From Turnor .nrotlx-rs fc Co. wo htvo
received "From tlio Creation to Momci1' and
"From Joshua to Daniel," in words of one
nylluhle. FuliHslipd by (ioorgo A. Lonvitt. In
thcRO books -tho exact latigiiufjQ of the Bible
has been retained na far as practicable, and
they are well adapted for tho purpose of inte-
roRting children in the-narratives of the Seri y-
twes. These two volumes give a complete
Bible history from the creation to tho time of
Daniel, and, with the exception of the atro
ciously poor engravings, they are entitled to
hearty commendation.
The same house sends us Apph ton's Jour
nal for December 1, which is full of enter
. taining reading matter.
From J. B. Lippiucott & Co. we have

little work is in reply to an article that np

signed to relieve, the "Ilicksito" Friends from
the imputations of their "Orthodox" brethren
The work will be road with interest not only
by tho members of the Society of Friends, but
- by those who wiwh to understand clearly what
the differences botween tho rival factions of
that body really are.
The same house sends us several of Loe tfc
Shepard's recont publications.
- "The 4B. O. W. C.,'" by the author of
"The Dodge Club," is a very amusing book
for boys, that will certainly excite tho juve
nile imagination to tho highest pitch of emu
lation. It relates tho adventures of tho mem
bers of a secret order who gloried in the title,
represented by the mysterious initials, of "The
Brethren of the Order of the White Cross."
The haps and mishaps of these youngsters
are related in entertaining style, and tho book
is one that will find plenty of appreciative
readers.
"Sabbath Songs for Children's Worship,"
by Leonard Marshall, is an excellent selec
tion of hymns and tunes for Sabbath-schools.
From the American Sunday-School Union
vre have received "Bread from God," a hand
somely illuminated series of pictures and
verses, bound in attractive style suitable for
the holiday season; also "Mabel; or, the
Bitter Hoot," and "How Paul Became an
Artist" a couple of religious stories for
young people.

Christmas Times" a pleasantly written story
for children.
"The Guide Book of the West Chester
and Philadelphia ltailroad" gives an excellent
description of one of the most beautiful and
interesting sections of the State of Pennsyl
vania, and it will be invaluable to those who
travel on the road, whether for business or
pleasure. The book is illustrated with a
number of excellent lithographs of scenery
and points of interest, executed, we under
stand, by one of our leading artists. The
"Guide Book" is for sale at the depot of the
eoinpany and on the cars. Printed by Sher
man & Co.
The Philadelphia Photographer for De
cember conclude the sixth volume of a very
nsoful and interesting publication. Its speci
men photograph is a view of the Mount
Washington ltailway, by Kilburo Brothers, of
Littleton, N. II., and it contains a number or
valuable papers by practical writers on photo
graphic subjects. The conductors of tho
magazine announce a number of improve
ments for the new volume. Published by
Benerman & Wilson. j
Oodey's Lady's Book for January com
mences tho eightieth volume and the for
tieth year of one of the most popular publi
cations in the country. A more appropriate
frontispieoe could not be given than the fine
steel-plate portrait of the genial editor, which
will certainly be appreciated by his multitude
of lady admirers. In this picture Mr. Godcy
looks as if he was likely to continue in charge
of Tlte Lady's Book for another forty years
and more. A number of other illustrations
are given, including fashion plates and pat
terns, and the reading matter is up to the
nsual mark of excellence

