James Maguire, aged about twenty-two years,
was admitted luto the Pennsylvania Hospital
last evening with a dangerous wound iu his left
breast, received during an altercation on New
Market street, above Willow. It appears that
about 5 o'clock last evening, Maguire, with
Thomas Doruan, aged seventeen years, had
pone into the lager beer saloon of William Leek
leld, No. 445 New Market street, where they
met a third party. Calling for drinks, they were
told they could uothave any,as they already had
had too much lhpior. 'lhey then eat down

closely followed by Maguire, who sat dowu on
the step, and feeling sick, commenced vomiting
ou the pavement. Mrs. Leekleld brought out a
bucket of water, and in throwing it on the tilth,
splashed some of it on Maguire, who became
angry, and pulling out a knife, dared Mrs. Leek
feld to come out, saying he would give her some
of that (the ImitV). A club was then thrown out
of the place, w hich struck Donun on the head.
He then attempted to get M iguire away, but
the latter re.lused. and started up the steps. Mrs.
Leekleld had by this lime secured another club,
with which the hit Maguire several times.
Maguire then went into the street, and picking
up a brick threw it at Mrs. Leekleld, but she
got. out of the way in time to avoid the missile.
Mr. Leekleld, who had taken but little part in
thfl a ft ray up to this time, then appeared on the
seme with a revolver, which he discharged, the

picked up and taken to the Pennsylvania Hos
pital, where bis wound was examined, but
owing to the fact that ho was intoxicated, the
Vhjt-iclauH concluded not to probe for the ball
until this morning. It is believed that the
wound is a dangerous one. Leekfcld was
antstcd by Policeman Mulligan, of
the Seventh district, and taken to the
Central Station. Thomas 1 Ionian was also
taken into eustodv and escorted to fh, fVntril
