John Sweeney, who was arrested on Wednes
day upon the charge of bcinu; a jirofessioual
thief, and against whom there are several
charges of roMiery pending, m tde his eseujie
from the Central Police Station yesterday morn
ing. It nccms that the door of the cell was
opened for him, but int-tead of his !j,oin'j; in he
walked out of the (station. The strange iart of
tlio affair Is, that he left the place unnoticed, by
the turnkey. Mayor Fox, when informed of the
Cfscapc of Sweeney, suspended the turnkey,
and ordered an Investigation to be made into
the matter.
The semi-annual examimtion for tcarhcrs
in the Public Schools commem-cd yesterday
afternoon in the Zano Street School. The ex
aminations are held under the authority of the
Board of Controllers of the Public Schools, and
in, accordance with an act of the Legislature of
tho State.- There were l.V) young ladies prescut,
and l!i males. Tho questions wure prepared by
tho several Professors of the Central High
Sehool, Professor Hopper acting as .Secretary of
tho Board of Examiucrs. The subjects examined
yesterday were arithmetic, grumiv.ar, etymology,
"defining, and reading. The examination will be
continued to-day. The report of the result of
thcec examinations will be made to tho Board of
Control by Lewis Elkin, Esq., Chairman of the
Committee on (jualificatiotis of Teachers.

go from Washington to Louisville, to attend the
coming meeting of the Army of Tennessee.
A petition gotten up by the Cuban Junta,
praying Congress to accord Cuba belligerent
rights, is being very numerously signed in New

A bill removing the disabilities of Judge
Vracr, impeached by the last Republican Legis
lature, has passed the Tennessee House of Re
presentatives. A general order eulogistic of tho late Gene
ral Wool, and giving directions for military
honors at his funeral, has been issued by the
Commander-in-Chief.
A rumor that Pero Hyacinthc would Issue
an address setting forth his position towards the
Catholic Church, has been contradicted by tho
reverend father.
Senators Cattell and Cameron, Secretary
Robeson and Attorney- luneru.1 Hoar and 1 Ions.
Charles O'Neill, Henry Wilson and J. F. Wilson,
arrived in Washington yesterday.
The companies that bought tho Government
railroads in Tennessee while Johnson was Presi
dent have offered in payment bonds of that State
indorsed by the Government.
A policeman has been censured by a New
York coroner's jury for neglecting to render
assistance at the Liberty street fire, in which a
whole family was burned to death. But for his
neglect, some of tlio victims might have been
, saved.
From tho report of the proceedings of tho
Presbyterian General Assemblies at Pittsburg,
yesterday, it will bo seen that tho question of
reunion between tho OKI and tho New Schools is
virtually settled, and the plan upon which it is
to be carried out adopted.

The barque Cuba, from New York, has beeu
wrecked oil Holyhead. All her crew but live
were lost.
A disastrous hurricane has been experienced
on tho Mediterranean. Among the vessels lost
was an American ' earner.
Tho British Government has directed that
the remains of Mr. Pcabody be conveyed to this
country on board a vessel of war.
Dr. Temple, despite all tho opposition which
his nomination met with, has been eleetod to
the Bishopric of Fxctcr by the Chapter of that
diocese.
Tho Pope does not wish to have the question
of his infallibility diseussed.by tho Oecumenical
Council, unices tho support of an overwhelming
majority is probable.

Mr. Hall presented a resolution to the Hoard of
llc.illii to have the following streets ch lined: Wal
nut street, from Sixth to Thirteenth; Thirteonth
street, from Walnut to Chestnut; Chestnut street,
from Thirteenth to Broad; Broad btreet, from
Chislnut lo Spruce; Spruce street, from Broad to
Tenth, and Tenth street from Spruce to Shippen.
Mr. lletzell moved to amend by adding all the
streets in the Sixteenth ward.
Tho amendment was agreed to, and the resolution
passed.
Also, one directing the Schuylkill River Passen
ger Railway Company to have their tracks re
paired. A gi cod to.
Tho bill which was pending at the adjournment
of Councils, last week, for the extension of the
terms of olliee of tho beads of the municipal de
parts, was taken up. On tho motion to indeiinitely
postpone the yeas and nays were called, and re
sulted in yens iii, nays 14.
Mr. llanna presoiited an ordinance supplemen
tary to an ordinance relative to paving tho streets
of the city, passed .lune 10, lSUO. Agreed to.
Mr. Blackburn presented a resolution granting
the ward constables tho uso of the station-houses
and city vans. Referred to the Committee ou Law.
A resolution was presented by Mr. Rice appoint
ing a joint committee of both Chambers for tlio
purpose of erecting a bronze statue of Rear Ad
miral Stewart, the cost not to exceed l0,wo.

Mr. Shoemaker presented a resolution of instruc
tion to the Conmii.-.iioneis of Girard Fstato, re
questing them to report tho necessary measures to
secure the binding out of a number of pupils of
Girard College who have remained over their time,
thus preventing others fiom gaining admittance.

Messrs. Rice, Allen and Fagen wevo appointod a
committee on the Admiral Stew art statue.
Mr. Shoemaker called up tho ordinance making
an appropriation of KJU3 Xi to pay for clerk hiro,
&e., in tho olliee of tho City Treasurer. Agreed to.
Mr. Hall presented a resolution to appoint a joint
committee of Councils to confer with tho United
States authorities as to the manner of taking tho
census in 170. .Agreed to.

one directing the Chief Commissioner of High
ways to causo the persons who laid tho concrete
pavement on Vine street, east of Third street, to
remove the same. Referred to Committee on High
ways. Also, one relative to opening Sixty-fourth and
other streets In tho Twenty-fourth ward. Referred
to Committee on Highways.
Also, ono for the laying of water pipe on Dela
ware avenue, from South street to Davis' landing.

Mr. Ray, of tho Highway Committee, presented
a resolution to open Ashburton street, from Twenty-fifth
to Twenty-sixth stroet; to grade Wellington
street; tramway Evans Ktreot, and to lay plank
footways on Darby road. Agreed to.
Mr. Ray presented a resolution to inquire Into
the cost of building a new bridgo over the Schuyl
kill river at Manayunk.te replace the one destroyed
by the freshet. Agreed to.
Mr. Hall presented a resolution requesting the
Chief Commissioner of Highways to inform Coun
cils by what authority the Twelfth and Sixteenth
Street Passenger Railway Company arc tearing up
those streets. Agreed to.