' . Votes and Virtue.
A hard struttulo do tho leading ladies of tho
Woman's Suffrage Association have of it to keep
thcronclves before tho public. Uullke actresses
and public singers, they are not placarded from
one end of the city to the other, nor constautly
advertised in the newspapers. The Institutions
which they support aro not yet rcconlzod as
standard and legitimate places of amusement,
and consequently such notices as they do get
from the newspapers they have to work for.
Very hard work it la, too. Take my word for
It, ladles, tho labor would be less and tlio re
wards sooner and sweeter, if you would apply
the same amount of energy to glorifying tho fire
side that you do to dlsllj;urlng tho lecture hall.
If you would learn that casting votes is not
necessarily synonymous with advancing in vir
tue, and that you will not Krw weaker In sen
timent the less you meddle wliu tho question of
suffrage, you would bo showing a now phase of
character which tho public and the. papers
would alike respect. "Keeping before tho pub
lic!" I know how necessary that la in your eyes,
and how manfully you put your femluine
shoulders to the wheel. But tho cart sticks fast
in the rut of Woman's Rights, and Providence
don't' seem ' In a hurry to help those who aro
femininely strupgllng to help themselves. Mrs.
Croly is one of those strulcrs, and having a hus
band who holds a position of some intluonce
. among the newspapers, sho manages to hold
her own or rather his with a
tolerable grace. Mrs. Norton Is another slowly
arising Irow tho obscurities of wedded life, by
dint of, a sharp voice, Inciflvo jnapners, and the
pretty linperiolifne.s which Is not -Altogether nn
pleasant In a young and smart woman. At a
recent meeting of tho Woman's Sii IT rago Asso
ciation, she has been enunciating some opinions
which prove how rapidly she luw advanced in a
few short months. Upon Mrs. Blake's remark
ing upon the shameful condition of things dur
ing tho French devolution, when scarcely a
woman could go to a public assembly without
seeing six or eight husbands.- she remarked
that for her part she thought such a Bet of cir
cumstances much better than that under which
wo now lived, when a woman was obliged to
live with a husband she detested. Dr. lloeber,
a wonian's-rlghts man, who believes that Eve
was created some centuries before Adam, and
had the bringing up of that hen-pecked Aroglo
dyte, said that tho present system of marriage
was nothing but legalized prostitution. At this
point several ladies got up and went out In silent
Indignation. Mrs. Norton contended that when
sho used the word freo-lovc, sho merely
meant it In contradistinction to lovo which
was purchased, and that tho children of di
vorced parents were a grcat 'deal Vetter away
from thoso parents than with them, although
their natural guardian was their mother. Mrs.
Somcrby who- is one of those steady-sailing
little vessels that like to make straight for tho
port of woman's suffrage without stopping at
any of those interesting but out-of-tho-way little
havens which her sister-craft delight to weigh
anchor In Mrs. Somerby was tho only woman
present who made nny sensible remarks. These
were to the effect that tho question of suffrage
was the question before tho Association, and
perhaps it would be as well to stick to tho poiut
in hand, and not go Hying off to every point
under the sun except that question. A9 might
be expected, she was talked down.
Art NoIch.
The bad storm on Monday night prevented a
large attendance at the first reception of tho
tenth season of tho Brooklyn Art Academy,
which was to have been held at the Brooklyn
Academy of Music. A very few ladles were
present, and those were of tho number com
prising the committee of reception. Last even
ing Mr. Constant Mayer gave a private view of
his paintings at Clinton Hall, Astor place. Next
Saturday afternoon, between tho hours of 2 aud
4, the bronze statuo for tho Seventh Begimcut
Monument will be exhibited at the 6tudlo of Mr.
J. Q. A. Ward, No. 9 West Forty-ninth 6treet.
AimiNeiiicnt
It is understood that tho troupe of Russian
concert singers who have been giving entertain
ments at Steinway Hall will shortly appear In
Kussian opera at the Academy of Music. Wo
have had English, (Jerinan, Italian, French, and
American eperas It is time for a change; the
Russian is to be that change. Apropos of Eng
lish opera, Mrs. Bernard has been giving the
Huguenots, with Mr. Peakes as "Count tie 8t.
Brio," Mr. Arnold as "Count de St. Nevers," Mr.
Ilaigh as "Raoul," Mr. Drayton as "Marcel,"
Mrs. Drayton as "Margaret," Mrs. Bernard as
"Valentine," and Mrs. Bowler as "Urbain."
Mrs. Bernard was careful and cold, as she
always is. Mrs. Di ay ton was worse she had a
cold, and that is an offense which people never
pardon in a prima donna. Mr. Drayton bore
away all tho honors of tho evening, redeeming
in fact the performance from becoming liable to
the charge of beiug indifferent. Mrs. Bernard's
attempt to give Lex Huguenots was dashed with
thai audacity which bespeaks for such enter
prises a favorable hearing. Its very daring to
some extent disarmed her critics, and made
them eager to treat her with consideration.
I.c Prre IIyuclntlii-'n l.rrture.
The great lecturo came off last night, and the
Academy of Music presented 6iich a spectacle as
has been very rarely witnessed within its walls.
Tho regular price of seats was two dollars, but
hundreds were glad to give ten, and the
around the ticket iuiiro uuiy been equalled
during the furore attending tho visit of Jenny
Liud and that of Mr. Dickens. At 8 o'clock
precisely Le Perc Hyaclntho appeared upon the
stage, and was saluted by a burst of applause
almost as startling as the roar of cannon, had
several seats in tho parquet been occupied by
them Instead of by human beings, and all had
simultaneously been discharged. Nothing, how
ever, milled the serenity of the priest's phleg
matic presence. J le made one slight,
low, long, respectful obeisance, and
thereupon took his scat without making other
response. His lecturo was of course delivered
in French, and was listened to with profound
interest by hundreds who did not understand
one word of tho language. I must confess I was
more interested lu watching tho countenances
of the multitude than in that of Lo Pere. His
eloquence was faithfully mirrored there. It was
like beholding tho rellcction of an auirust
iianorama, by turns beautiful and tender, at
intervals startling and sublime. Writing thus
hastily, I can only say that it 1 had been as
ignorant of all spoken language as the majority
of the audience was of French, I should have
been in no doubt as to tho general drift of his
discourse, so lucid w ere his majestic pantomime
and the marvellous iutonatious of his voice.
