THE DAILY EVENING TELEOIiAPH PHILADELPHIA, FKIDA1' , SEPTEMBER 17, 186'J. PIL8ICAL. APJODIUMATIC. t m ,4Norn,n" T tht Klchlmtn Troupe. Holllnfs opora of Sorma, with Us walling trasric strains, was done to death some fifteen or twenty years ago, when no concert programme was com plete without "Casta 7)1 va" ami lH ear mo, Norma," and every young lady followed suit on her piano; i .If Grl8t Wfts m ber ",ory anl wnon Italian opera in this country was a, novel luxury, scarcely appre. elated or understood except by a limited class. Aorma, with Its florid muslo, its strange tragic story, and the Druid priestess personated bv a groat lyric tragedienne, hit the popular fancy more than any other work, nntll the public got too much of a good thing, and '"Norma" walling forth her woes begun to be voted a first-class bore. Since then, new genera tions of opera-singers and opera-goers have appeared Upon tho scene,' new works have engaged the public attention, and SornM tins been relegated to the i.osi tlon of a standard.work;to be produced once or f w.'ee, perhaps, In the course of a season, and whicn la always welcome because no longer hackneyed. The attempt to produce this work by the Kiclilngs troupe was looked upon as an even more doubtful experiment than the first performance of Fwt, and the auccess which Mrs. Berntird In particular achieved as the heroine, surprised even those who had most conildence In her abilities. It was In this role that Bite displayed a tragic power In her acting that had not been suspected from her personation of less exacting pnns, ami the boldness of the experi ment of rendering such a work in English was fully justified by the results. Last evening A'omwi was performed to a slim house, but the audience made up In appreciation what It lacked In nuinlers. Mrs. llernard has never been In better voice than she has this season, and she acted and sang lat.t evening with a fervor and expression that secured for her ell'orts the heartiest applause. Miss Blancho Ellermann sustained the role, of "Adclglsa," and made a more favorable impression than she did as "Zerlina'' In Pro, Diavoln. In the concerted pieces her voice was hoard with good effect, and the mere fact of singing with -Mrs. llernard appeared to give her conildence. Miss Ellermann bus a good voice of moderate power and limited range, .she sings correctly, but with a total lack of sympathy or expression. .She does not understand the first principles of acting, and in leading role she will not answer at all unless she qualities herself by a severe course of training. There are plenty of young ladies In this city, who make no pretensions to eitner eminent VOCai Or ll'Bl I IUIIIV anilities, .tuwwiim. nur;f hjiuu i;mc ulnar- without any nartlcumr preparation, anil make quite as good an impression ns Miss Kilermnnn has done. With a better voice, she Is by no means as good an actress as Miss Abell, the assistant prima iionna or last year. Mr. ISrooklionse Howler made a creditable repre Bentative of "Polllo," and sang and acted with much spirit. This gentleman rather overdoes things at times, and his style needs toning down, lie ap rears, however, to be a conscientious und pains taking artist, and he Is likely to prove a much more reliable and valuable member 01 tne troupe man nr. llalorh. The nart of "Oroveso"' was well sunir bv Mr. 11. C. Pcakes, and the choruses, although not perfect, were given better than at any previous performance oi tne season. The I'lly Amusements. AT the Academy OFMrsic Mrs. Bernard will have a benefit this evening, when Verdi's opera of Tra viata will be given. We sincerely hope that there will be a full house on this occasion. Mrs. Bernard has labored zealously and conscientiously to bring the English opera up to a high standard, and she Is deserving of substantial encouragement from the musical public of this city. To-moi-row the Bohemian Girl will be performed at ft farewell matinee. At thb Wai.nct Mrs. D. P. Bowers will have a farewell benefit, when she will appear as "Lady Isabel" and "M'nie Vlne'; in the drama of Paul Lynne; or. The Elopement. The performance will conclude With the comedietta of TI.e Day After the Weddiiut, in which Mrs. Itowcrs will personate "Lady Elizabeth Freelove." We hope that Mrs. Bowers will have a full house. On Mondav Mr. Edwin Booth will appear In Hamlet. At thb Eleventh Stkeet Oi-kiia Horsn an at . tractive minstrel performance will be given this evening, in which the entire troupe will appear. The programme will present a variety of entertain ing features, Including the funny sketch entitled Xingbad the Monde, which has made a great hit. The performances at this establishment are adapted to the tastes of those who do not care for ordinary theatrical amusements, aud as a family resort It has a well-merited reputation. fllesNrs. Stoke, Adnlrc, Davis, Hour, ICiiiiii, and (.'loud. PHTLADELPHIAScpt. 