From Our Own Correipondrnt. '
i ' Nitw York, J.a. 13, 1870.
Mr. Kerhter.
I will assume that you are not Indifferent to
hearth about Mr. Fectator at "first mouth" from
one who u all there, lustend of at socond-hand
through tbe New York newspapers. I hardlr
think a larger audience wa ever assembled at
Nlblo's. It had been said that Mr. Fechter would
be a fashionable success, but the audience on
Monday evening partook more larjroly of Intel
lect than It aid of fashion. The short scene bo
tween "Don Salluste" and "Don Ca-sar," prelu
sive to the entrance of "Ruy Bias" for Ruy
Mat was the play of the evening wsi
paid very little attention by the audi
ence, who manifested none of the expectant
disposition to be thrilled, characteristic of
American audiences assisting at a debut, until
'Don Salliiste's" attendant, obeying a direction,
went no the stage and summoned "Ruy" on.
Then a profound hush fell upon the vast assem
blage, and it was known that In another Instant
Mr. Fechter would be facing them. There was
momentary pause a pause Just sufflclont to
give one twist more to the highly-strung nerves
of the observers and thon spontaneous inun
ders burst from every part of the house, as
'Rut Bias" advanced from the wings, and bow
lnar to the house, stood experiencing all the
emotions of a metropolitan "recep." Critical
as the moment was for nothing Is less true
than that an experienced artist experiences no
nervousness on a first appearance In a strange
cltr ho mnnlfested no symptom of confusion,
but at once addressed himself to tho business of
bis part. I can understand why he should be
called the representative actor of the romantic
school. It Is because no other actor possesses
the faculty of dashing off the expression of emo
tion with such picturesque rapidity. He is more
like a painter of rapid and brilliant sketches
than of large and laborious pictures, ills "11am'
let" will be an Impassioned and Impulsive colle
dan. rather than the philosophic Dane of tradl
tlon. There are no Intrinsic beauties in his
elocution as such. lie never declaims. . lie is a
forcible illustration of bow completely the genius
of eloquence, like any other kind of genius, may
be of set rules. "Ruy Bias" is not a- role fitted
to display the intellectual character of an
actor, but in it Mr. Fechter gives no
Indication of the capability of being intellec
tual in anything else. His acting
is melodrama's most refined and exquisite ex
pression. In reviewing another .performer's
interpretation you might say that he had thought
out his part; in reviewing Mr. Fechter s you
perceive that he has fell it. Sir. Fechter Is pic
turesque in much the same sense as a hot
blooded man is more picturesque than a cold
blooded one. His face, bis hands, his figure are
Incessantly at work, depicting the ever-changing
emotions supposed to take place in the soul of
the character he has created. As Mr. Beecher
would , say, he has a tubfull of feeling in a
bucket's capacity, and feeling porpetually '.'slops
over." As "Ruy Bias" Mr. Fechter "slops over"
all the time. As for Miss Leclercq, I am at a
loss to understand why the newspapers
should speak ot her in the eulogistic terms
they do. She is an ordinary actress, and an ex
tremely good-looking woman of thirty-five. She
has an abundance of beautiful auburn hair, and
acts Judiciously, with a thorough acquaintance
with stage business. I could mention a
dozen native Amorican actresses who would
rank above her. Finally, Ruy Bias was
put upon the stage at Nlblo's in tho most exe
crable style a style totally unworthy the repu
tation of the theatre and of Messrs. Jarrett &
Palmer.
That Deml-Seml-ObJtnnry.
I wrote last Saturday in regard to Colonel Du
Solle. I hereby amply apologize for it. If he
ever finds me out I think he'll forgive me. lie
Is not dead, but is slowly and painfully recover
ing from a malady whlih threatened to speedily
, remove him. I hope he may live as long as the
bamboo, and that the enforced rest his convales
cence will secure him will send him back to his
editor's desk with all his powers recuperated.
Ijl Coterie To-morrow Night.
"La Coterie of New York" is to give its second
annual masquerade ball to-morrow evening at
the Academy of Music, under the care of the
gentlemen connected with the offices of the
principal hotels in this city. There are to be
three bands of music, orchestra, promenade, and
military, together with tableaux vivants charac
teristically grouped, in two hundred costumes,
o as to represent the five senses. No gentleman
is tobe admitted to the floor unless in fancy cos
tume; all masks are to be lifted at the door of
the Academy before the wearers are permitted
to enter, and to be permanently removed at mid
night. ' "La Coterie" may not be so popular ai
the French balls, but it will be more "plert."
The Ber. Horace Cook.
Of course "telegrams" will have informed you
long ere this that the Rev. Horace Cook, pastor
of the Seventh Street Methodist Episcopal
Church, of this city, has accomplished the sanc
timonious seduction of one of the sweetest
lambs of his flock. The lamb was attached to a
Sunday school belonging to Mr. Cook's church,
and such was its affection for its shepherd that
everywhere that Horace went the lamb was sure
to go. It has gone with him ran away from
the parental roof and the "guilty pair" are now
probably getting religion at the fashionable
hotel of some distant city. Mr. Cook has a son
about fourteen years of age, and the girl he has
run away with is Just about three years the
senior of this boy. Think of it! Ai.iBa.ua.
