on. An extremely Industrious architectural Mldaa
weeros to be at work, transforming everything, not
Into gold but Into marble and granite. At the corner
of Broadway and Cedar street, for Instance, the New
York Equitable Life Insurance Company are putting
up a bulldlnf of giant proportions and built of Con
cord granite. Each, of tho Immense front windows
of this structure has an area of nearly two hundred
iwmare feet. You might exhaust the thesaurus of
cycloptc terms in endeavoring to convey a
Just Idea of the proportions of the several
parts. The general vestibule, for Instance,
is larger than that of any other Insurance
company in the world. Tim building Is expected to
be occupied early In the spring, uud the Intercut on
Its outlay will be more than realized In the rents.
At the comer of Leonard street and liroadway is
another superb structure, erected at the expense, of
one million dollars, and shortly to be occupied by
the New York Insurance Company. It is built In the
English Renaissance style, and the liroadway front
Is of white marble. The only departure from tXe
general magnificence of the building Is the Cathe
rine lane front, which Is partly of brick. Upon these
two bnlldlngs, which are Intended by the respective
companies that are to occupy them as rivals to one
another, about three million dollars have been ex
pended. I. Ike most great rivals, it Is impossible to
give the preference to either, lloih arc very beauti
ful acquisitions to Broadway. The Equitable Assu
rance pretends to more dignity anil repose; the Life
Insurance to tho greater grace and liveliness. The
interior appointments and toilet appliances of both
include the most delicate and luxurious Inventions
of the present day ; and If a clerkly life were a noto
riously happy one, I think I should not hesitate long
as to which company I should honor by accepting a
ginccure there.

These are the only terms upon which meal are
provided at a certain restaurant which has Just, been
opened ou Broadway. Its proprietor has evidently,
some time or other, fallen a victim to one'of those
artists in dinncr-gotting who uro in the habit of

rate, he has opened shop on the principle that you
must not only pay for what you eat, but before you

The opportunity which the thieves of New York
have been waiting for so long has come at last. One
of Uie first acts of the new captain of the Broadway
squad was to remove from the Broadway stages oil
special detectives, who were in the habit of riding
up and down, for the purpose ot detecting diamond
thieves and plckp leKets generally. Henceforth,
these gentlemen the pickpockets, I mean will
have no difficulty in pursuing their profession. All
they will have to do will be to jump in the car or the
stage, as the case may be, to snatch-whatever tliey
fancy, and to jump out again. The accomplished
thief need not fear being seized by any well-dressed
detective, for that institution lias been done away
with, at least so far as the cars and stages are con
cerned, and the business of pursc-suatclilug pro
mises to become easy and lucrative.

Mr. Maurice Neville, who, if memory is faithful to
her seat in this distracted globe, was, two or three
years ago, a member of the stock company at the
Philadelphia Walnut Street Theatre, Is, I perceive,
announced as "the- young Hungarian tragedian,
from the Imperial Theatre, Vienna," and will soon
make his appearance as "Othello' at the Stadt Thea
tre In tills city, where f hey are at present supportlug
German opera bouffe. Tho German tiebutantn whom
we have lately had here are not very great sue
cesses, but I hope Mr, Neville will be an exception.
The critics are divided here as to the merits of
Mary Warner as a play, although they all agree as to
Miss Bateman's representation or the title role. That
is emiuently line throughout quite melting enough
to overcome the old-time objection to her acting as
being occasionally cold.

To-morrow afternoon, at three, an experiment of
a novel nature is to be tried at the Battery. It Is
nothing less than an attempt to extinguish tire by the

Fatigue has been the condition or Pore Hya
cinthe ever since bis arrival on these shores. Al
attempts or newspaper people to view or interview
him have thus far been unsuccessful. The ranks or
all the newspaper staff were canvassed, and those
men were selected who spoke French and had
cheek. It was all no use. To everyone the same
answer was returned: "Father Ilyacinthe was re
posing after his ocean voyage, and could not be dis
turbed." A distinguished cattle-yard reporteress
sent np a pretty little pleadiug, scented note, nit
even he got. shown the cold shoulder. The good
father has thus far shown more moral courage than
was anticipated even from him ; he has succeeded In
passing bis lirst day in America unseen by mortal
