The News says: " When Mr. Dickens left on
his last visit to America we expressed a hope
that he might do service in the cause of peace
and good will. Mr. Dickens has not resigned
this peaceful mission. Nothing could bo in
better taste and feeling than his hearty speech
at the banquet on Monday evening. Ilia wide
and intimate knowledge of his countrymen
enabled him to express the admiration and
esteem which the Harvard men have earned
for themselves in England. We hope thero
will be a return match in America, and feel
confident that Oxford will meet as hrothorly a
welcome there as Harvard has here. We re
joice that our kinsmen arc satisfied with the
arrangements of the race.
."We trust, lor all time, that there may bo no
other or less generous rivalry between the
pride and flower of Old and New England.
Transatlantic Canihridgo has upheld the honor
of her ancestral name in patriotism, states
manship and intellect, and lastly, in dignity
in defeat. To errors of impetuosity and
impatience rowing authorities attribute the
defeat. These are the excess of qualities of
an old stock; the temperainvnt of a people's
youth. What may not the alliance of two
such rivals do lor the belter futuro of the
world?"
The Standard protests against the annual
recurrence of an international lace, and thinks
it hardly right to exact such physical and pe
cuniary saciiliees every year, By severe
training the Harvards won a position to en
title them to come as chaileners. A second
trial would involve a strain of physique and
an interruption of studies vliich it is not fair
to exact for the gratilka'ion of rivalry aud
the sporting world. The t.uidard trusts a
renewal of the contest will ho formally re
sisted for some years.

The Times, commenting on the crime, re
gards it as a national misfortune. It shows

the narrow limits to which it has hitherto been
confined. The county of Ma is now stained
with atrocities which' have disgraced Tippe
rary and Westmeath.
