Last evening, a few minutes before 7
o'clock, a fire broke out in the extensive esta
blishment of James S. Earle fc Sons, impor
ters of looking-glasses, oil paintings, etc., at
No. SKI Chesnut street. Smoke wan first seen
coming from the third story windows, but
when the doors were broken in, the first floor
was one maRS of flames. The firo, owing to
the combustible nature of tho contents, spread
with frightful rapidity, and in a few moments
the entire structure was enveloped. The fire
men were on the ground in largo numbers,
and were actively engaged from tho begin
ning to tho close of the conflagration. The
Mcsm s. Earle had a largo stock on hand, con
sisting of looking glasses, oil paintings, prints
and picture frames, valued at i '..", (itio, which
was utmost totally dt strayed. On this there
are insurances sufficient to cover tho loss, in
tho Union, Mutual, Pennsylvania, North Ame
rican, Liverpool and London, and Royal In
surance Companies. The real estate is owned
by Mr. James S. Earle,, and No. SIC Chesnut
street, which extends through to Sansoui
street, is valued at A7.,0(t(), covered by insu
rances chiefly in tho Pennsylvania Firo and
Hand-in-llaud.
The building in Sansom street, on tho eis.
of the principal establishment, is owned and
occupied by 5lr. Earle, and it is used for a
frame manufactory. This was not burned,
but tho stock is damaged by water. Tho only
other occupant of the Earle building was Mr.
S. B. Waugh, portrait painter, who had a
room in the third story. His loss is u-jt
known, but it is believed not to bo heavy.
Tho structure was a handsome brown-stone
fronted one, and was erected ly Mr. Earle to
suit his business, after I he great lire which
destroyed the Chinese Museum and oilier
valuable properties.
No. Sl-l, a handsome three-story structure,
was occupied on the first Hour and basement
by J. W. Scott it Co., as a gentleman's fur
rishing store. Their loss could not bo esti
mated, as a great deal of their stock was
saved from injury by the insurance patrol.
They are fully insured.
The remainder of the building was in pos
session of Whittaker & Co., photographers,
whose loss is estimated at ij.i.100; no insu
rance. A portion of the second door was titled
up by Dr. J. J. Strawu as an oflice, whoso
loss amounts to (fOiK); no insurance.
Another portion of the same floor was oc
cupied by Leak it Smith, Masonic mark en
gravers. Iheir loss is supposed to bo sai ill.
On the sityne floor, a Mr. Walker was doing
business as agent for Hitchcock's Dime Music.
The greater part of his stock was saved, and
his loss is' probably small. The building is
owned by Mrs. Deborah F. Walton.
The above losses were from water alone.
No. 818 is occupied by Mr. John Wanna
mnker, clothier, who fortunately sustained
but little damage, and that by water alone,
the firo not reaching the building. The loss
will not exceed "1000, and that is covered by
insurance. The real estate is owned by Mr.
J. H. Brown, of New York.
The carpets, furniture, etc., of tho dwelling
of Mr. Horace Tuttle, No. K0', Sansom street,
were damnged to tho extent of about $2"0 by
a line of hose, which was run through his
house to reach the rear of tho burning build
in p.
We regret to state that the fire was at
tended by loss of life. Mr. Alfred Hopple, i
member of the Diligent lioso Company, tel
from a roof in the rear of the Earle building
into an area, in which there was three fee
of water, and was so severely injured tha1;
ho died in about an hour afterwards. Do
ceased resided in Sergeant street. He leave,
a family.
Charles Carroll, residing near Second and
Spruce streets, fell into tho cellar of Earle's
building and was burned about the arms. He
was taken to the Hospital.
John Ward, a member of the Hibernia En
gine Company, fell from a back building, and
fractured a leg and an arm, besides Jjeing se.
verely injured about tho head.
William Myers, a mombor of tho Washing
ton Hose and ook Hand Ladder Company, was
severely injured, occasioned by falling from a
lajjcfer.
Several other firemen were slightly injured
by falls, and two of them were hurt by a fall
ing ladder. They were taken from tho ground
before their names could be learned.
About 11 o'clock last night the extensive
livery and exchange stable of David Worth
ington, on Broad street, above Wallace, was
discovered to be on fire. The building was a
two-story brick structure, and had a frontage
of about forty feet. It was also used as a
flour and feed store. The flames spread with
great rapidity, and soon the entire place was
reduced to ruins. At the time of the break
ing out of tho fire there were about forty
horses in the stable, of which number only
two were rescued. The loss, which is very
great, could not be ascertained, as it is not
known what, if any, insurance there was upon
the building. Several of the horses were the
property of private individuals.
Jane Austen's Life will have, we may sup
pose, the pleasant Interest of an idyl. That of
tho late Mies Mitford will hate (probably) details
of a less tender quality, for some of the stern
dramas of life fell to her share. Tlio ''Memoirs
of Miss Mitford." auother of the forthcoming
biographies, will bear on the title-page the name
of tho Rev. (iuy LKbtrange. It is understood,
however, that ho has an excellent colleague in
the work In tho person of Hov. Mr. Harness.
Tho next Life iu Dean Hook's series of
Lives of the Archbishops of Canterbury will bo
that of Curdinal Pole. The subject Is one of
such mingled difficulty aud delicacy, that con
siderable curiosity Is felt a to tlio way In which
il will be treated by the author, lhls work will
be ready by the winter.
Sir Henry James has received orders to
