The r.looinfiold (Mo.) Aryan says that during
the jia.-t few months some eii,lit or ten persons
have disappeared from I ronton in such a manner
as to leave no doubt of their having been foully
dealt with, though 110 clue could be trained. A
few days since the body of a man was found in
tiie brush a short distance from tow n, partially
interred, the villains having been frightened
away before they had completed their hellish
work. The body was exhumed and an inquest
bold, which led to the arrest of several per.-ons,
and upon examination it was found that an or
ganized baud of cutthroats have lonir made
!lrouton their headquarters, and such was the
thirst for blood of some of the trantr, that they
killed without provocation or hope of plunder,
which seems to have been their object in most
cases. After the investigation writs"w'('Ve issued
for the apprehension ot other parties, but the
sheriff and his posse was met by an organized
resistance, and after a desperate finht were
lorccd to retire with the lo- of two men killed
nml, several wounded. An armed force from
JellVrson Citv has probably reached there before

From the Texas papers we learn that immense

of Texas by the irrcat Hood which occurred
about the middle of last month. The rivers
(Juaduloupe, i'-n.n Marcos, Gonial, Colorado,
Nevada, and other rivers were all out of their
banks. Manv persons were drowned and all the
rich valley inundated. The Colorado Citizim
pays: A trentleman well acquainted with the
whole Colorado valley from Austin down, and
wbo examined the most of that valley immedi
ately after tbo overflow in 1S5'2, irives tho fol
iowlnu as a near approximate estimate of the
loss of cotton by the present overflow in four of
the river counties: In Colorado county, 8000
bales: in Fayette county, 0000 bales; in Hastrop
county, 4000 bales; in Travis county, '000 bales.

Altogether this is an extremely desirable addi

The work of creeling the large extension of
the 1 lgin 1,'ooin at the British Mii-cum is pro
gressing rapidly. The new chamber will be ap
propiiutcd to lie display of sculptures, includ
ing many examples which have not. hitherto In-cii
shown. The money -.-ranted to t tie British Mil
senm reccnily eoinpri-i'd an estimate for ihe
erection of iron galleries in the Print and Medal
Booms, additions which are very much need 1.
Space for the exhibition of the more generally

The external restoration, or rather rebuild
ing, of the Chapter House of Westminster Ab
bey, is now, so far as regards the larger
features of that work, alnio.t linished. The
wooden part ol the roof is placed, and h is yet
lo be covered against the, weather: the parapet
has been renewed throughout, also the living
buttresses and the detached pieces on which
they rest: a new buttress and pier have been
erected in the space which is in front of the en
trance at Poets' Corner, so that approach is now
had to tho Abbey in that quarter under the lolly
Hying buttress of this pier. The new external
works look remarkably well: so far us they are
conccrjicd the Chapter Mouse is a new "one.
The internal works are being carried on with
energy: we may shortly take an opportunity of
adding to our former remarks on this very in
teresting work. The exterior of the Chapter
House was until recently so completely defaced
thai, 110 objections can be urged against its re
building. It is now a fine piece of architecture.
The British Museum has recently acquired,
by purchase, from M. l'iof. of Paris, a'line bronze
statue of n boy playing at the immemorial game
of iiiiirn, by bidding up two o'. the fingers of his
left hand, in order that a playfellow may guess
their number. This work is in complete pre
servation, except a slight delect on the left
ankle, which may have been attached to a sup
port or accessorial clement of the design. It is
remarkable for its line condition, execution, and
size, was found at Foggia, and dates probably
from the Macedonian period of Art, as appears
from the luxurious style and treatment of the
plump contours of the subject. Also for tho
reproducing in bronze of jewels such as were
worn on the heads; among these is one on the
forehead. From the forehead the hair of the
child is turned -back in a double curl or roll on
the middle of the head, and secured at the vertex
by a second jewel; the triple ends of the curl
terminate in minor jewels. It is a most desirable
addition to the national collection of bronzes.
Mr. Franks has just acquired for the British
Museum, by means of the Slade Fund, some
very lntorestingspecimens of antique, medianal,
and later glass. Among these are three lamps
of Oriental origin and remarkable beauty in
color and decoration. Two of these were in the
Loan Exhibition of IStiJ, Nos. 40(17 and 4!bS,
These formerly belonged to Lord Ashburton
(Mr. Baring), and so were exhibited. They
bear inscriptions stating that they were made
by order of the Emir Taktizdemir, chief of the
Council of El Meliken-Nasir t U'.KI KUl), some
time Governor of Egypt and Damascus One of
these lamps is 1'JJi inches high by !( inches in
diameter; the other i'.i inches high by '.!; inches
in diameter: also a patera, surmised to be of the
third century, with the plumes of Isls in gold
upon the lower side of its centre. Another
patera of (dear glass, with a radiating fern-like
pattern of opaque green glass or enamel, en
riched with birds in white. Ilowcrs in blue, and
with the fronds tipped with yellow; seventeenth
century. A Venetian marriage-goblet of blue
glass, having busts introduced within the wed
ding-rings In enamel, by which, with other or
naments, it is decorated. An antique Roman
boat, of dark blue glass, shaped with the wheel
and hearing traces 01 tne tools on its surface; a
small Roman amphora of like material: and
noble antique bowl, or wide-mouthed vase, of
most interesting character.
