A copy of a very import. int despatch from Earl Granville to Governor Musgrave, regarding the confederation of Britioh Columbia with Canada, has just beeu communicated to Sir John Young. The Colonial Secretary says that New Rupert's Land and the Northwest Territory are to be united to Canada. Her Majesty's Gov ernment Is of opinion that Hritisii Columbia should also be united with thu Dominion. Regarding the advantages to be derived from such union, Karl GrauvlUe say: "Her Majesty's Government anticipates that the lutercsts of the provinces of British North America will be more advanced, und that it will belter enable tho wealth, credit, and intelligence of the whole to be brought i to bear on every art, thau by en couraging each in tho contracted policy of tak ing care of itself, possibly at the expense of its neighbor. Most especially Is this true iu the case of internal transit. "It is evident that the cstablisinent of a British line of communication between tho Atlantic and l'aciiie Oceans is more feasible by the operations of a single Government, responsible for Its pro gress to both shores of the continent, thau by a bargain negotiated betwecu two separate and, perhaps, iu some respects, rival governments audi egislatures. "Her Majesty's Government is aware that the distance between Ottawa aud Victoria presents a real dilliculty In the way of Immediate union, but that very dilliculty will not bo without ad vantage If it renders every communication In dispensable, and forces onward tho operations which are to complete it. It appears far better to accept it as a temporary drawback' In the ad vantages of uuion than wait for those obstacles to bo encountered hereafter more intractable, which aro sure to spring up after the neglected opportunity." ' 'i'lio despatch also authorizes Governor Mus grove to communicate with Sir John Young, or take such steps as can be constitutionally taken for promoting tho favorable consideration of tho question. It also says that the Constitution of British Columbia w ill oblige the Government to enter personally on many questions, such as tho condition of tho Indian tribes and the future position of the Government, with which, in case of negotiations between two responsible governments, lie would not bo bound to concern iinsclf. n n vv.-g oriii s m a. It Is saiil to be the Intention of those clergymen wlio have recently left this port to attend tho (Ecu menical Council, to brlnp- to Its attention tho reform of the present nbnscs In regard to opera boufe music In churches. To tell the truth, tho clergy hero havo hitherto been very tolerant of Oirenbach. While he was confined to the stage they said nothing about lilm; when he walked into the church choir they said little. Of late he has monopolized wedding, and no nuptiiils were complete without some of the "lascivious trances" of Vtnwicre or ' be Metre being extracted and Interpreted upon the organ. Tills. I grant, would have been very hard for the preachers to endure. When a clergyman wishes to preach In a theatre, he negotiates with the lessee, and don't pray for a private box, uicaiuu to steal a march upon the audience und harangue them during the performance. Oll'enbach lias not followed this upright example. lie has sneaked Into the tabernacle, and mingled tho melodies of La Vericlwle and Hottlotte with the voice of prayer and the accents of the benediction. Perhaps one ol the resultBof the (Ecumenical Council will be a know ledge of what good church music consists of. Henry Ward Bcecher hit the bull's-eye in tills respect. You hear no oprra-bovferimn at Plymouth Church, ex cept In so fiir as Ilenry-Waril-ltecclicrlsins may be so described, and you do hear congregational sing ing something like a Boston jubilee considerably toned down. I'erc Ilynrinthe und hN Oirtionni-lcH. At last accounts Father llyaclntlie was hard at. work ou his English dictionaries, of which he has been provided with a very excellent supply. His linguistic attainments already comprise Greek, Latin, Italian, and Spanish, in addition to 'his native French. Whether or no he is anxious to preach In Lugltsh has not yet transpired, but that, he Is anxious to lenrn the language Is very evident. The seclu sion that he Insets upon in his room at the Fifth Avenue is as rigid as though ho were In a private house, and it Is only Just to Mr. Darling, the proprie tor, to acknowledge that he does everything to main-' tain the exclusion that the holy father so evidently desires. The friends of the late l'mil Spollord have tor the last day or two been busy over their breakfast tallies scandalizing his memory and