V V WE wnw.Yonm szvis. Fr&m Our Own Cormponovnt. New York, Aupust 20, 1809. Had I the opportunity of addressing the New York public I should advlac it to keep Its "eyo peeled" for the purpose of noticing the Frightful Dlnrrrpnnrlp trtiich, during the next fortnight, may be ex pected to invade all the departments of the principal New York journals. You ask me why. I tell you. On Wednesday evening about a dozent differcn newspiiper correspondents left this city for Halifax. If I wore to say that they represented the gifts and graces of the' entire New York press it would be rather unfair to those who remain behind. They go for the purpose of doing Prince Arthur upon his arrival there, and will be joined by about half a cozen of the most accomplished Bohemians of Boston. The New York newspapers have been bearing Very heavily upon Mrs. Harriet Beet her Stowe, but not one whit more so than that reckless magazinlst deserves. Kvldently Mrs. Stowe was bent on achieving a sensation, and sho has suc ceeded. She has not succeeded, however, in lifting the veil which concealed the cause of Byron' Separation from bin Wife. Calumnies against the dead poet, as dark as, if not darker than, those presented by Mrs. Stowe, have heretofore been stealthily breathed in so cial life; but the author of "Uncle Toms Cabin" enjoys the dishonor of having been the first to blazon scandal with the indelibility of printers' lnk. Few will be so charitable as to suppose that she has done so for the mere purpose of vin dicating the character of Lady Byron. The truth more probably is that Mrs. Stowe has written so much that she has ceased to write attractively and well, and that she was bound to make her self talked of by doing something extremely un expected. In the note which the publishers address to the press, they expressly call attention to Mrs. Stowc's article in the Atlantic, and de clare that the statements therein arc as indis- putablc as they are new and startling. Messrs. Field & Osgood llkCWUC make the Singularly I DlOdCSt request that While they will be pleased I to have as copious extracts as may be wished I Blade from the article, it shall not be Copied! ntiro ni thov nrn inlnndinir to Uaiin it In I , , r . i . . .... another form, and would be prevented from doing BO Should tUC article UC printed else- I Where complete. The World, characterise- I 11,. 0-..-,i:n l.to -,,..t t, .:.. I f,.u,u.vS.uu.ug '"'l""1' " Article complete. The Tribune makes copious Xtracts. Tho Times condemns it in polite de- Vnciations written by Mr. Jennings, the husband Adeline Henriqucs. Altogether, Mrs. Stowe hieved a success more disastrous than anv uurc couiu nave ueen. RInretzek linn been Making Brick down in Long Island, and now proposes to make money out of opera in New York. It is proba ble that Miss Kellogg will be his principal star. The belief that Clara Louise was going to Eu rope, there to have gifts made her by the Em press Eugenic and the Czar Alexander, and to divide honors with Patti and Nilssou, was a pleasant one but it was a dclusiou. It would have been glorious to think that iu her Ameri can art had triumphed, that as lovely an organ had been sent forth by New York as was ever created iu Italy or Sweden. That glory, how ever, we are denied, and I only hope that Max Maretzek will be as successful during the forth coming season in building up the houses at the Academy as he has been successful at Long Island iu providing the material for houses there. If his bricks, however, are of the Egyptian kind, that can't be inside without straw, I am afraid they will remain unmade, for Miss Kellogg can't provide him with the straw. The accounts which the English papers give tts of "Forniona" arc ndt favorable to that drama, which is to be produced next week for the first time iu this country. The most popular engagements made at any theatre iu the city will probably be those of Miss Bateman and Mr. Jefferson. Hip Van, Winkle has now been presented for three weeks to unabated audiences. When three weeks more have elapsed we shall be expecting Miss Bate man again, presenting our old favorite Iah with that chastened exaltation of sentiment which the experiences of wifehood so often confer. Ali Bad.v. MUSICAL. AN1 DUAMATIC. The Chesnut Street Theathe will open carlv in September, with a new management, a new compauy, and with a completely recon structed interior, llie changes made in tne au ditorium have transformed the ugliest, most in convenient and uncomfortable theatre in the city to the lightest, airiest, and most attractive. The suggestions made in these columns havs for the most part been carried out, and one of the greatest obstacles to the success of the esta blishment has been removed by the exercise of a little good taste. The galleries have been moved back several feet, which w ill give tho house a more open appearance, and allow tho audience to look around and see Itself. A par quet circle has been added, so that the llrst ttoor does not look like a compromise between a mcetinir-house and a casino; the width between the seats has been increased; and last, but not least in the estimation of those who have un eye for architectural effect, the ungainly pros cenium, with its cheap plaster Btatuary, has been entirely remodelled. Improvements have also been made behind the scenes, and the house is now a first-class theatre and a credit to the citv. The management of tho Chesnut is in the hands ol Mrs. M. A. Garrcttson, well known as the manager of the alnut for several years. Mrs. Gurrettson bus obtained the services Of Mr. George Yiniug Bowers, the popular comedian, as stage manager, and Mr. John T. Donnelly as business man.
