iow "lie facts which prove the utter unreliability
nf this Btorv. as obtained from Mrs. Powell, are as
follows--This is the third season that Major Powell
has been enenired In these explorations, and Mrs.
Powell has heretofore accompanied her husband In
all his travels, piissliiK the last winter in tho moun
tains with him and his party. She knows by name
every nu mber of the party. His present expedition
is roiimosed of the fame individuals that were with
him last summer and winter. Among them there
was no such man rs .loan A. Risdon or any person
ta-arlnjt the names tflvori In the Chicago papers of
Saturday as composing the party and as lost. Major
Powell's lirst expedition was in 1S07, and conso
nucntlv he could not have enlisted any man m it as
long neo as Julv, lwift, when Kisdon says he
loliiid it. Again, Kisdon says they were all
drowned on the 10th or lth of May, In the
Colorado river. Mrs. Powell has a letter from her
husband, dated Green Kivcr Station, on the Paolllc
Kallroad, May 22, saying that he expected to start
about the SMh, and the Chicago Tribune, of May 29,
published a letter fro-n him, dated May 24, two days
later, from the same etation, giving an account of
what the party proposed to do, some eiirht days ulter
Itisdou drowns tlietn hundreds of miles away on the
Colorado, Again, there was not an animal connected
with the expedition, tho pimy relying wholly upon
the boats for transportation, as tho expedition was
to be conltncd wholly to regions accessible by
streams; hence there were no '-two teams'' for Mr.
Kisdon to bring away. Further, the party only con
sisted of twelve or llltcen men, and it would be dif
ficult In that number to llnd twenty-live to put luto
a "bark canoe'1 to cross a river and be swallowed up.
The foregoing 1 acts are alone sulileieut to prove
Eifidon's story an entire fabrication, and to have been
gotten up for a sensation, but there are several
others that might be named, showing its extreme
Improbability. Major Powell Is a man of much ex
perience In exploring expeditions, this being his
third season, and his party is chiefly composed of
men who have been wilh him In most of his former
travels, and, with a few exceptions, are men of cul
ture and line scholarship. Major Powell Is a man
of extreme care m all his movements, and there
Is nothing of the foolliardlness alwut him or his
men that would prompt them to trust the
whole party at one time in a "bark canoe" to
cross dangerous rapids. It Is only a few weeks
ain-a hu n-ua In f'hif-iwn mill tlnr, iiml tllO llfliltfl
made expressly for his expedition, each of them hav-'
lug air-tight compartments oi six ieut in length at
each end, as a preventative against any founder
ing In case they should accidentally be thrown into
any rapids. It is not, therefore, likely that ho would
have occasion to trust his whole party In a single
"bark canoe." Major Powell did not expect to
make the Colorado until September. They were
to embark at (.ireen Hlver Station, on the Pacltle
Kallroad. and Bpend June, July, and August
In explorations upon Green rivur, which
is a branch of the Colorado. From these facts, and
others that might be given, we think the friends of
those connected with the expedition need feel no
uneasiness as to their safety. Neither need there be
uneasiness for waut of later news from the party
themselves, as they took ten months' provisions,
thinking It might be that time before they again
emerged Into the limits of civilization, although
Major Powell thought they might come out late In
the fall. Mrs. Powell says she shall feel no fear If
she has no further word from her husband for ten
months. The telegraph tells ns that Major Powell's
mother, who lives in Wheaton, Illinois, has a letter
from hint dated May 28, and does not credit the
8tory at all.
A FEMALE POISONER.
A Hotel Servnnt lilrl Tries to Kill Her Fellow.
ServuiitM.
A fearful tragedy came very near being enacted
yesterday afternoon at the United States Hotel, cor
ner of Fulton and Water streets. One of the ser
vant girls having an antipathy to the other servants,
undertook, it is alleged, to murder them by the
Wholesale through the subtle agency of poison mixed
In the sauce prepared for their after diuner dessert.
The following are the particulars of the case as they
transpired yesterday afternoon before Judge Dowl
lng at the Tombs, before whom the accused poi
soner was taken :
Wiufred Price, a young and comely looking girl,
Who gives the city of Tloston as the place of
ner imimij ami resilience until a tew weeks ago,
was employed a few days since by the proprietors of
the United States us servant girl.
According to the statement of Mr. Terry, one of
the proprietors, she at once begun acting I'u a man
ner that evoked the geiuTdl dislike of the other ser
vants, causing several complaints to be made
against her. If any one crossed her she would, 11 is
alleged, say to them, -1 11 kill you if you don't mind !"
or threat to this effect. Nothing, however, was
thought of these threats, although, owing to her
strange behavior, which was thought to be only
the result of an untoward and perverse' disposition
on her part, several attempts were made to dis
charge he, but she would insist ou staying, and
id stay. Yesterday forenoon she was, if
anything, more violent in her denunciations than
ever before, ami more pointed in her threats of ven
geance. "I ll lix you all," she said, as they were
eating breakrast, "before night." As the servants
were eating some apple dumplings prepared for
tiessert, a strange taste was noticed in the sauce.
