An ordinance appropriating to the
Sheriff, t-17110-76 to Coroner William Taylor;
$1700-75 to Clerk Anhton, of the (Quarter Ses
sions; 1200 to -pay jurors: and 4500 to the Su
preme Court, was ordered to be sent to Councils
with a favorable recommendation. The School
Appropriation bill was made the special order
for next Monday evening. Ordinances creating
loans for extending the water-works and en
larging the prison were postponed.

. Wright, a representative of one of the labor
organizations, made an address In relation to
the value of the union of labor to protect Itself
against the encroachments of capital. A com
mittee was then appointed to draft resolutions.
After a short absence they reported a series of
resolutions, which stated the cause of their strike,
and the grounds upon which it was based, and
the determination of the strikers to hold out
until the grievances are adjusted.

Secretary Bontwell lectured last night in
Washington for the benefit of the Grand Army
of the Republic.
The telegraphic strike in Washington has
been rendered ineffective there by the importa
tion of a nnmbcr of operators from this city.
New counterfeit fifty cent notes of the last
scries, of a very superior execution, are afloat.
The paper is inferior to that of the genuine.
Hon. John Huyler died In New York on
Sunday, from injuries 'inflicted upon him by a
drunken man some weeks since. The deceased
was a native of New York, but became a citizen
of New Jersey, from which he was sent as a
Representative to the Thirty-fifth Congress. He
was a member of the Committee on Agriculture,
and devoted much time and attention to his
duties in that connection. His assailant ana
murderer is In custody.
The following were the proceedings in Con
gress yesterday alter the clohe of our report:
In the Senate, bills were introduced by Mr.
Harlan to prohibit sales of public lands, except
to actual settlers; by Mr. Stewart, extending the
protection of the Civil Rights act to the Chi
nese; also abolishing franking, and establishing
a Government telegraph system; by Mr. Morton,
declaring that no State has power to tax passen
gers travelling through its limits: also to pre
vent the furnishing of war vessels to foreign
?owers to be nscd againBt insurgent districts; by
Ir. Williams, to provide for the redemption of
greenbacks in coin, at the rate of tl In coin for
l-20 in greenbacks. On motion of Mr. Corbett,
the Finance Committee were directed to consi
der the expediency of compelling the national
ianks to make annual returns of the gold inte
rest paid tht-m by the Government upon bonds
held to seenre their circulation, until the amount
reach tho sum required as their legal reserve,
and it may be held as a reserve
instead of legal-tenders, with a. view to resuming
specie payments. Mr. Corbett also offered a re
solution juirecting the Secretary of State to make
propositions to Great Britain for the annexation
of British Columbia. Referred to the Foreign
Committee. The bill lor the admission of Vir
ginia was considered; and, after an Executive
session, the Senate adjourned.
In the House the bill for the admission of
I Virginia was laid over by a vote of 80 to 00. No
I other business of importance was transacted.

Kochefort's newspaper, the Marseillaise,
having made a bitter and slanderous attack on
Prince" Pierro Bonaparte, that personage for
warded a message of a hostile character to the
ofllce. Thereupon two gentlemen called upon
the Prince as the seconds of Pascal Grousset, one
of the editors, to arrange for a meeting. An
altercation ensued, durrng which tho Prince
shot one of them dead, lie at once gave him
self up to the authorities. .
