REVIEW OF NEW B 0 0 K B.
Tiko-a-Lino. By Frank K. Stockton. Pub
lished by ITurd & Honghton. Philadolphi
Kent, Duflleld Asbincad.
It would be to quite misapprehend the drift of
Mr. Stockton' children' storlci, or rather for
he has written storle. of a more direct aim it
would be to imperfectly understand the x
(luieito talc8 contained lu this little book, to sup
pose them to have been written for children.
This may sound like a first-clans paradox, but t
little reflection will show that It ii really not
one. Children arc among the best things, if not
the very best things in life, but their little heads
do not hold all the fancy and poetry in the
world. There are a few things that are beyond
them. The best things, for instance, that are
said about children are so of necessity. Chil
dren may be termed objective. In a jjreat mea
sure wo make them what they are, and we fur
ther gratify ourselves by lnvosting thorn with
attributes of which they themselves do not
dream. "Tiug-a-Ling" will walk straight into
the affections of any sensitive or imaginative
child, but that is not Riving the book its fullest
or chlefest praise. The author loves children,
he knows their loyalty and sweetness, but to
amuse them is the least part of his ambition.
He flies the kite, but only as Franklin
did, to control at least to regulate, to make evi
dent, a mysterious power In nature In this case
the universal good-will, the lore of kind, the
fostering of the homely affections which are ths
groundwork of society. He writes not only for
children, but for the childlike spirit. The liltls
ones cannot fail to come very near so genial a
teacher, but the father and mother of the little
ones, together with a selected army of aunts and
uncles, will come yet nearer. We think it is
doing the six-year old no injustice to deny his
absolute jurisdiction in this matter. We would
rather take Mr. Stockton's giants and fairies as
verities than do so cruel a thing. No 1 Three
foot nothing and a half devours the story, and
is blind to our criticism; but we in our surener
heights are aware that three foot, in the nature:
of affairs, cannot know everything until He has
babies of his own. Mr. Stockton possesses a
combination of fancy, inventive power, and rare
quaint humor which, it strikes us, is certain to
gain him an abiding audience. There is not
another man or woman in America who could
have written this book, and we do not forget
either that Mr. Aid rich, Mrs. Phelps, and other
authers have written admirable stories for chil
dren. But "Ting-a-Liug" is on another and a
higher plane. The author can be compared to
no one but Hans Christian Andersen, and only
to him in motive, certainly not in either matter
r manner. Mr. K. B. Bensell's illustrations of
the text are most excellent. The artist shows
that he thoroughly appreciates his author the
result of this happy understanding, added to
Mr. Bensell's facility of expression, making a
very real success. Mr. Bcusell is becoming fast
rccognl.ed as one of the best book illustrators
we have, and his '"Tiutj-a-Ling" pictures will
add materially to his reputation. The book is
very handsomely printed and bonnd, and it Is
one of the most attractive holiday volumes that
has come under our notice.
Ciaxton, Hem sen & Haffelflngcr send us
"Old Testament Shadows of New Testament
Truths," by Lyman Abbott. Published by Ilar
per & Brothers. In this book Mi. Abbott enters
upon a comparatively new field ef Scripture in
terpretation. He gleans from the records of the
Old Testament the forcshadowiugs of Christ,
and explains their application to the actual
events of Christ's career. The subject is treated
with an earnest appreciation of its importance,
and with all that fascination of style for which
this writer is justly celebrated. The work is
very finely gotten up by the publishers, and
w ith its fine paper, clear type, elegant illustra
tions, and tasteful binding, it will be sure to be
appreciated during the holiday season.
'Bound to John Company" is a curious and
exceedingly interesting story of an attache of
the East India Company more than a hundred
years ago, at the time when England was
establishing her dominion in the East. The
Ktory Is well written, and it is full of exciting
episodes. When It was being published serially
in Barker's Weekly it attracted much attention,
and it will well repay perusal.
Of the publications of Hurd A Houghton,
we have received from Ciaxton, Kemsen &
Haffelflnger, "An American Family in Paris"
sind "Two Lives in One," by Vieux Moustache.
The first of these works Is a clever attempt to
irive a minute description of the wonders of
Paris, in the form of a story which relates the
sidventures of a family of American visitors.
It is finely illustrated with pictures of the
principal buildiug3 and objects of interest, and
it will be interesting and useful alike to those
who intend to visit Paris, or those who wish to
know what the famous French capital Is like.
"Two Lives in One" is an attractively written
Btory, designed particularly for young readers,
tmt which will be appreciated by those of ad'
Sranced years. There is a pleasant vein of
iiamor running through the story, and the moral
Is sufficiently pointed without being made un
necessarily obtrusive.
J. B. Llppincott A Co. send us "Choice
Specimens of English Literature." This is un
amplification of the well-known compilation of
Shaw, the American editor having added a num
berof selections that render the work a more
werfeet view of English literature. Published
tor Sheldon & Co.
The same publishers issue "Analysis Parsing
and Composition," by James (.ruikshank, I.i,.u.,
designed to accompany the grammars ot ur
Bullion's series.
Messrs. Lirmincott fc Co. also send us "The
Little Norton." by Mrs. Clara Barnes Martin.
This is a semi-religious story for children, in
which Ibe intention is to furnish amusement
and Instruction at the same time. ,
"The Pursuit of Holiness" is the title of a
Tolume of religious meditations by Edward Mey
rick Gouldburn, D. D. Published by D. Apple
ton & Co.. and received from D. Ashmead. "The
Thoughts on Personal Kcliglon" by this writer
Lave been received with much favor both lu
England and America, and the present sequel to
that work will be found equally wormy ot at
lention.
'Duffleld Ashmcad's Annual contains era
tsmAAnA In advertisements a cleasantlv written
Christmas story by Nellie Eyster.
From T. B. Peterson & Brothers we have
Trived "The Christmas Stories" of Charles
iiickens, containing "A Christmas Carol," "The
Ohlmes," "Cricket on the Hearth," "Battle of
l He." "The Haunted Man, and "Pictures from
Italv."
"Marcus Warland" Is the fourth volume of the
cew uniform edition ef Mrs. Caroline Lee
HenU's works now In course of publication by
Messrs. Peterson. This series of popular novels
will be completed in twelve volumes.
yrota A. Hubbard, "No. 400 Cberout street,
we bnvo received "The Home Physician," by
(icorge M. Beard, A. M., M. D. This is a com
prehensive treatise on anatomy, physiologf,
and hygiene, written in a familiar style for use
in the family. It gives a treat deal of usoful
Information about the structure and functions of
the human body, the mauagement of the sick
room, the various ailments, their symptoms and
trcutmcnts, the proper method of procedure In
the cafe of accidents and sudden emergencies,
the various medicines used, their preparation and
the proper doses, and much other important
matter. One of the most valuable
features of the work is the chapter on pregnancy
and management of infants, which contains a
large amount of practical information and sug
gestions. A full list of medicines, doses, and
prescriptions is, given which will be found use
ful in very many cases when a physician is not
at hand. The work is made complete by an
index and glossary, and it appears to be one of
the best publications of its kind thaHias yet been
issued. Dr. Beard is a physician of reputation,
and he has obtained for his book the endorse
ment of Professor L. J. Sanford, of Yale College,
and other eminent authorities. Sold only by

Arthur's Howie Magazine for January comes
