BY OUR BKRIU8 EDITORt ' ' NUMBER CCXXIX. LIFE IX LODGINGS. JYom London Fun. In order to give thoroughly exhaustive ac bc count of life In lodln, we have to ninkc ex cursions beyond the strict limits of lodln-llfo Into the realm of boarding-houses. The board-lng-houee, to the logical mind, la but a loda;lng houae "with a diffcrenco"-:-or differentia, as the lamented Aldrlch Ingeniously puts it.' It is a lodging-houae, In short, with a sort of club, or common room. It bears tho same relation to the lodging-honRe that Wombwcll'f menagerie bears to the Zoological Gardens. Ia the latter, the elephant can hear tho roar of the Hon, and the monkeys know the voices of the cockatoos. In the former, the animals all live under each other's observation. The lion sees the elephant po through the degrading performance of ring ing a bell for gingerbread nuts; but then the elephant sees the lion knocked about by a negro "Lion King." And the monkeys look on they cannot be subjected to any performance that can lower them in tho eyes of their fellow brutes; and the cockatoos chatter they are be neath the contempt of tho big beasts. But the -worst of it Is, that the monkeys, on tho strength of Imitating humanity, and the cockatoos, be cause they can chatter lu human tonguo, set themselves up as the cream of society ! That is tho worst of a boarding-house. All the inhabitants, being poor, live in a scrambling and petty sort of way; but those who ape the possession of means arc always sneering at the honestly hard-np. Give mc says the philoso pher who pens this tho dire straits of a solitary lodging to the affected independence of a full boarding-house ! But it is time we should sur rey the creatures in our menagerie. Here you observe the lion of tUc establish ment. He is an old buck in reality; but he and all his fellow-boarders think him a Hon. Tho ingle Jadies who are old enough to know omo thins of the world without any risk of being held precocious think him a sad dog. He has pink notes waiting him on the break fast-table has been known to dine (with a bou net) at Richmond and was discovered flirting with the young lady in a pastrycook's shop by two of the dragons of prudery specially retained at Fuzby Mansion. (The boarding-house under notlco is two private houses rolled into one, and rejoices in tho distinguished title of Fuzby Man sion, taking its name from the retired butler who if I may use the term Inaugurated It.) The old buck is really a harmless old being, who delights to be considered a naughty one. The pink notes come from his sisters. The flirtation at the pastrycook's cost no more than a penny bun and a bottle of lemonade. The dinner at Richmond is, I ear, a pure Action. His naughti ness like his cigars Is a cheap enjoyment. His most expensive habit is a coat with fur facings but it has seen many winters, and has almost "worked its passage" by this time. mm$mm 'Hn These are the two denr young things that set down our old buck as a monster of iniquity, but don't love him the less for it. The fair curled beauty is Miss Spratt, whoso silky mou stache and .beard are tho envy of young Mogg (to be hereafter mentioned). The other beauty is Miss Snook, an intellectual bciug. The sole employment of these dear souls Is scandal. They hatch-up the most Breadful stories about nil the other boarders, and eouflde them to one another. Do they scandalize each other ? ; Yes ! in. confidence to tho Major's wife, of whom aore anon. Spratt and Suook both live by divi dends and the abuse of an unappreclative male ex. Each dreams of hooking the old buck, and ne has even gone so far as to angle for young Mogg Shall I say which? Not i This is young Mogg. He looks like a fool and let me add that he Is incapable of deceiving yon, so that he doesn't look like the thing he is not. The old buck once induced him to smoke a cigar but it is the only dissipation he has ever been known to Indulge in and he suffered for it I ' He is a very subordinate clerk in an In surance office, and would be dismissed to-morrow if ho were not the poor relation of a director who would have to support him out of Uj own fwUl it he. cold. not, SSi Uv tympany IB!! to do it. 1 oung Mogg Jas a taste for llternttire, having contributed versos, under tho pseu donym of "Ogom," to tno "roots corner 01 the little paper published in mo smau town where he used to live with his mother (whom no helps to support) before he camo to tho giddy metropolis. He has been twice taken' to tho theatre by the director, and has thence Imbibed a longing to be a burlcsquc-wrlter. Ho once got up an extravaganza at Fuzby Mansion, called Goody Two Shoes, In which Suook and Spratt were hero and heroine -(and 8nook was rather disappointed that she could not appear In tights, as tho "Prince"); but tho other boarders invited some outside friends to swell the audience, who laughed so incessantly that Mogg became dimly conscious that the laughter was more than the piece fairly deserved. , This Is Major Bigglesby's wife, and below is Major Bigglcsby, H. F. I put tho couple in this order out of an inherent respect for the rules of precedence. Apart from the fact that Mrs. B. Is practically tho head of tho family, she once had an aunt who married the younger brother of a Scotch nobleman. Mrs. B. is the common re ceptacle of the scandals Snook and Spratt invent about each other, and lives in a sort of perpe tual mental goose-skin in consequence. As the Major will, In his gallant old soldier style, occa sionally flirt with those giddy young things, her soul is sorely vexed. When she catches him at it she calls him to her side, thus: "B., dear !" a pause "B., my love! "another pause "B.l" and then tho Major comes at once, lie's a good old boy, and bears his disappoint ments and hardships with a silence, that sheds on hini more nobility than Mrs. B.'s distant con nection with the Scotch peerage does on her. His only failing is an addiction to whisky-aad-water, which warms him up to the relation of anecdotes that make the old buck chuckle, and cause Mogg to blush up to his parting. This poor lady is tho widow of a professional man. He paid so much in income tax iu the wear and tear of his brain as would have pur chased a comfortable annuity for her and her child when he Was killed in a railway accident. He ought to have injured in "Tho Accidental,'' of course but wucu a man nas to Keep up a position suitable to his profession, and must pay from ten to sixteen pounds a year income tax on his hard earnings, it is not so easy to spare that small four pounds for insurance. His health had been so delicate no life insurance would Lave accepted it. bo the poor little woman is living on a pittance made up of contributions from her father (a small house-ageut) and her husband's family i. e., two brothers, a lawyer in decent practice and a stockbroker. One of the pleasant amusements of Spratt and Snook Is to throw out doubts as to whether the pretty widow was ever married. Mrs. Major B. considers that she ia far too familiar with that young man Mo "she doesn't believe in those quiet ones" becauso Mogg finds the widow tho only ono who does not at some time or other snub and despise him, and because the widow treats tho respectful little fool like a weak younger brother. Tho old buck pesters her with his silly attentions, though he dare not be radc to her, having been taken to task for attempting a liberty by the Major, wuo never deals in inuendo iu her presence, and, lu fact, is quite a tame performing elephant for her sake, carrying her rather plain child about on his back wheu cu::imanded by that interest ing juvenile. Perhaps, in spite of tho scandal of Spratt and Snook, the queries of Mrs. B., and the porsccii' tions of. the buck, our little widow Is the one who is the most happy In Fuzby Mansion Mocc is attentive, tho Major polite, and her child the whole world to her. Hers Is a nature which, while it is insensible to the scandal and sneers, is peculiarly grateful for small I kind nesses. And thus ends the chronicle of Fuzby , Man sion. , The clerk of a cockney church recently mado the following announcement to the congrega tion: "You are desired to attend a meeting in the vestry at 4 o'clock, to consider on the best means of 'eating the church and to digest other matters." "I am burning to bo at tho enemy again," as the man whose physician had advised him to give up smoking remarked when ho lit a fresh cigar. vwio is me lusted woman mentioned in the Bible ?
