A correspondent writes from Paris:
An artist who met with immense success in
Paris this year is the famed American pain
ter, M. Dierstadt. He is located at the Grand
Hotel, and his union there is one of the most
interesting in a social and artistic point of
view. It is the gathering place of celebrities
in the literary world, be they English, French,
or American. Three magnificent paintings,
which have not yet been exhibited, are au ad
ditional attraction. One is called "lindal
Veil," a view of the Yosemilo Valley, and most
propitious is the name given to this superb
work. It was commenced at Home and
finished in Paris. A golden mist is seen to
rise as if lifted from tho front of the rocks by
some fairy with rosy-tipped fingers. As the
veil of haze rises, the swift Meroid river is
disclosed, surging at 'ho foot of the crags,
from the interstices of which shoot forth twigs
of maple, branches of daring oak, and cotton
bush. A figure or two on horseback stand
about in mule contemplation on swelling
knolls in tho front ground, and under the
shade of gigantic oaks. Tho small but well-
proportioned stature ot the men makes tho
colossal ridge of rocks appear all the more
imposing and majestic compared thus to tho
snuulness ot tho "lords ot creation.
The other work which vies with this is a
"Storm on the Prairie." A drove of power
ful buffaloes are wading through a stream
which divides the forest opposite from tho
prairie, whence a mighty wind is blowing,
and over which a fearful cloud is gathering.
It seems to come along like an exterminating
decree of glooming fatality. The willow and
Cottonwood are twisting, tho blue rock in tho
distance frowns on, and the short underwood
vegetation writhes on tho bushy hills to the
riL'lit. One gleam ot sunshine guides th
terrified drove. Two paintings such as these
are sufficient for the reputation of one man in
his lifetime, and tho crowd of foreign artists
who are ever pouring in to see them euvy such
sites as those which M. 15ierstadt is deter
mined to consecrate his brush to. "Do nothing
but American scenery," he says very quickly,
only it must be owned that ho "does" that
'little'' in a leviathan spirit. An habitue of
M. liierstadt's appeurs to be the other great
painter who sees "great," tho celebrated
marine artist M. Gndin. He is so remark
able a man, and his life, both before ho wont
to America as a marine officer, and since, has
been so eventful, so full of incident and suc
cess, that I shall shortly forward to vour
readers a few features that illustrate the man
and his works entirely. The owner of a name
highly revered and dear to American lovers of
literature is that of Dr. Holland. I connect
it with that of M. Pierstadt and M. Gudin
because I had the pleasure of seeing him
'think" before "Bridal Veil," and we were,in
company with these eminent artists, on a
visit to the collection of the Manpiis of Hert
ford, which is so difficult of access, and at tho
outer gales of which so many say "sesame"
in vain.

A correspondent of the 1'all Mall Gaulle
says:
'If seems that no new work is to bo pro
duced this season for tho special advantage of
Mme. l'atli. who. however, has already a
most comprehensive n pert'iiir, including all
the lightest and some of the most serious
parts in modern Italian opera. Nevertheless,
it Italian opera were not all but ileail, some
Italian composer would surely come forward
to seek an opportunity lor furnishing .umo.
Patti with a new part. There are, indeed,
plenty of parts old and new written tor other
sinters, which Mme. Patti has only had to
appear in to make them exclusively her own;
but this only uroves the force and versi
tilitvof her talent, and does not alter tho
fact that hero is a oreat artist, cenaimy
the ffi-eiitest Italian artist of her time, for
wluiiii thi'vo is no composer in Italy
Mintliv i wiitu If Siirnor Verdi has
ever heard Mme. Patti situ' the bolero from
his Yn.fi a .SieUiitiiicx, that alone ought to
have inspired him with a desiro (leaving tho
ouestion of worthiness on one side) to com-
llv for her. Put tho
conditions under which a composer produces
and disposes of his works have been very much
altered of late. Signor Verdi, without being
very active, must have gained more money in
the pursuit of his profession th:in was gaiuod
by llossini, Donizetti, and Pellini together;
ana he could scarcely find it worm nis wm
to write for the Italian Opera of Paris, still
less for any Italian Opera established in Lou
don, when, since Mr. Lumley's days, the old
custom of producing from time to time au
origund wk haa boon entirely abandoned.
It is said, however, that we shall seo Mine.
Patti this season in a new impersonation
that of 'Valentine' in 1a lhiqueimtH. She is
to resume on Friday tho character of 'Dinorah,'
in Meyerbeer's charming opera of that name;
and she has lately appeared (for the first tinu
thrRe three or four years) as 'Ninetta' in La
(lazza Ladra."

This is an entirely new heater. It is so oonstrnatftd
as to once commend itaelf to general favor, being a combi
nation ot wrought and cast iron. It is very simple iu its
construction, and is perfectly air-tight ; self-cleaning, hav
iug no pipes or drums to be taken out and oloaued. It is
so arranged with upright 11 lies as to produce a larger
amount of beat from the same weight of coal than any fur
nace now in use. The bygrometriu condition of the air as
produced by my new arrangement of evaporation will at
once demonstrate that it is the only Hot Air Furnace that
will produce a perfectly healthy atmosphere.
