AS Arcadia coanrrarrr in transtlvama.
A correspondent of the London Timet
writes from Klansenburg, in Transylvania:
'If you look at the map, Szek in not twenty
miles from the capital, but if you want to go
there you must reckon half a day in summer,
w hen the direct road is passable, and in win
ter or spring, when you have to make a groat
round, you may deem yoursolf lucky if you
got there without nccidont towards evening.
Vhere roads in gonoral are so good as they
are in Transylvania, this seems surprising,
Jjut it finds its explanation in the natural fea
tures of the district. Tho interior of Tran
sylvania forms one great basin, evidontly
once the bed of tho sea. In the very centre
of the country, betwoen tho courso of tho
rivers Maros and Szamos, thoro rises an un
dulating plateau of lato tertiary sandstone
And hhale, soft and friable. To judge from
single old trees and small patches of forest
still remaining scattered, tho greatest part of
this district was wooded, but now it is a suc
cession of naked downs, harboring small lakes
in every depression.
"The whole district, known under the name
of the 'Pasture,' is considered tho most pro
ductive of Transylvania. It was the great
grazing district of the country before 14,
when most of tho large herds of tine cattle
and horses were dispersed. Every proprietor
in the surrounding districts considorod it al
most ns a necessary portion of his fanning to
have some land in the district, for it was
above all through this pBrt that ho mado his
farming pay. Since the great herds of cattle
have been dispersed, much of the land has
been broken up. It strikes you that it has
been done systematically, for while tho slopes
facing south have been left intact, tho slopes
facing north have been ploughod up and bear
luxuriant crops of whoat, rico. and Indian
corn. This is owing to a peculiarity which
you have no troublo in discovering, for whilo
on the northern slopes you sec fat black soil,
on the southern slopes, through the scanty
grass, you see yellow sand mixed with mail.
As in the large alluvial plains of Hungary,
the material for roads 4s wanting on the 'pas
ture,' the stone which is used decomposing so
soon that it is dust almost before it is laid on
the road. 'With the exception, therefore, of
the parts of the road lying close to tho river,
where gravel may bo got, they can, even with
the great labor bestowed upon them, scarcely
bo kept up, and have to be rclaid almost
every spring.
'Although it boasts of a chnrter by King
Matthias (Jorvinus of tho fifteenth century,
which insures to it all those rights and privi
leges which had been granted to I3uda, the
capital of Hungary, tho noble town of Szek,
as it is called in diplomatic language, is littlo
different in appearance from a village. You
see the same low, one-storied houses, with
gable-ends turned towards tho street, and
separated from each other by the courtyard,
merging into the garden behind. A wooden
Terandah runs along tho side of the building
turned towards the courtyard, and under tho
thatched roofs you see the heads of yollow
Indian corn and tobacco leaves strong up in
a row, forming a sort of festoon.
"To judge by the similarity of the houses'
-you seem to have realized in your journey
the land of equality,' nor are you, indeed, fur
off here seeing the dream of tho enthusiasts
realized, for if thore is not much wealth thoro
is no great poverty either in Szeli. proletari
ans or beggars nro unknown.
"Where no one is in absolute want, and all
are more or less on the same level, t'ao great
est incitement to orime is gone; and so it is
in this Transylvaniau Arcadia. Excoj.t now
and then a Tow on a Sunday evening, there is
but little forjustice and police to do, and
even these rows can only be of raro occur
rence when in a population of five thousand
souls only half a dozen are known as drunk
ards. Theft is unheard of; not a house has
a lock: agricultural implements aro kopt iu
the fields; household property in the open
court-yards, where not even watch-dogs are
kept. There is, indeed, a prison remaining,
but it has been used for years as a lumber
room. "In tho midst of all the political and reli
gious ogitalions through which Transylvania
has gono in olden as well as in more recent
times, tho place has not been disturbed.
There Hungarian and liouman have been and
are living in tho best harmony, tho best proof
of which is that the Mayor is a ltouman,
although by far tho greater number of tho in
habitants are Hungarian. As with politics bo
it is with religion. Tho place might pass as a
model of tolerance, for thoro I'rotestants.
lloman Catholics, Greek Catholics, and ortho
dox Greek are living in the best possible un
derstandinc with each other, aud what is,
perhaps, even more, thoir clergy are on tho
best terms with eacn other.
"Yet from all this, or from the isolated,
secluded position of tho place, you must not
imagine that the people aro sunk in apatny,
. and do not endeavor to hotter themselves,
They aro not content with tilling thoir native
soil, but have their commerce in cattle and
wood. They go away with their carts and
oxen or horses to fetch tho wood, which they
bring down and sell in the more prosperous
towns.
"When one sees this simplicity and primi-
tivoness one almost begins to doubt whether
the railway which is projected in tho valley of
the Szamos. a few miles oft", will be a boon or
.not, for it will necessarily modify all this, aud
gradually efface tho originality which is so
interesting. Hut this wall bo the fate or many
of these small communities in Transylvania,
of which the town of Szek is one, aud, per
taps, tho most curious type."
Forclcn Musical und Ornmatlr Ileum.
Franlein Mchlig, tho piantsto, is about to
start for America, whero alio is engaged for a
coneert-touriwc.
Iferr Carl Keinecke has completed a
work which is intended to bo to Schiller's
Wnhdm Tell .what Hcethoven's music is to
Ooethe's Etimont.
Among the festivals to take pluco at the
opening of the Suez Canal is tho performance
of A cantata by l'rince Poniatowski. The
text is bv Sicjnor Itugelli, the Neapolitan.
ltossini's Mttne ythiuiellc is to be heard
for the first time in Vienna, on tho duy of the
commemoration of the dead. It will bo given
in the now opera house of the Kuiserstadt.
M. Costo, the composer or the opera
lonlf'e "Les Horreura do la. Guerre," is now
engaged on a similar piece of buffoonery by
M. Armand Gouziou, cntitlod "Richard do
f-ioirlinrn frotha."

A storv is current in ram to the effect
that M. Auber intends to write a drauiatio
HfTl 111 liich all tho female celebrities of
tli. time that is to say, Mesdamcs I'atti
Nilsson. Marie Huns, Marie Cubcl, Cavvaiho
Bloch and Marimon are to take part. M.
Auber is far too much of a man of a world,
we imagine, to carry out any such- wild idoa.
He might "call spirits from the vasty deep,"
but would they answer when he did call?
La Mai rone d'Ephene, of M. Vcrcousin,
has been played at the Gymnaso, Taris. The
strange story, so libellous of the fair sex,
which Petronius has preserved and La l'on
taino transmitted, is partly followed, partly
burlesqued, on amusing, and, as might be
expected, not over-moral piece being tho re
sult. "Cratinns'' has a young wife, on whoso
fidelity, as she has sworn to follow him to the
tomb, he depends. His friends, loss fortu
nate than he in marriage, laugh at his confi
dence, and persuade him to try a dnngerous
experiment. Ho pretends to be dead, accord
ingly, and is mourned by his wife, who duly
weeps over his tomb previous to joining him
in it. Hut during her stay sho receives the
consolations of "Cleon," her cousin, a young
gallant. So acceptable aro his minM rat ions,
that "Cratinns" sees fit to awako and disturb
the proceedings. His mouth is soon stopped,
however, since his wife, who with the com
mencement of an intrigue has found the
qualities necessary to conduct it, tolls him sho
knew of tho trick ho had played, and had mot
it with counter-tricks.
A difllcnlly has arisen between tlie corpora
tion of Washington and the Baltimore and Ohio

raise its track to the level of an improved

ble delay to the trains. Lgal proceedings will
be taken by the company.
