nrd Professor Keeso were selected to act as
Vice-Presidents, and Eugene Smith, Esq., as
Secretary. Addresses, in which It was main
tained that the death of MUs tstennceko was to
be attributed to natural causes, and not to poi
sons, and that there was no testimony in tho
cape tending to prove tho will of Miss Stennecko
to be a forgery, were made by Messrs. Ocorga
Northrop, Frederick Dlttman, Professor Reese,
Dr. Wray, and Francis Wells. (Jn motion, it
was resolved that a committee be created to
make arrangements for a mass meeting, to be
held on Monday night next. The following is
the committee: Messrs. Francis Wells. General
Louis Wagner, Charles E. l'ol.et, W. J. Horst
mann, Dr. (lOttlelb Kellner, David Paul Brown,
George Northrop, Dr. F. A. Genth, John E.
Packard, and Dr. Edward llartslioruc, together
with all tho oflleers of the meeting. The meet
ing then adjourned.
Last evening a meeting of property owners
on Shippen street was held in Katcr Hall, Ship
pen street, near Sixteenth, for tho purpose of
changing the name of said street. Mr. George
Gordon was called to tho chair. Mr. Joseph
McMorris was chosen Treasurer, and Mr. Samuel
McMorris Secretary. After an interchange of
Views on tho subject the meeting adjourned to
reassemble on next Thursday evening, when
action will bo taken in the matter.
On Wednesday morning, Mr. Brumel, of
Camden, visited Twelfth and Chcsnut streets,
and drew from the 8avings Fund $10,000. On
his way to the ferry,. on Market street, he was
jostled by a man who succeeded in tripping him,
and immediately afterwards two others came
forward to assist him up. When he got up he
discovered that the strangers had attempted to
get tho package, and while failing in this, did
uccecd in getting about f2G.ri, and then disap
peared. Last evening, in tho presence of members of
Belcct Council, tho experiment of lighting tho
gas-lamps by electricity was made, the lamps In
Independence Square "being used for the pur
pose. The battery was stationed in the Central
(Station, and the lamps were lighted and extin
guished successfully several times, wires leading
to each burner.
Yesterday afternoon, about 5 o'clock, Abra
ham Freedman, sixty-iilno years of aire, was run
over at Fourth and Girard avenue, by a passen
ger car on Fourth street. Mr. f ocVimn re
ceived serious injuries, uud was removed to hi
home, No. 331 Beaver street. The driver of tho
car (No. 31) was placed under arrest.

Rowland, a young gentleman largely interested
in the iron manufacturing business, to Miss
Norma Koons, the handsome and accomplished

enced merchant as Appraiser at this port.
The internal revenue receipts yesterday
were $480,1)88. Tho Custom House receipts, for
last week, were $2,28,35U.
Pere llyacinthe addressed a crowded meet
ing at the New York Academy of Music last
night, advocating tho cause of the French Be
nevolent Society.
The bank at Gallatin, Mo., was robbed on
Wednesday of, it is said, sixty thousand dollars.
Mr. Streets, a banker, and another man, were
killed by the robbers.
Ex-Secretary Stanton has entirely recovered
from his recent ill health Incurred in the
War Department, and now devotes his entire
time to the practice of the law in Washington.
A bill securing Immunity to soldiers of the
war from indictment for acta committed while
in service, and dismissing all pending prosecu
tions, passed on its first reading in the Tennes
see flenate yesterday.
President Grant's message was received in
Havana with very diverse expressions of feeling,
of course. The Spaniards rejoice, and look
upon it as a harbinger of peace and prosperity,
while sympathizers with the insurgents are pro
portionally cast down.
The Hot
louse of Representatives have refused
to adiourn over until Monday next, they wishing
to. employ the time in passing a new census bill.
The following were the proceedings in Con
gress yesterday after the close of our report:
In the Senate Mr. Carpenter introduced a bill
giving the Chief Justico of the Supreme Court a
salary of $1:2,000, and the associate justices
$10,000 each. Mr. Trumbull, from the Judiciary
Committee, reported a substitute for Mr. Sum-
ini'a 1.511 nt-inlitliinfi. tlin nmialliitA intinn nf
the courts of the ifnitcd States in cases affecting
the constitutionality of the reconstruction acts.
Mr. Drake (Mo.) introduced a bill establishing a
uniform time for holding Presidential and Con
gressional elections. Mr. Stockton (N. J.-) in
troduced a bill to exempt from tax all bequests
of nroncrtv in trust exclusively for charitable
purposes. , The bill to encourage the production
of cotton was referred. Adjourned until Monday.
In the House Mr. Lawrence, of Ohio, intro
duced bills to prevent election frauds and to tlx
the time for holding Congressional elections.
Mr. Davis, of N. Y., introduced a bill to tax
fictitious and gambling sales of gold. Ad

Several cities in Franco were illuminated on
Wednesday night in honor of the opening of tho
(Ecumenical Council. At Marseilles a disturb
ance took place, during which the transpa
rencies and decorations were destroyed.

