UHf Affaire.
The tblrtv-flrnt annual meeting of the Phila
delphia Bible" Society was held Tctcrdiiy after
noon, at the N. V. corner of Seventh and Wal
nut utrectB. Tho annual report, which wag read,
els forth that a new feature had been Intro
duced In the employment of nine women to read
the Scriptures to the poor and sick, and to dis
tribute Bibles among the indigent. All tho pub
lic institutions had been furnished with Bibles,
as aleo the Sunday Schools, and many were
distributed among Immigrants, sailors, and boat
men. Number of Bibles distributed during the
year, 8072; Tcotamrnts, 4814. Total number of
copies distributed since the organization of the
f-odcty: of Bibles, 1SJ8,80;5; Testaments, 250,774.
I)nruig the year the receipts were $H21, exclu
sive of a donation of $15000 made by Mrs. Ann
Uertzog. All tho money remaining on hand at
the end of each year, after tho payment of ex
penses, is donated to the Pennsylvania Bible
(Society.
The bookstore at Fifth and Walnut streets
was ntered on Saturday or Sunday night, and

VTho key of tho fire-proof was found by
Ihe thieves in a box in tho desk, and by this
lacans they obtained the articles stolen.
I At a quarter past eleven o'clock last even
ing fire wos discovered in the second story of
he rear of the northwest corner of Sixth and
Wayne streets. The' first floor is occupied by
i-ihantz fe Brown, as the Falstaff Hotel. The con
sents of tho second story were destroyed, but
ijthe Are was confined to this room, although the
fiarroom below was considerably damaged by
fwatcr.
Before U. 8. Commissioner Ilenry Phillips,
Jr., yesterday, a final hearing was had in the
aha nf H. C. Burnett, chanrcd with opening
letters, -
The Commissioner announced that he should
bold the accused to bail in 10,000 for his
appearance at the next term of the United
States Court.
At the annual meeting of tho Demo
cratic Association, which was held last even
ting, Mr. John O. dames was collect to
the cnair, ana Mr. donn v. Junes appointed
Secretary. The tellers on election llnally re
ported that Mr. Lewis C. Cassidy had been
unanimously elected President, and Messrs.
CharleB Ingersoll and G. W. Arnold, Vice-Presidents.
Tho stated meeting of the Board of Guar
dians of the Poor was held yesterday afternoon,
president John M. Whitall In the chair.
The Steward rertcd the house receipts to

having collected for support cases, $588. The
Treasurer presented his annual report showing
amount of collections for support and bastardy

Mr. Collins offered a series of resolutions, re
quiring the Visitors to state the number of per
sons relieved by each separately; also, the
amount of relief granted, and number of times
relief has been granted, names of families, etc.

f. lormed Presbyterian Church was held last even
jj ing in Horticultural Hall, corner of Broad and
Walnut streets.
The Chairman of the Committee on Service
read a report showing that the soiree had been
held on the 28th of January last. The balance
in hand after paying the expenses attendant
thereto, amounted to vlmov, oi wnicn amount
$25 were given to the session for the benefit
of the poor of the church. The balance was
given to the trustees for the benefit of the
Gospel.

The thirty-sixth annnal meeting of the Asso
ciation for the Relief of Disabled Firemen was
held last night In the Fire Association building,
at the corner of Fifth and North streets, Vice
President Joseph R. Lyndall presiding.
The annual report, which was submitted,
stated that during tho year 3230 were appro-
J)riated for the relief of members or their f ami
ies, which was distributed among 96 persons,
including 14 widows and orphans. Total amount
appropriated for this purpose since the institu
tion of the associatiou, $39,209-30. Two life
members and 199 annual members were added to
the roll of the association in the past year,
making a total of life members, 444; annual
members, 1110. Total number of members, 1500.
The following were elected as the officers:
President, George W. Tryon; Vice-President,
Joseph R. Lyndall; Treasurer, William T.
Bntler; Secretary, Edward D. Yates; Assistant
Secretary, William J. Pascoe.

Gold closed yesterday at 119.
Already the New York Stanton fund reaches
$20,000.
General Terry assumed command of Georgia
C. JC." Miller, City Clerk of Springfield,
Ohio, is charged with embezzling city funds.
The Ohio Legislature met yesterday and
orgnnized. A. J. Cunningham, a reform candi
date, was elected Speaker of the House.
Yesterday the internal revenue receipts
amounted to the unusually heavy sum of
$1,475,000.
A man was recently convicted in Idaho of
selling whisky to the Nez Perce Indians, and
sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment.
There have been no drunken Indians seen in the
tribe since.
Notwithstanding the vague card of the
French Cable Company, their concession does
contain "the very objectionable feature of sub
jecting all messages to the scrutiny and control
of the French Government," as the President
put it in his message.
Secretary Boutwell's statement of the public
debt, just issued, shows that during the month of
December the amount was reduced by $4,813,731,
making a total reduction since March 1, 1809. of
$70,710,306.
Governor Asbley denies that he is working
In collusion with Democrats in Montana, and the
President is asked to withdraw General Potts'
nomination to the governorship, to give him an
opportunity of replying to the barges brought
gainst him.
Governor Hayes, in his message to the Ohio
Legislature, recommends the adoption of the fif
teenth amendment; shows a surplus in the esti
mated receipts over expenditures; states the
debt at $9,855,938; and recommends a revision
of the financial laws.
The defaulting cashier of the Merchants'
Exchange Bank, New York, turns out to be the
real culprit In the case of the Farmers' and
Drovers' Bank of Somers, Westchester county,
N. Y. Hill, tho cashier, who was convicted of
the defalcation, aud imprisoned, has been re
leased. C. E. Maglaughlln, District Attorney at Car
lisle, Pa., has been in tho city several days, on
business connected with the Schoeppe murder
trial. He has obtained depositions of quit a
number of persons who knew Miss Stinnecke
many years, and were well acquainted with her
handwriting. Tnese persons are positive in
their belief that the signature to the will pre
sented by Dr. Schoeppe is a forgery. Mr. Mag
luughlin does not desire to have the affidavits
made public while any judicial proceedings are
pending, but iutends that they snail form part
of a statement hereafter to be muds, and which,
Le says, will place beyond doubt the guilt of the
accused and the justice of his conviction.

Prim and Oloznga have been conferring
lately, and ministerial changes with a view to
the prolongation of the Provisional Government
are talked of.

boom, foretopmaat, and split sails.
Bohr Serene, from Nevassa, while lying in the stream at
Wilmington, N. C, Dec. 80, was in contact with the steam
ship Pioneer, which was heme towed from her wharf to
another part of the harbor. The schooner had bowsprit
carried away, bnt ere it fell over the side, ripped up the
railing of the Pioneer, oaaaing considerable damage. The
two vessels dragging the tug af tor them, were swept down
the current several hundred yards before their headway
conld be checked.