Mr. terry was at once sent for and questioned the
gin, and, finding her answers very equivocal, ex
amined her, and found in her possession u bottle con-
on,lfnm?.1ue.Lau,,ani;n'-, u was conclusive that
laudanum had ban n.lxed with the sauce.

Some remarkable experimonts hare been
made in France on the relative rapidity wit n
which mwwagos pass through a trPh"
wire and impressions are conveyed tlirongn
the nerves to the brain; and the result estab
lished is that the electric message travels with
A swiftness many thousand times greater than
the physical sensation, which is transmitted
onlyat the rate tf thirty metres m a second
Thus, supposing a whale thirty metres (about
103 feet) in length to be wounded in the tail,
a second would elapse before the brain would
le informed by the nerves of the event, and
another second would expiro before the will
of the brain could bo conveyed to the caudal
muscles and action be taken to resent the
injury, thus leaving an appreciable interval
for the escape of thu olFender. This thoory is
strongly opposed by Claude Bernard and other
eminent physiologists, who affirm that the
limbs can take care of themselves without
instructions from the brain; and quote in
support of their opinion the fact that if a re
cently decapitated frog be touched on tho side
with the point of a lancet, ho will endeavor
with the hind claw of the corresponding side
to push away tho oflonding instrument, which
would appenr to indicate the existence of ner
vous centres distinct from the brain. A still
more curious and hitherto unexplained fact is
that, if during tho above experiment tho claw
bo forcibly withheld from the part touched,
the animal will endeavor to use the other
claw for the same purpose This experiment,
which clearly shows lhat some process of rea
soning is carried on in the docupitalod body,
and is an apparent contradiction of the uni
versally admitted theory that the brain alone
is the seat of intelligence, has excited great
curioRity in scientific circles; and one shud
ders to think of the fearful massacre of frogs
which is certain to ensue during the investi
gations now actively carried on with a view to
clear up this physiological mystery.
A few weeks ngoagrcat "Turkestan ex
hibition" took pine u at St. Petersburg great,
not in respect of its value, but rather in
respect of the sensr.tion produced by it in
governmental circles, as well as ' among the
middle classes, tho maas of the people in
Kussia being completely lndiilerent to Asiatic
coinmests. Ihe exhibition had been ar
ranged, under tho superintendence of the
Governor of lnrkestan. General Kaulmann,
by several of tho' o'Jficial as well as unofficial
representatives of the new settlement.
Everything that wild give an idea ot the
character of tho country was brought to
gether zoological end mineralogical collec
tions, military trophies, specimens of Asiatic
costumes, writings, nnd paintings, photogra
phic views of the most important citios, etc
The general impression produced by tho ex
hibition was that Kussia has made a splendid
acquisition as regents the natural produc
tions of the new coi'ntry. Specimens of coal
and raw silk attracted general attention, as
being articles of which Kussia is most in
want. Coal is, in fact, the main question for
the ' Kussian settlement in Central Asia.
Only a few years ii'o the Government paid
as much as t'O rouMes (t';5) for the convey
ance of each bag of flour weighing about 3
cwt. from Orenburg to the military posts on
the Syr-Daria, a distance of :i."0 miles. Under
such circumstances the maintenance of the
Kuhbian dominion in Central Asia would be
qtiite impossible. Collieries give them the
means of establishing communication by rail
through the Steppes ns well as by steamer
along the Syr-Daria and Amou-Daria in con
nection with the Aral and Caspian seas. Con
sequently the Imperial family, who went to
this exhibition eti mi'xse, nnd who usually pay
attention only to military trophies and curi
osities, showed quite an unexpected interest
in the various specimens of coal. The Em
peror also examined some specimens of Eng
lish printed calico for the markets of Central
Asia, which had been imported by one of the
Kussian merchants, conversing at' consider
able length with tho importer about tho
means which might be taken to supplant this
material by Kussian chintz, and expressing
his opinion "that English calico is far too
good and too dear for Asiatics. "
The North German consuls in Japan re
port that the establishment of a central gov
ernment, and tho transfer of all the sovereign
powers to the Mikado, have not had the bene
licial effect on trade which was expected.
"'Ihe total absence of rules regarding the cir
culation of money," says the consul at Yoko
hama, "and of means of communication, press
on foreign commerce more heavily than ever.
At the close of tho year 1 8l8 peace seemed to
be assured and the' revolutionary movement
crashed; but already tho large demand for
steamers, arms, and war material of all kinds
gives plenty of ground for suspicion as to tho
supposed love of pease of the various princes,
and make the approach of new conflicts high
ly probable." Tl;e consul at Ilakodadi
reports that the coiibtant riots and tho unset
tled state of Japanese politics have entirely
paralyzed trade in that town, and even
agriculture and mining have been very much
neglected of late.
AVe have no wish to be too censorious,
more especially w.th reference to foreign
parts, but there is a district in the Austrian
empire in winch tho most tolerant must ad
mit there is room lor improvement. It ap
pears that in the province of Carinthia last
year the number el legitimate children born
amounted to rM,ti. fco far so good; but we
regret to add that the illegitimate births
amounted to 4 lid. It is, however, fair to
add that, no other portion of the Austrian
empire, with tho exception of the capital,
shows u number of illegitimate births equal
or even npproncl:i;:;; the above.