A rccolution was introduced by Mr. Duffy, In
ftrnctirg the Chief Comm issioner of Highways to
shovel away the slushy remains of tho so-called
concrete pavement, in Vine street between Second
and Front. It was unanimously agreed to.
A resolution by Mr. Kamerly, asking the Mayor
to return to Councils a supplementary ordinance
regulating passenger railways, prohibiting the lay
ing of any more tracks, unless tho companies pave
the sides of tho tracks with cubes of granlto, was
agreed to.
A resolution notifying tho ofljeers of the Schuyl
kill Ksilrnad Company to repair their track was
efl ered by Mr. Hodgdon. It was agreed to.
The action of Common Council, erasing an item
nf jt MOO to build a sehoolhouse at Seventeenth and
Pine Mrect, was by Select Council concurrod In.
A resolution to restore Kalston street, between
Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth, to its place upon
the plan of the city was adopted.
Mr. iJones presented an expenditure of 8741 55, In
curred in the Interment of the lato Admiral Stew
art. It was parsed.
Mr. Smith, of the Twenty-socond ward, Intro
duced an ordinance to prohibit unauthorized peo
pie from pressing, on the occasion of lire, around a
burning building.
This Ted to a debate, In the course of which Mr
Smith forcibly pointed out the superior advantage
of a paid lire department.
Tho bill, on motion of Mr. Hopkins, went ove
until Thursday next.
A resolution by Mr. Franciscan, instructing th t
Committee on Kallroads to investigate the wisdom
of the city uniting with the Heading Kailroad in
the erection of a bridge over HichmoiiU street, wat
adopted.
The ordinance making an appropriation ot $150,
000 to tho inspectors of tho county prison, for an
extension, was relurred. It was offered by Mr. Mo
llvain. Common Council ordinance, supplementary to
the one rclativo to the pavement of streets, was
taken up. Jt was laid over until next meeting.
An ordinance appropriating 1500 to improve the
office of tho Mayor, was referred to the Committee
on Police.
The ordinance fixing tho tax rato for 1870 was
railed up by Mr. King. It was not concurrod in.
It went back to Common Council.
This was the extent of the original business of
the Chamber. After concurring in sundry high
way matters from the other Chamber, they ad
journed. Common liranch. This Chamber met at 3 o'clock
president Wagner in the chair.
A communication was received from Chief En
gineer Downey, suspending from service the Har
mony Engine and Fame Hose companies, for riot
ing on Vine street, west of Fifteenth, on Sunday
morning, November 21, and the Northern Liberty
and .Ringgold Hose companies for rioting on the
same morning, at Thirteenth and Callowhill
streets. Referred.
The following petitions and resolutions were pre
sented: A resolution by Mr. Dillon, relative to leasing
wharves and landings, and directing the Commis
sioner of City Property to refuse to lease for less
thon the rent received last year.
Mr. 11. Huhn moved to refer to the Committee of
Port Wardens, with instructions to act at once.
Agreed to.
Mr. Hall presented an ordinance in reference to
arms and accoutrements for the militia. Keferred.
Mr. Hice presented an ordinance to repeal an or
dinance to build a sewer on Twenty-tlfth street,
between Manning and Locust streets. Keferred to
Committee on Surveys.
Also, a resolution instructing the Chief Commis
sioner of Highways to cease with the building of a
sewer on Twenty-lifth street, between Manning
and Locust. Agreed to.
Mr. Evans presented a resolution instructing the
trustees of the gas works to light the city gas lights
every night, irrespective of moonlight. Keferred
to joint Committee of Police and Gas.
Also, one instructing the Chief Commissioner of
Highways to direct the Hestonville Kailroad Com
pany to repair their track, in accordance with the
ordinance of Councils. Agreed to.
Mr. Kay oflered a resolution from the Committee
of Highways to draw a warrant, not to exceed 100,
to pay the costs of the suit against the contractors
for the construction of a culvert at Kessler and
Coates streets. Agreed to.
A number of petitions were presented and re
ferred to appropriate committees.
Air. union presented a protest against tne action
of the president in refusing to adjourn the Cham
ber last week at the hour of seven o'clock. The
protest was signed by Mr. Dillon and other Demo
cratic members, 'rue protest was encereu on tne
minutes.
On motion of Mr. Huhn, the chair was allowed
to enter a rejoinder.
The bill for the sale or the almshouse tarm to tue
University was taken up. The bill provides that

tract, which was amended by striking out lfi,000
and inserting .8000, and striking out both of tho
provisos.
