The English woman'1 Domoic Manmlif
has jupt Introduced into its columns ft depart
ment culled "The Kxchango," whereby lis sub
scribers inny advertise such of their superfluous
articles as they may wish to exchange lor some
body else's eupvrlluiticH. The London fashion
newspaper, called Tlie (Jhpth, Iihs long possessed,
such a feature, and, us we believe, no American
newt-piipcr has adopted the Idea, our readers
will probably be entertained bv a few examples
of how it is (lone. Jn a recent number of Tha
Quern we find advertised, in "The Exchange"
department, among numerous other things, the
following:
"I have a lovely C'cphalinc, in Shetland wool;
alo pretty mourning-cup, in same wool. Want
'oilers, or wood for fretwork and carving, illu
minated monograms, foreign stamps, etc.
Ttrlia."
In fact, "Tcrtia" will take anything. She is
tired of her ' lovely Cephalinc" and her mourning-cap,
and is ready for any new toy. Uul we
find others like her.
"1 have two gilt chignon bands, iiite new,
cost f.d. each, ornaincntcd with handsome
sprays and pendants at the side. I wish to ex
change them for a jet necklet, bracelet, and
brooch: or am open to good oilers. fYif'wi."
"1 have a small opal ring, which I should bo
glad to exchange for a locket or cross that could
lie worn in mourning (the latter not to he jet),
or for one of the new-fashioned round tea
tables. J.ih."
"I am wanting a pair of tuniuoise ear-rings,
and will give in exchange a pair of real gold
ones and a gift band for chignon. Mho'
Canon' 8 Sixh r."
''1 have a verv handsome pair of malachite
ear-rings, solid balls. 1 wish gold sleeve-links
in exchange. Spider.''
"1 want a clasp for a coral bracelet a small
round coral set in gold. Many things to oJTer iu
exchange. J'rro O'ohicz."
'liracclct, line gold band, with locket for
photograph in centre (very handsome). Seal
skin (real) jacket, looso shape, or good oilers.
Many other things to otter lor a very good
jacket, in jewelry or lace Pet (Killnri)."
''1 have an Abyssinian gold pendant (docs not
open) and thick neck-chain to match. I want
in exchange a small white muff, orpieceof grebe
trimming. I have a gold brooch and other
jewelry to exchange for grebe trimming for
jacket, paste buckles, rococo jewelry, or old
lace. Lijdehije."
"I have a pair of gold earrings; -Don't be
cross," represented by a bee ou a cross, with
'Don't in blue-enamel letters. Also a pair of
coral shoes as earrings. Wanted, a thick, plain
ring, with stones. Offers this week unsatisfac
toryAddress "C. ii. 15.,' care of Mr. Aluers,
Stationer, Ealing."
Hut the advertisements do not all refer to
worn-out ornaments, some offering books, some
music, and some even pet birds and other ani
mals. Oca offers "Indian preserves, guava
jclly, mangoes, citron." for a "lady's silk um
brella." Another would like to get rid of a
"raised crotchet antimacassar," and would take
a "double-scent bottle" in exchange, but Isopen,
however, to other offers. Another has "two
and a quarter yards of embroidery, thrcs and a
half inches wide, and wants four ounces of
Shetland wool." Another is eager lor a sealskin
jacket, and will surrender a gold bracelet for it.
And so on. We have cited enough to show the
notable economy of English houschodls, and to
j rove mat rauKecs nave a lesson or two to learn
in rendering useless things valuable AvnMon's
Journal.