10, 1SC9. To the Editor of The Evening Telegraph. Dear Sik: In your editorial last evening upon "The New Democratic Ticket," you say that it would . not be a bad idea for the Republican Executive Com mittee to nominate members of the State Legisla ture in place of Messrs. Stokes, Adaire, Davis. Hong, Bunn, and Cloud, whose course In the Legislature lost winter was so exceedingly objections bio. Your recommendation, If carried out, would save the Re publican partv several members of the next Legisla ture, for few if any of these men can be elected. The writer lives in the Tenth district, which has had the misfortune to be misrepresented by one of these men. By careful observation and inquiry I feel satisfied that Mr. Davis eaunot be re-eleeled, although the district Is largely Republican. The in telligent voters of that party are not going to vote the ticket blindly this full, or at any time, and arc determined not to be sold like beeves at Smlthlield for another year. Tho Democratic party, as you say, lias set us a good example by selecting good men for their citv ticket, li iho bad men on our ticket wont resign, then throw them overboard, commencing with the men whose names head this letter. You may rest assured that lu the bold stand you have made against the members of the last Legislature you have the support of every true. Republican. It would be fortunate for the country if every Repub lican paper would do as much towards purifying the partv. A Fifteenth Wahd Rei-ciii.ican. CITY ITEMS. i New Fall Goods in the Piece. "Let not the sickly season find yoa unprepared," is an equally good mle in medical jurisprudence. The man must be made of iron who finds himself at the close of summer at strong as at its commencement. Such a phenomenon is rare, even among the most robust of the human family. Muscular and constitutional vigor oorcs out of us in the broiling weather of July and August, and few of ns, at the opening of the Kail, are in the best possible condition to defy the unhealthy infloencea of the season. Fever and ague and bilious remittent fevers, together with a variety of complaints that afloat the digestive or gans, the liver and the bowels, form a portion of the Au tumn programme. Hear in mind that exhaustion invites these disorders, and that staminal vigor enables the sys tem to ropel thein. "To be weak it to be miserable," says Satan to his dofeated legions, in "Paradise Lost," and the axiom is correct, though it comoa from an evil source. Ho ! then, ye weak and feeble, fortify yourselves against tho invisible enemy that pervades the Autumnal air. The best defense against miasma is a course of Hostet ter's Stomach Bitters. This rare vegotohle tonio will improve your appetite, stimulate your digestion, givo flrmnoRS to your nerves, invigorate your muscular Blue, regulate your secretions, cheer your spirits, and put your entire physique in perfect working order. It is easily done. The standard tonic and alterative which will recuperate and build you up is not ''bad to take," but, on the con trary, a pleasant medicine. See, however, that you have the genuine article. There are imitationa and counterfeits in the market, and they are all worthless or dcloterious. Boar in mind that Hostetter's Stomach Bitteiis is sold only in glass (never by the gallon or cask), and that each bottle bears a label urmoiinted by a vignette of St. George and the Dragon, and our revenue stamp over the cork, A Famocs Stock of FALL AND WINTER CLOTHING, SUCH AS TIAS NEVER before been seen, HAS BEEN PHEI'AKINU PUKING THE TAST TUKEE MONTHS, AT Oak Hall Blii.dinos, Sixth and Market Streets, Phila.
