NEW 3TOn.KXSX.lS.
From Our Own CorreKpomient.
Nbw Yokk, Jnly I'l, 1369.
The opportunities for
Pomolnnlr-al Nnlcldp
rhleh the preen fruiterers who ply their trade
n the Broadway curbstones provldo, are bolng
freely made use of, and cholera murbus must
be expected to be on the Increase until tho ftreen
fruit shall havo become mellow. This will not
be for somo weeks, nnd consequently the
cholera morbus people will have it all their own
way until then. They have tho matter lu their
own hands. Both tho cholera and yellow fever
Beorn kindly disposed towards tho city this year.
Ilithcrto they have tapped but lightly at our
doors, and have not Insisted upon coming in
and making themselves at home. Wo aro fer
vently hoping that the season has gone by for
cholera to slay its thousands and yellow fever
Its tens of thousands. The Hoard of Health, to
bo sure, aro doing all in their power to lay the
city subject to an epidemic. The streets in cer
tain quarters aro choked up with garbago, and
wherever tho tenement-house clement provails,
there do you find also tho elements ofcontagious
disease. But although the weather of tho past
few days has been eminently favorable to con
tagion, tho deaths even of infants from cholera
Infantum have been few, and less than the
usual percentage of funerals have visited tho
cemeteries and burial grounds.
VUr Hall I'nrU
is going to bo reclaimed. The greater portion
of it Is at present an arid-looking plain fenced
lu by Iron rails, around which aro posted tho
venders of penny eongs, ice-cream one cent a
glass and two upoons at that, solfcrino-colorcd
lemonade, Washington piqp, cholera-produeing-warrantcd
watlles, oyster soup, seaweed tobacco,
and other delicacies. 'Kopers-in, bummers,
loafers, and tho dregs from gambling-holla infest
It by day, and abominable creatures a shade
lower than all theso convert it into a silent, fur
tive pandemonium at night. Let such disport
themselves whilo they can, for the end of these
things is at hand. Simultaneously with the
commencement of the new post olllcc, an effort
Is to bo wade to reclaim the City Hall Park. The
long-contemplated plaza is to be built. Decent
brick la to pavo the parched and colorless area
i . mat now extends south ol the old City JIall,
y and handsome plats of green, fringed with
flower-borders, are to interstice the space be
tween the old and the new buildings. All trees
of respectable growth are to be retained, and
the idea ia to make the at present demoralized
City Ilall Park one of the most beautiful and
useful spots in the city. Of course, Mayor
Hall will be permitted to fire otf cannon there
whenever any of his friends go yachting, or any
other event of national importance occurs.
A Frightened Ldilor.
Yesterday afternoon, as one of the assistant
editors contacted with one of the smaller jour
nals of the city was placidly eating his dinner at
the St. Nicholas Hotel the journalist in ques
tion baa a small private fortune, and therefrom,
and not from his salary, defrays the expenses of
these palatial repasts he was suddenly para
lyzed by beholding lixed upon him the eyes of
an Immense woman sitting opposite. The im
mense woman was a blonde, llorid in feature,
with broad, blue, beaming eyes, and a profusiou
of fine brown hair cut short, and owing its deli
cate golden glints to the profane touch of no
aurcatoS mixture. Warm as the weather was,
she wore a tight-fitting velvet dress, which set
off her symmetrically rounded flesh to the best
advantage. Tho journalist in question is a
small man, a weak man, a nervous man. Con
sequently he may be excused for choking
over , his soup, and catching his breath
at the soupcon that the voluminously-fashioned
Germauesquc beauty opposite him boded him no
good with her fixed look. It suddenly occurred
to him that in the journal he represented ho had
penned unnumbered editorials reflecting bitterly
upon one Madame Anncke, the living image of
this velvet-robed Amazon. To swallow another
mouthful of dinner under these circumstances
was impossible. In vain he tried to "bolt" that
plate of soup, in vain addressed himself to the
fish, or essayed to disport his palate among the
ocean of edibles that lay spread out before hiai.
Digestion and appetite had dissolved partner
ehlp, and he was jnst about to rise and precipi
tately retreat, when the lips of the female opened,
and from them issued these remarkable words,
In the most nasal of Yankee drawls:
"Blest if that ain't our old neighbor Sam .
Haeow der dew, Sam ?" and a stalwart arm was
stretched across the crowded table.
Sam had the presence of mind to retain his
seat and accept the proffered baud. Recogni
tion came to him finally, and in the broad, jolly
features ho had taken for Madame Anneke's, he
discovered those of an old flame of his whom he
had not seen for many years, and whom a change
for the better, in circumstances, had helped to
make a lady of, and removed from her native
home in Massachusetts. The fright was salutary
to the journalist, however. Tne ady's resem
blence to the famous Madame Anneke is
wonderfully striking; and henceforth he will
abuse that lady no more in his newspaper.
Dramatic Memoranda.
The report that Barney Williams nnd wife are
soon going to San Francisco, and thence proba
bly to Australia, is true. Barney, I think not
that my opinion ia of any moment, however ia
foolish for doing so. He lives elegantly at Bath;
his household, consisting of his wife, hia child
(a lovely little girl), his mother and himself,
and six or seven servants. He has a fortune of
nearly half a million of dollars, and Is sur
rounded by everything' calculated to make a
man happy even though the man be an Irlsh
. man. The fact Is, however, he wishes to make
tho "nearly half a million" quite that amount,
and so compete with his professional brother,
William Wheatlcy, who lives In elegant widower
is hood at Coney Island, and. with the babble of
green old age, deals extensively in remlnUences
of the Mack Crook. Am Baiia.
