N E ff.T OltKl SMS. From Our Own Correspondent. Nrw Tom, Jane IT, ISfit. Jtm Pink you've heard of Jim? was certainly nerer more in Ms glory than he was on Tuesday evening, when Jay Gould came trotting down to the Chambers street wharf with General Grant leaning on his arm. He was dressed as a commodore Time, not General Grant and his face was unntuoiis with the Best attending a well-earned popularity. Who shall blame his weakness for stocks and steam boats? He works hard enough to deserve the calclum llght splendor that surrounds him. lie Is a moio. dramatic man of business, a sensational plodder, the romanticist of routine, a practical Idealist, and the only Immortality his soul Is fit for is a Mohammedan heaven, with a stock exchange next door. Mr. Curtin sails to-day for Russia. At several times In his life he has looked as though ho were a near relative of old Dr. Sands-of-llfe, and as though the sands were quite run out; but he has picked up again amazingly, and doubtless, in the eiTulgenco of Ills ministership, has forgotten all about thoio neu ralgic times when he canvassed Pennsylvania anil addressed the peoplo as "your next Governor." Mrs. Lander was likewise among the passengers, her tragic brows arched not unpleasantly in anticipation of London triumphs. Since Mrs. Lander aspires to be the EngllHh translation of Itlstori free transla tionand since Miss llateman will luive left London ilesolated by the time she commences operations there, perhaps her success will rival that of her younger days. Have you forgotten the Wickedest Man in New York ? lie has forsaken his Water-street den, and Is keeping a temperance grocery store. Ills nose is less rubicund than formerly more of a water and less of a rum-and-water color. He Is experiencing all the peevishness and ennui of a great man whose greatness has died before him, like a Npurgeon with dwindled congregations, or an actor performing to empty boxes. He is no longer the wickedest man. He Is only the man that used to be the wickedest. On the morning of next Saturday week one of tlu most aristocratic weddings of the season is to be celebrated at the Church of the Ascension, at the corner of Tenth street and Fifth avenue. The bride is Miss Julia Tyler, daughter of Mrs. John Tyler, and the bridegroom Mr. William II. Spencer. The sctBon at Newport commences on Tuesday, although one of the principal hotels, the Ocean House, will not be opened until to-morrow week. The Atlantic House already accommodates more than 2W guests, and all the summer cottages are fast filling np, mostly with New Yorkers. On Monday, when I was there, I likewise saw a large sprinkling of Fhlla delphlans, whose numbers during previous seasons have disputed the palm with those of citizens from Other places. Everybody thought last evening we were in for another storm. To be sure, the sky was perfectly serene, but indistinct rumblings were heard In the northeast. Prudent people sclxed their umbrellas on the impulse of the moment, and half took their water-proofs from the nail. A second thought, how ever, dispelled the Illusion, and a smile broke over the face of the population. After all, it was not the rum blings of a thunder-storm, it was merely the echoes of the Boston Jubilee. As a rule, I am not very well posted in horse-flesh, but there is said to be on Long Island a half-brother to Mr. Bonner's Dexter that is making great time, and is under private training. It is not to be expected that the Philadelphia reader will remember all the railroad accidents which occur in the neighborhood of New York. Perhaps, however, he will remember the one that happened about a week ago on the Long Island Kail road. As In tho case of the train that was bearing General Grant and suite hltherward, the accident was caused by a cow being ran over. In the words of the local poet, "By the cow-catcher caught, she flew sky high." Immediately after the accident, some fat-eyed preachers gathered together and improvised a prayer-meeting, the burden or which was that they were so glad they were left, while so many less deserving wretches had been taken. Their thanks givings were scarcely at an end when the distracted owner of the dead cow ran up, breathing general denunciations aitd threats of lawsuit. Whilst he was in the midst of his harangue, a German ac costed htm: "Whose cow is dis?" "Mine," exclaimed the enraged drover. "How mooch yon sell him for? I pees a pootcher. I geers you dventy-five tollars for Mm. I sells hlin for beefsteak, und makes der monlsh." The bargalu was concluded on the spot. The spilt cow was sold. Tho prayer-meeting wa dis banded, and a railroad accident supplied some of the hotels with choice porter-house. The steamship Cuba, of the Cnnsrd, arrived here yesterday afternoon, with dates to the 6th Instant. They say that Prince Alfred is to come here. I hope so. It will give Fifth avenue something to talk aiout, while she Is at the watering places. West Point for the last few days has been beset by balls and beauties. Mrs. Corlies