The niup-Kyrd Baby BunlnrM.
The 1'hiladclphla readers of the most notorl
ons of the New York daily newspapers will pro
bably, at one time or other, have had their
attention attracted to a certain qunrtcr of the
journal wherein parties wishing to adopt beauti
ful blue-eyed babies could be accommodated
upon reasonable terms. Sometimes It Is added
that the adopting party must be a professing
Christian, but more often the advertiser casts
asldo all considerations of faith and practice,
nd confines herself to statements in regard to
the reasonableness of terms.
The bluo-cyed baby business Is carried on to a
greater extent in New York than in any other
city upon the American continent. The number
of bluc-eyed babies that come to the surface in
the columns of the daily and weekly press Is
Immense. Baby-farming is a regularly recog
nized business In ltcU, and those harpies who.
ngagc in the profession are most successful
who part with the greatest number of babies for
a consideration.
There are several of these baby-farmers in New
York. One of them is in St. Mark's Place, where
n female physician, in conjunction with a male
one, undertakes to supply Christian families
with as many blue-eyed babies as may be desired.
She never makes any charge, but it is tacitly
understood that babies of various degrees of
of blue-eyed beauty are to be procured from
her at all prices between SO and 150. The
proprietress has a sharp eye, a shrewd tongue, a
long head, and a sliart manner, and is not capa
ble of being brow-beaten. Another one is on
Third avenue, near to Stewart's. It is located
over a shop, and pervaded with an air of intense
respectability. Indeed, the "respectability" of
these places is their most gratifying and
salutary characteristic. The servant who
opens the door may look dowdy around
the hair and dirty around the neck, but she Ik
respectable! the parlor into which you arc shown
may have cemetery-like mouldiness of atmos
phere, suggestive of new-made graves, but the
pictures on the wall arc scriptural in subject,
and the few ornaments arc unlformably correct
and respectable; the "lady" who receives you is
generally attired in black bombay.iue (as though
she were a Rachel weeping for other people's
children), but the respectability of her appear
ance and language is one of the first things that
Btrikes 3-ou. This Third avenue establishment
is, however, more of an ofllcc than anything else
The real hospital and nursery is "fartlicr-up
town."
In Nineteenth tjcct Is a third baby-farm, and
tliese three are Uitt principal ones y foothum.
I
From these issue most of the advertisements
which dupes, blest with n children of their
own, and wishing to adopt those of others, so
readily answer. Scattered all over the c ity are
smaller ones, where the business is less artisti
cally conducted, and the police descents upon
which render a temporary residence there ex
tremely risky.
It is in holes like these that the nobodies'
children of New York, who somehow or other
arc "left over," and never adopted out. go
through protracted courses of ill-treatment
which finally bring tljem to the grave. What
ever sorrowful chance may have taken the in
nocent visitor to 6uch a house, he will have re
marked with inexpressible compassion the old
countenances of the withered and unhappy little
children that there abound. These are the blue
eyed babies that the advertisements run about,
and which the female physician is so desirous of
adopting out into a Chistian family where they
may experience the comforts of a home.
Wretched children of nobody, I am sure they
need it, for the tender mercies of the woman on
whoso hands they are left are sure, sooner or
later, to conduct them to the grave.
Some of tliese children escape death, however,
by being sent to Randall's Island, whose nur
series received during the year 1803 over eleven
hundred such children. Here their condition is
at least a little better than under the roof-tree of
the venal friend who assisted their mothers (at
the rate of 25 per week) in bringing them into
the world. They receive at least some educa
tion. The girls arc taught sewing, and the boys
get some inkling of fanning. Thenee, periodi
cally they are sent West, and in a lew years no
small proportion of the population of the prairie
peopled West will consist of the grown-up
children of nobody. At the same time the con
dition of the juvenile occupants of Randall's
Island those little illegitimate ones is nothing
to brag of. The nurses there who take charge
of the younger children mix a great dea'
of their milk of hdinan kindness with bad gin
and educate the innocents to a love of whisky.
The mortality among the infant population U
extremely largo. Last year much more than
ono-hulf the entire number ndni'ttcd died. The
various children's hospitals and other charitable
Institutions for children established in the city
do something towards mitigating this evil, but
all the benevolence heaped together seems but
as a drop in a bucket. It is one of the great
shames of New York that there are such exten
sive facilities for tlio "putting away" of no
body's children, and one of the first steps to
wards reform should bo the abolishment of all
such advertisements as the blue-eyed baby ones.

Painless joestion.-"No mn," says Sir Artier
Oooper, "onsht to know by his sensations that he has a
tomaob." In other words, when digostion la pnrfeot there
is neither pain nor uneasiness in tbe region where it takes
place. Nausea, want of appetite, flatulency, oppression
after rating, shooting pains in the epigastrium, a flushing
of the face at meal times, and a furred tongue In the
morning, are among the direct symptoms of indigest ion
Constipation, biliousness, headache, nerrous irritability'
physical weakness, and low spirits are Its almost Invaria
ble accompaniments. All these indications of Dyspepsia,
whether Immediate or secondary, are usually aggravated
by hot weather.
Tbe close of summer is, therefore, the season when the
victim of dyspepsia most urgently needs a tnnio and regu
lating medicine. Of coureo, every invalid ba many ad
visers. One Mend recommends one drug, another an
other; but in a multitude of counsellors there is not al
ways safety. Tbe standard remedy of the present age for
indigestion, in all its stages, is Hortetteh'h Stomach
liiTTKim. Time, that proves all things, has established its
reputation on an impregnable foundation the sponta
neous testimony of millions of intelligent witnesses. No
acrid oil or acid defiles its stimulating principle ; its tonio
constituents are the finest that botanical research has yet
discovered ;lt combines tbe properties of a gentle evaonant,
a blood depurent.and an anti-bilious modicine, with invigo
rating qualities of the highest order, and is admitted both
by tbe publio and the profession to be the surest protec
tion against all diseases that are produced or propagated
by pestiferous air or unwnolesome water, that has ever
been used either in the United States or Tropical America.
In canes of constipation rosulting from a want of muBCU
lar tone in the intestines, tho effect of the Bitteiii is per
fectly marvellous; and without the dangerous sequences
of mercury, it restores the disordered liver to a normal
condition.

HERRING'S SAFES
AGAIN Tl'STED !
V0KKEBS, N. Y., August 13, 1809.
Messrs. Herhino, Fakkkl a Sherman, New
York Gentlemen: At the great lire here on Bun
day night last (Nth mst.), which covered an area of
two blocks, we had two of your Safes in our building,
which passed safely through the ordeal. When tlrat
discovered they were sorrouiuleil by burning lumber,
und bear evidence of having had a severe test, as our
place of business occupied seven lots, all covered
with buildings and lumber, all of which were en
tirely consumed, and to this heat the Sufos wore
exposed. It was with great satisfaction that we
found, upon cutting into our Safes, as they were so
warped and swollen they could be opened In no
other way, that our books and papers und money
were all saved ; indeed, the bills came out of the Safe
without a singe, and nothing is discolored but the
binding of the books. Respectfully yours,
ACKKRT A O.TJICK.
