Prom Our Own Cvrrttjxmamu
New York, Sept. 2, 18a!).
rtaln Albert Defcroot, who Is not altogether
unknown to fame, and who might be excused
tor thinking that the sun rises and nets for
Commodore Vandcrbilt, has Just finished a work
upon which he has been engaged for two years
and one week, and which has reduced hlin from
one hundred and ninety pounds weight to one
hundred and forty, lie Is a nlco, plausible man,
takes well with newspaper people, has a jolly,
sociable way, and spreads extensive "feed," at
which champagne flows like water and wit
flows like champagne. The work upon which
he h:is been engaged is
The Allrsnrlrnl lt-prpcnnlon of Commodore
Innricrbill' in Jlron.o.
He showed me the completed design of it yex-
terday afternoon, and I should have been de
lighted with it even if ho had not asked mo
immediately afterwards to partake at 4 P. M. of
a collation that he had provided at a certain
place in St. John's Park. I declined the colla
tion. I always do. But I admired tho bronze.
The work is stupendous. The figure of Vandcr
bilt U particularly good. Tho bronze chef
d'wuvre will occupy tho top of the front of the
new depot erected on tho site of old St. John's
Park. Over half a million of dollars have
already been expended upon it. In honor of its
having been completed, some of the best repre
sentatives of Getham journalism yosterday
afternoon partook of tho Degroot collation, and
recovered Mifliclcntly to go to their evening
work comparatively sober. But let me
In a few words be as explicit as possil ,1c upon a
subject which is really very Interesting and im
portant. During the past month fifty men have
been secretly employed in erecting this bronze
work on the north wall of the new Hudsom Hiver
Kailroad Depot. It contains Commodore Van
dcrbilt's life in bronze. The project was con
ceived in 1807 by Captain Albei t Tcgroot, the
builder of the Prcscott House on Broadway, and
the former commander of the Reindeer, the
Niagara, and other Hudson river steamboats.
He secured the services of Mr. Ernest Plussman,
one of tho most Bklllful artists In tho country,
and an immense foundry was built for the pur
pose of making the castings. Ten mouths
elapsed before tho models were completed.
Last September the work was cast in smarc sec
tions of manageable size. The various parts
were securely boxed up, and by means of an
immense scaffolding hoisted to their places and
held there by more than 2000 iron anchors,
weighing more than four tons. Tho completed
work covers more than 3125 square feet, in a
straight line, and thirty-one feet in extreme
height, weighs nearly 100,000 pounds, nud
costs, as I have said, more
than $500,000. It consists of an immense
bronze statue of Commodore Vandcrbilt, which
occupies the centre, and which Is surrounded by
those scenes which symbolize his progress from
his youth to his old age. It is twelve feet high,
nearly solid, weighs four tons, and is probably
the largest in the world. It follows the well
known photograph by Brady, and represents the
Commodore with head uncovered, wearing a
heavy, fur-trimmed overcoat, his left foot slightly
advanced, his right hand inserted beneath his
vest, and his left extended. The bas-relief Is
ten feet high, and terminates in massive scroll
work, representing leaves and plants. On the
right hand is illustrated the Commodore's marine
life, on the left his railroad life. At the right
are Neptune, grasping a rudder, and the Pali
sades of the Hudson, with Drcd, the little two
masted "perryaugur," in which, fifty years ago,
Vandcrbilt carried passeugers from New York
to Staten Lslaud at two shillings a head. It
would be tedious to follow the allegory through
in all Its minute details. It is sullieleut to say
that both the marine and the railroad life of tho
Commodore arc followed out on a scale at once
gigantic and minute, and that the result is a
ma.itcrpiecc in bronze such as was never before
witnessed in this country.
Governor IIofTmnn
was in town yesterday. 1 saw him walking
down Broadway alone, and as unconcernedly as
though he were only Mayor, instead of Oovornor,
and in the habit of signing orders "O. K.," as
Mayor Oakey Hall, I ought to eay.is in the habit
of doing. Tliis Is what it is to have a man of
genius (instead of a man of judgment) for
Mayor. Your men of genius are always sinners
against the proprieties. Give them a hinch
as an Englishman once said to me), and they
take a hell or send you to it.
Count Johanne
has been writing one of his characteristic three
column letters to the Ilcrald in defense of Lord
Byron. That gentleman (Count Johannes, not
Lord Byron ) always puts one In mind of "Mr.
Solomons" In Tlie Stranger, the amount of cor
respondence and the degree of intimacy he man
ages to keep up with distinguished people in all
quarters of the world being something truly
amazing. His present pretensions in regard to
Lord Byron tiro that he was well acquainted
with his half sister, Mrs. Colonel Leigh, and
mildly Intimates that Queen Victoria and ho
were not far from nobuobbing together over his
Lordship's character and Mrs. Leigh's tea and
toast. The Count says he would dofcid Lord
Byron's character to the death, if necessary. Ho
floes a great deal better in having defended it to
the life. I am sure no one in New York could
' do it better, although if the defense came to bo
lccide(l bv mortal combat the Count would pre-
lialilv flud that the peii Is mightier than tho
sword, or the pistol cither, for that matter.
There is only one man better known in New
York newspaper ollicca than Cuuut Johanucs
(with that brown wig and that black coat), and
that man is Daniel Pratt, the great American tra
veller. Every editor feels like travelling when
Piatt or the Count comes around.
I thought
Annie I.oiimIuIc,
the plump Miultrette, was dead long ago, but
now it seems -lie is to play the pari of "Mrs.
linker, in Formosa, at Niblu's. The last time
I saw her was eight or nine vears ago at the
then Continental Theatre, iu Philadelphia
on Walnut street, above J-.lnlitli. tsho was then
saucy, blooming, and obese. She must now be
fair, fat, and 1 am afraid to say ut what "lustre"
the remaining f would Hunch me: but report
fays that her complexion Is jiiht as fresh and her
smile just as rippling us ilicy were ten years ago.
e shall see.
Mrs. Stanton wants Ida Lewis to come to New
York and open
A I'unbkounUlo Kivliimilng School for YomiK
I think the idea Is a good one, looking at it in a
strictly business point of view. "Young Ladles'
Natatonum would look well, and I dare say,
ven if the project did not gueceed aeeordlug to
Mrs. Stanton s expectations, It would at least
ret along swimmingly. Theodore Tllton W de
termined, if be has any Influence, that, when his
Ideal negro woman becomes Prcsldentess of the
republic, Miss Ida Lewis shall be Socrctarycss of
the Navy.
Every time I see
Horace fJrrelcr
I expect to seo the sawdust roll out of him, for
ho looks moro and more like a great disjointed
doll. He regularly makes his appearance in
front of tho Tribune ofUcc about noon, as though
ho were bent on taking it by storm, and bearing
an Immense portmanteau, which it Is the un
alterable conviction of tho bootblacks and uews
boys contains his editorials for the day. This
account of II. G. is strictly voracious, and I
hope those editors who do mo the honor of
copying my remarks will give due credit there
for. This pattern of giving credit is one that I
am proud of scttlug, and I herewith commend
it to those editors who copy my letters, and do
riot copy ahem I my example. Ai r B aha.