and Mrs. L. Jerome have taken cottages at Coszens' Hotel. Mrs. Judge Roosevelt is visiting ex-Minister lllgelow's family there, and a niece of ex-Mayor Gunther is now the reigning belle in that quarter. She has set the new fashion of wearing Jockey-hats at breakfast, dinner, and supper, and all the cadet swear by her. It Is expected that the new labor bureau, In the Flympton buildings, at the corner of Stuyvesant and Ninth streets, will be a great success. It aims to procure labor for all applicants irrespective of their occupations, and since it charges no commission, it neutralizes to a considerable extent the barbarities Of the landshatk system. Though yesterday was the flint rlav of its oDeratlon. there were more than a hundred applications, mostly Irish and Gorman, In cluding a few heads of families who needed domes tics. The servant-gal panic, by-the,by, is Just a little worse than usual. Notwithstanding the deal failure Which the hotel Jeemscs have made of It, Biddy seems resolved to hava her strike too, and many is the kitchen in which there is walling and gaaslilng of teeth. Irma and Desclauzas do not Agree at the Fifth Avenue Opera House. Both of them are fair and Xat, and neither of them is fortyj and seeing that each la possessed of a good voice and maimers fitted to please the most exigeant taste, it is a pity that they had to quarrel. Desclauzas is a novelty as "Po juillo," ami Irma an antiquity as "La Perlehole." But then, anyhow, I do not presume they would have long preserved the amenities of the footlights under auv conditions. It has been said that there are three things woman cannot do: they cau- not tie up bundles,- they cannot carry um brellus, they cannot sharpen lead-pencils. But by my unaided vision I have discovered several other feats they cannot perform. They cannot enter a railway car while another woman is getting out. Men in such cases are sure to pass each other with out mutual annoyance. Women never do. They bolt "bang up" against one another in pure spite, ' and sometimes have to be separated by the con ductor. And they cannot live together cither, even throughout the brief spun of the footlight s exist ence. They are ready to scratch each other s tender eyes out because the one gets a hulr's-breadrh more applause than her neighbor. Such is life. Irma and IK sclauy.as point the moral. The 7th Regiment is ge'ting ready to Ukc its July excursion. It will go up North river by special boat toAlbnnvaud Troy, and thence to Saratoga, liu Vnvorof Trov has already formally invited Colon'! Knimous Clark to accept the hospitalities or tli.it city and the Colonel will doubtless ai cent. Mr. Henry Woodruff, of Jamaica, lately elope with auother man's wife, but about ten days ago was apparently seized with a lit of repentance, r turned home, forsook his Ashta'oth, begged his wile's pardon, was forgiven, and ta'ieu ba :k to the conjugal bed and bosom. It now appears, however, that nil h wan utter was the conjugal "sumps." aul that he has made on with these, and, like the washed ow, returned to his wicieuness. Wholesale complaints have been lodged against the legul "shysters" of the Tombs Police Court. They have been In the habit of receiving money for n-rvli es that were never performed. There is hardly r,u f tiiwn lawyers but what is a deeldedly-nmrkui v.. YnrkiHin. They deserve a letter to tliein- fcelves, and some day they Khali have I tv hen opportunity sharpens ihc memory of THE DAILf EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, MUSICAL. AI PRAWATIC. At tttk Wai.nct Mr. Simon Hassler will have a benefit this evening, when he will make his flrst ap pearnnrs on the stage as "Smith" in the farce of A ii'i Wr Jlasfler. from his seat In the middle of the orchestra, has been an attentive stu dent of acting for many years past, and he has de veloped some origin! ideas of his own, which he Jpw proposes to put Into practlca It is expected that his "Smith" will be a combination of all that Is great in dramatic art, and Mr. Hasslnr will doubtless play In a style to make the hair of the oldest play goer stand on end. The programme on this most interesting occasion will consist of tho oomcdy of She Stoop to Conquer, a grand concert by Keek's Band, No. 1, and the farce of My Neinhbor's Wife. To-morrow evening Mr. Thomas J. Hemphill, the popular managor of the Walnut, will havo a benelit, when a fine bill will be presented. AT tub Akch the comedies or All That Olitteri it Hot Gold and Katharine and Petruchio will be per formed this evening. Wa sre glad to hear that the arrangements ror this affair are progressing satisractorlly. Mr. Donnelly Is a popular manager and agent, and during tho engagement or the Galton troupe he has done much to place them In a favor able light before tho public, and to make the Thoatre Comique n popular place or resort. We hopo tho proposed benefit will be a brilliant success, and as Mr. Donnelly has a host of warm personal and pro fessional friends, we have no doubt that it will be.
