Caps Island, N. J., Jnno ts, WJ.
Of all the blesmiiKS which railroads have conferred
pon the country, one of tho most Important; to
Philadelphia and rhlladclphlnrm, In the sweltering
summer nonson, Is the opportunity they enjoy, yla
the West Jersey Itallroad, of reaching this delightful
pot by a pleasant Journey of a few hours. The
route is pleasing and attractive, as It penetrates a
country which is improving very rapidly, and passes
through a number of thriving towns, including Glou
cester, Glassboro, Mlllvllle, the famous Vlneland,
and various cities in embryo, which as yet figure
morejlargely on ground plans than on the ground.
J The substantial Improvements, however, are; so
numerous, that a continual panorama of the pro
gress which has vivified Southern Jersey Is pre
ecnted, and the traveller Is led up, by steady grada
tions, to the grand attractions concentrated here.
An old gentleman informs me that when he took
Bummer trips In his youth from Philadelphia to Cape
May, tho beat mode of travel was by a lumbering
market wagon, which wended so slowly along the
eandy roads, through tho wilderness, that as mnny
days wore required for the Journey as hours now.
lie considered, however, that the pleasures of the
ecenery and bathing amply repaid his toilsome trip ;
and while he eulogizes the advantages of modern
Improvements, the prejudices of his early education,
nlted with his well-preserved vigor, still make him
refer a buff bath before dawn to tho more
decorous encounter with old ocean in the
dragRllng habiliments of a bathing-dress.
"Ah, Hr," (aid he, "the railroads are wonderfu
things. Only to think of coming down here from
Philadelphia in less than four hours, and of going
Over to the Paclllc coast in a week. When I was
young I went across the Allegheny Mountains. We
had to camp out on our way, and it took us two
months to reach Cincinnati. Then I went down to
New Orleans in a fiat-boat, and I spent three months
making my way back through the wilderness, on an
Indian pony, to Western Pennsylvania. There have
been mighty Improvements since thattlme; anl
although the West " has been so greatly
changed, the East seems . to have done
quite as much, in Its way, too. I see line houses
stretching for miles in Philadelphia, over places
which, when I was a boy, were considered danger
ous on account of snakes. And who could have
thought that down here, at Cape May, they would
liave ever built so many fine houses, introduced gas,
organized a police board, run up the prices
of land and rents to a metropolitan standard, and
that they would ever erect a building like that (point
ing to the Stockton House), which looks as grand as
the finest public buildings at Washington, and can
accommodate as many guests as all the watering
place hotels that were In the whole country wh6n I
was a boy."
I have often been told that Cape May has the
finest beach on the coast, and although my
knowledge of the subject is limited, I should not
wonder if this assertion was substantially true. The
breakers break beautifully. While old ocean cannot
' be headed off or dammed up, It is at least systemati
cally and advantageously rounded off here, so as to
ensure bathers at once Bafety and a first-class
bath on Its well protected and gently sloping beach. ;
A large number of summer guests have already
assembled here, but the preparations for a success
ful season 'are so ample that there is plenty or
room ifor thousands more, and there is no doubt
that they will come. It will be difficult to find such
- a combination of attractions at any other watering
place on the continent. The lavish hand of nature
has spread her bounties on every side, and art, en
terprise, and Industry have wonderfully Improved
and utilized them. In the background are cultivated
fields, then elegant cottages, then a cordon of
stores, restaurants, and hotels, which supply all the
luxuries uiui a bjuuihu cuuiu cruvej uicu, iu uie
front, the grand waves, with their Incessant roar
and their picturesque rollings, preach eternally the
Insignificance of man and his mightiest works when
they are contrasted with the wonders of creation;
and this lesson is heightened by the gorgeous beauty
of the clouds, which add new charms to the Impres
sive scene.
Crowds have come and still greater crowds are
coming to Cape May. Some for health, some for
pleasure, some for a day's excursion, some for a
whole season's campaign, some to inaugurate new
flirtations, and some to be haunted by the ghosts of
old ones. The pale, wan, sickly child will gain a new
lease of life, the vitality sapped by dissipation or
over-exertion will be renewed, and the gayest of
revellers will wash away the physical dregs of tkelr
frolic. SCHUVLKILL.
