He then continued, a id said that if Miss An

Typographical Union then admit her, but they
would not be with the convention. If she is
deemed to ho of more use to the movement than
the Typographical imun, then keep her here,

Mr. Cameron, of ill., defended the admission
of Miss Anthony on tho ground of her admission
to the previous Congress and tho justness of her
claims, and deprecated the proposed wit.lnlni.wnl
of the delegates of the typographical Union of
New York as an indication of tho existence of a
spirit of secession.
n. H. Dailev. of Ohio, in reply, stated that tho

the inside track. There must bo an antagonism
until men and women occupy an equal platform,
chil and political. Why have vou admitted
these blacks to your Congress;- Would vou
have done so four, eight, or ten years ago? The
only thing that made equality 'was the ballot,
and woman is entitled to it. This is the reason
why the black men this day stand here triumph
ant. This is the reason why my presence here
is questioned, and why any "man present dared
to open his mouth Is 'because her constituency
was a dumb constitucnev, and does not possess
the ballot.
The motion to allow the delegates to withdraw
was voted down.
Mr. Cogirvwdl. of 111., felt it his duty, solely
as a delegate of tho convention, and through no

Miss Anthony still retains a scat on the lloor

A motion was made to reconsider the vote,

from this
statement it will be seen that the
net earnings were iy-lOo.USS'44 on a capital stock
of i:;.ft'l,r)7.)-bl, or a profit of i:i per cent, per
annum on the actual investment. Now, I main
tain that, considering the amount of personal
attention required by this kind of property, this
is not a large luolit.
Now, let us see where tho five-cent faro would
lead us. Tho average price now received is as
near as possible to b.' ,' cents: the Union road
averaged others not quite so much; so 1
think it fair to take (i.'.j cents as the average
price received for all passengers. This would
indicate that the above roads carried 4T,i'.t:i, 0
passengers.
A reduction to five cents would make a differ
ence of T14,:SS'J'(i0
Deduct lrom this the profits for the

:l'.),2'.il'5ii
And wo have an actual loss of two hundred
and forty-nine thousand two hundred and
ninety-one dollars and fifty-six cents for the
year's business, or, in other words, it costs a
traction over live aim a nan eeius lor eacn pas
senger carried. It is probably not necessary for
me to call your attention to the fact that six and
a quarter cents of the present currency is only
equal to four and Eixty-niuo one-lnuidredths
cents of the currency received before tho war,
counting gold at :;.i:: premium.
Vou ask why is it that all other articles coming
down, ear hires do not come down too. 1 an
swer, first, that they never were advanced in
the same proportion with other articles, hence
they cannot so soon commence to tall. Again,
passenger railways seem to have been treated us
a contraouna article, ami every species ol tax
to have been placed on them, w hilst nothing has
been taken oil. l oil prooaMy remember that
you once kept us company in a tax of !2.'.j per
cent, on our gross receipts, nut you managed to
get it oil.
Jn addition to the increase in prices winch
every other business has been subiect to, we
have had added since tho beginning of the war
the following taxes:
by the city per car, equal to a
tax on our proiits i per cent.
by the btate 5 per cent, on tho in
terest on our iHiiKletl debt, equal to
a tax on our proiits of 1 '

T'vvtntv-eight and three-quarters per cent., or
more than one-lourth of our entire profits. Now
I do not call vour attention to this lu any spirit
of complaint, "but simply to remind you that it
is unreasonable to expect us 10 near so neuvy a
shiirb of the nation s burdens, ami at tho same
time to .carry passengers ai oiu-umo prices.
Now I do not believe there is a city in uie world
with equal accommodations at as low prices.
London has just risen from her sleep, and is
now chartering companies to lay runs in ner
streets, aud has thouglil proper 10 limn mo niro
to one penny per mile, with the understanding
that a morning aim eeiun mnu oiwum uu inn

with our present lares. It Is, of course, dillieult
to average the distance at which passengers are
now carried, but 1 think my calculations as near
correct as possible: - .,

The Nashville correspondent of the Cincin
nati t'diniiitrrial writes:
Nearly every paper in the United States has
somethiiig to say in regard to the probabilities
of A. J. turning up in the Senate as a successor
of fowler nnd colleague of lirownlow. In my
opinion, judging altogether by the tone of the
people of this Suite, and the political complex
ion of tlie Legislature just elected, ho is as cer
tain to be elected to that desirable position as
the sun is to rise on tho morrow. No one is
j mimed us his competitor who can stai
' him in the race, and, what is more, in
nd agaiut
no one can
be named who will make a respectable exhibit
when the ballot Is taken. I see that your
! Washington correspondent has much to" say
about Hon. liailie Peyton in connection with
the position, lie may be talked of in Wash
ington, but he is hardly thought of here, that is.
I in connection with the. Senate. Mr. Peyton is
j a high-toned gentleman, an Mil Line Whig, and,
' more than all. he was one of the stauncliest
j l'nion men Tennessee or any other State ever
' produced.
j hut he can't stand against Johnson, nor can
j Klheridge. Cooper, Stoke-, or Seuter. The l.it
' tor gentleman will perhaps come tho nearest to
j it. as many of the newly-elected Senators and
Representatives will feel under obligations to
I him for their positions ami they all ought to
I but the magic name of Andy Johnson will knock
1 Senior and all the balance into "back scats."
! The election for Senator will take place soon
after the Legislature meets, but the chosen man
Avill he unable to take his seat for two years, as
fowler's time will not expire uutil 18V1. but
if Johnson is elected, or even before the election
comes off, no one need be surprised to hear of
fowler's resignation, fowler knows, aud every
body else knows, that ho would never have been
there had it not been for Johnson, and now
that A. J. is in a condition to assume tho
mantle himself, it would be base ingratitude in
Fowler to stand in the way. Let the thirty
five wlio voted to send A. J. up Salt river pre
pare for the arrival of their man and brother,
for it is tolerably certain that he is coming.
