The rumor that a duel had been fomrht in the vicinity of Alexandria, by Colonel Uoyd, tho Military Sheriff of Fuuiiuicr county, and Mosoby, the guerilla, is incorrect. A letter has been received stating that on the 17th of September the island of St. Thomas was visited by an earthquake, which occurred at ten minutes before 3 o'clock P. M., which shook the city of St. Thomas to its foundations. The shocks were so severe as to materially injure many of tho buildings, shattering tho walls of the Spanish and Union Hotels and other large structures, which caused a general panic among the inhabitants and the entire suspension of business. The day had bceu excessively hot, without tho slightest breeze, tho thermometer Indicating '.12 degrees; the barometer 30 degrees, indicating fair weather. In the interval between the lirst shock and 11 o'clock P. M., nine distinct shocks occurred, producing widespread terror and dininny. The writer concludes by saying: "I bad experienced many severe shocks, but nothing to compare with those of yesterday. There has been notbiug like it since the great earthquake of 18t7." A Minvn Correction Irom ;ciirrul Ilifzrn. Brevet Maior-Geiieral W. 15. llazcn, in a let ter dated at Hiram. Ohio, October 4, addressed to the Associated Press, Washington, says: I notice in the special Washington despatches of October 2, published in the West, the follow ing: "Tirr CHEitoKi:n settlers. "Statements from persons well known here, and regarded as perfectly reliable, have been re ceived concerning tho reported outrages by set tiers on the Cherokee neutral lauds. "The writers say that the reports circulated against settlers are. in a great part, manufac tured in the Interest of railroad and land com panies." The foregoing is false In every particular, and flionld be corrected. The parties engaged in those outrages have from tho first ingeniously denied the charges against them in such a way as to prevent, I possible, any inquiry into tho matter by the Government. In September I was sent there with troops on account of these troubles, and a personal inves tigation found all the charges of capturing engi neer parties, partially hanging one of tho engi neers, burning up all their instruments and pro perty, the tools and property of working parties, and many thousand ties, literally true iu every case, besides much that has never been re ported at all, as it greatly retards the prosperity of the country.
