Bomcthing which you may possibly find to bo of
value, lie directed my attention to a scries of
articles which had recently appeared in a Frcncu
paper on tho subject of tho Emperor's health,
and which ho said had created considerable sen
sation. Tbcy were written (to his knowledge)
by a man who had once been physician to tho
Emperor, a niau of great ability but dissolute
habits, who had lost his standing in society and
his employment by tho Emperor, but who,
nevertheless, knew the Litter's constitution
well.
This man," said Segnard, "has violatod all
professional obligations in these articles, and
has disclosed the secret that tho Einperor is suf
fering under an incurable disease, which must
boon put an end to him."
"What do you call soon?" I asked.
"Well, certainly within six months," was the
reply.
"And what is his disease ?" I inquired.
"Fungus of the bladder," ho answered.
Thi is a secret, worth knowing, for tho stock
markets of nil the world will be attected by the
eicatli of the Emperor of France. Segnard added
Jit "doubUesft tie Emperor h4 been wAt

a week with such a secret on his mind, and an
empire rocking on his hack, lie may, there

these articles have not nl'fcet! tho Bourse, but

American Ingenuity In ItiiNiln.
We learn that General 11. Berdan (whose sharp
shooters f alued for themselves a wide reputation la
the late war) Is now in St. Petersburg, Russia, en
gaged In building an immense armory for the
manufacture of breech-loading riiles, which has
been adopted by that Government as the national
arm. While that establishment is in progress, Colt's
Armory, at Hartford, Connecticut, Is almost wholly
eruplojed in making the Berdan ritle. This remark
able success of an American, in competition with all
the mechanical skill of Europe, Is worthy of not,
and may fitly excite national pride.

Not many weeks ago a flatboat was floating down
the broad bosom of the Father of Waters. It was
night, and all on board save the pilot ware wrapped

But dually a faint strain of music reached the
watchful pilot's ear; it grew louder, and a cabin hove

The boat glided on, the flgurea disappeared, and the
sounds 01 music uud mirth died out. Meanwhile
the sturs ellmlied higher and higher in the sky, and
another festive cabin succeeded, and then another,
and so on throughout the livelong night. "Wall,"
exclaimed the pilot, "this Is tho queerest country I
ever did see, where at every house thev have a fiddle
and a dance !" But when the day dawned, and the
pilot was enabled to recognize landmarks, ho found
that all night his boat had been noatiug in a great
circling eddy, uml that he had repeatedly passed the
same house where the people were having a "high
old time."