retail inglanecdotes which do not present hlni m a very dig Hilled or lovable light. Mr. Hpoii'ord answered the con ditions which describe the proverbial wise man he understood the art of keeping money as well as that of getting it. His funeral is to take place to-morrow from his late residence iu Fourteenth street. So well did he understand the art of keeping his money that he grudged even charity, and the severe memory iu which belong held one of his partners for having subscribed one thousand dollars for a charitable purpose still forms a topic lor anecdote with those who well re member the circumstance. His notorious penu Jiousncss was the cause of jokes being frequently played upon him, the "nub" of which was the vexa tion of soul he experienced iu being obliged to pay wine bills which would have been ruinous to a poor man, but were iu rcitliiy trifles to a man of his for tune. Am Baiia. Miul'llc I'liui'n Mrst Concert. It is very seldom, indeed, that so large and bril liant an audience us that of last night Is assembled at a conceit entertainment. The beauty, fashion, and musical culture of Philadelphia were out in full force, and the auditorium or the Academy or Music presented an appearance in the highest degree com plimentary to the artist who was the chief attraction. "Mad'lle Carlotta Pattl, when she appeared here six years ago, made a very decided impression on the best Judges of music. By many she was thought to be much superior to her sister Adelina in the qualities of her voice, and it was ex pected that when her powers were fully matured she would be one of the very linest singers before the public, Blrioc then she has had the advantages of training In the best schools an t before the most criticul audiences In Euroue, aud she came back to us a more linished artist thau before, and with all her vocal resources developed to their utmost ca pacity. Mad'lle Patti's voice lacks the delight rul sympathetic qualities that made her sister Adelina so popular, but she has a wider rauge and a more brilliant execution than that charming little singer at the time she bade farewell to thu t'nited States. Mad'lle Carlotta Pattl has a pure, sweet, and remarkably flexible suwano voice of wide range, but somewhat deficient in power. She has it under perfect control, and executes the most brilliant aud diiricult passages with the most perfect ease. The selections which she sang last night a cavatlna from Linda, a wait, composed for her by Mr. Theodore Itittcr, and the duet from VKlUire d'Avioreweru well calculated to display all these qualities to the best advantage. The brilliancy of her execution, however, did not altogether compensate for her unsympathetic stjle, and the enthusiasm of tne audience visibly cooled as the entertainment advanced. The audience felt, too, that, as the chief attraction of the evening, three airs In a long programme was rather less than Mad'lle Patti's legitimate share, and her refusal to respond to an encore; served to increase the indiffer ence of her hearers. Mr. Theodore Ritter established himself at once as a pianist of very superior accomplishments, aud in every way worthy of the high reputation he enjoys In Europe. He has mere sympathy with ls instru ment than most pcrrormers, aud his playiug was one of the most enjoyable features of the entertain ment. Mr. Pnme Is a One violinist, and in his execution of an AdayUt tt Hondo, by Vleuxteinps, excited a hearty encore, to which he responded with a brilliant piece of execution that brought down a storm of applause. Signor Boucoul, although no longer a young man, is still a remarkable artist, and it is always a plea sure to hear him. lie does not appear to the same advantage in concert as in opera, but his singing of the .nr; al Factotum, and in the duet from L'KlMrt d'A-niote was worthy of all the applause it received, lierr Herrmanns was in good voice, but he appeared to be laboring under a disposition to somnolence, aud his vocalization was too expressionless to excite much enthusiasm. '1'he orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Dietrich, w us excellent, and it gave an admirable support to the singers, aud also rendered In good style the over ture to Maritana and the' coronation march from I.e J'r.,lj: Two of Steinway's grand pianos were used, a large one of superior power aud tone for the perfirinaucis of Mr. r.itler, aud the smaller one for nn accompaniment to tho voices. These were both niagiiillceiit instruments, und under the hands or such a line performer as Mr. Itittcr, their superior utilities were shown to the best advantage. The (lily Auumeiiii'nl..
