity and
exactness that would be impossible by any other
method of copying. Happily these rare art treasures
re by thla meana made available to the public of
the whole world, and the American artist la put In
possession of worka that bnt a few years ago were
ao far beyond hit reach that It appeared useless
ever to sigh for them. The original! of course are
of priceless value, but for All practlcaf purposea the
copies obtainable for a few dollars are worth just aa
much, provided they are faithful In every particular.
Photography in thla matter has done for art what
the printing press has for literature. A manuscript
of "Paradise Lost" In MUton'a handwriting If any
such exists of courso has a value Independent of
any merit In the poem, which we are well satisfied to
possess In Its printed shape; and first-rate photo
graphic copies of Michael Angelo'a "Last Judg
ment," and the other great frescoes of the Sistlne
Chapel, are all that lovers of art need care for.
Indeed, these afford opportunities for close exami
nation aoM atudy that the originals do not, and we
have them given to us, with all their merits and
defects, in a shape that would have gladdened the
hearts of former generations, and that cannot fall
to have a moat beneficial effect on art culture.
Immense numbers of these "autotypes'" have been
made, and Sir. Charles F. Uaseltlne, No, 1125 C'hes
nut street, who Is the American agent for them, has
over five thousand specimens at his establishment.
A large proportion of them are ac-timilt copies In
every respect as size, tint of paper, and color of
' the chalk or wash of the sketches and studies of
Michael Angelo, Raphael, Corregglo, Albert Dnrer,
Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, and other great
painters. In these we see the germs of the master
pieces that are the admiration of the world, and
tbey enable ns to study the style and method of the
draughtsmen aa could be done In no other manner.
. These autotypes are printed by the carbon process,
and it is claimed that they are as Imperishable at the
originals. They are sold, according to size, at prices
varying from one to ten dollars, and the majority
are ao cheap that it is possible for every artist and
connoisseur to become possessed of a collection of
genuine old masters, the value of which la not to be
treasured by the small outlay required.
It la only necessary for ua to indicate the char
acter of these autotypes for any lover of art to un
derstand their Impoitance. 80 far aa the sketches
and studies In chalk, wash or Ink are concerned, they
re exact reproductions, and supply every deside
ratum.. Of course, In copies of large paintings and
fresooeB something Is necessarily lost. There Is a
reduction in size ana a iota 01 coior, dui ineir
autotypea give what no engraving can ever do the
touch of the artist and they admit or a close ex
amination, such as Is impracticable with regard to
many of the originals nnder the most favorable
auspices. . For instance, Mr. Uaseltlne has a large
number of autotypes or the "Last Judgment" of
Michael Angelo and his great frescoes on the celling
of the Sistlne Chapel. These are of varloua sizes-
some of which represent the whole design, others
give single groups and figures, and others heads,
examples of foreshortening, and other Items of in
terest to artists especially. Such an opportunity to
study the greatest works of Michael Aagelo has

or these superb' photographs selling for a few dol
' larseaoa la enough to excite the enthusiasm of any
one who loves art for Its own sake, or who desires
to see Its advancement In America.
Mr. Baseltlne Is well known at a connoisseur; of
experience and taste, and it Is credits We to his en
terprise, and a source or gratification to lovers or art
in Philadelphia, that he should have established the
agency for these works for this city. The autotypes are
handsomely mounted in a stjie suitable for framing
or the portfolio, and we re pleased to learn that
many of them nave been sold here, while large
orders have been filled for New York and other
cities. Our Academy of Fine Arts, with aa enter
prise that does It credit, was among the first to
make a selection for the use of its students, and we
only wish that It had aecured a much larger number
than It did. It Is to art students that the autotypea
are particularly valuable, and It Is Important that
such Institutions as the Academy of Fine Arts and
the School of Design should have full collections,
We therefore urge upon those who hare
an Interest in art education to extend what aid they
Can la MIS mailer, ana smnuio vur kuuvh w uu mil
that their conductors desire for the advancement of
the students. It would also be an excellent thing if
a judiciously arranged aeries of the autotypes could
be hung upon the walla of every one or the puouo
schools, where they would remain as a perpetual
means of culture. The low price at which they are
offered for sale would enable this to be done at a
comparatively small expense, while the benefits
that would be conferred cannot be estimated at any
pecuniary valuation, and it would be an Important
step in that education of the publlo taste without
which art in America will always want that encour
agement that It ought to receive.
Mr. Uasoltlue in his main galleries has a fine col
lection of paintings, about seventy In number,
which contains works of iome of the best modern
artist. These have been selected with great care,
and they are mostly pictures of a very high class,
auoh aa are seldom ottered to the public. The entire
collection wtll be sold at auction on the evenings of
Thursday and Friday next, and we Invite for them
