And it may be the cause, for aught w know, Of a pleasantor temperature hero below. But it looks just now, for all the world, Like Marvin's Spherical Sake, so whirled On its wheels around (not the wheels of the sun) That you look in the door, when the lock's undone. And speaking of locks, the old Gordian knot Was a mere child's toy to the puzzles we've got ; Alexander would jump in the river Styx If be saw the ingenions devices we Sx To vanquish the robber of modern times, And lock up our eagles, and dollars, and dimos; Then weep he might, that a globe so small He should never be able to conquer at all. If you want a Safe and who wants it not ? Go to Marvin's ohkat warehouse ; that's the spot. No. 721 Chesnut street. 1HB G HOVER & BAKJSH SEWINO MACHINE ES TA BUSH UK NT. There are few business establishment in Philadelphia which so well illustrate the mercantile progress of our city during the last decade as the Philadelphia branch of the Grover A Baker Sewing Machine Company, now located at No. 730 Chesnut street. The hitter has, in fact, grown into a reoognized Philadelphia institution, the popularity and success of which are doubtless equally due to the superior excellence of the Gro ver 4 Baker Machines, and the admirable and highly satisfactory manner in which the business of the house is conducted. It will probably be remem bered by some of our readers that the original advent of the Grover A Baker Sewing Machine Company in this city was in a small office up stairs, on Fourth street, ear Chesnut, more than sixteen years ago. From thence they removed to Chesnut street, below Fifth, and Anally, in 1H57, their present locatiou. No. 730 Chesnut street, became tho scene of their extensive operations. During all this period the busi ness of the firm has steadily increased. The Grover A Bakor instruments, which began to be spoken well of, have constantly grown in popular favor, not only maintaining their original pre-emincnoe over all other machines, but annually extending thoir fame by additions to their mechanical perfections and adaptability to all kinds of plain and ornamental sewing. Considering that the competitive rivalry in this branch of our manufactures has been unprecedented, the fact that the Grover A Bakor machines have continued the ac knowledged masters of the held is the highest proof of their intrinsic merits. The business of the company is now enormously lurgo. One hundred and fifty machines per day have, for many months past, been the average production of their immense manufactory, and, evon with these gigantic resources, the concern is often unuhlo to meet with desired promptness the popular demand through the agencios of the company, which now number about thirty, established in all putts of the Unitoi feUtes, also in Great Britain and Australia. The Philadelphia Iioubo, at No. 730 Chesnut streot, is one of the most prominent and lucrative of thoir various branches, and is undor tho superintendence of George W. F.ddy, F.sq., who has been connected with this com pany during the last eleven years, and under whose enter prising management it has attained a name and fame second to no other business establishment in Philadelphia. The entire plan, mode, and dtail of the buuinoas show the potency of bruins, and if any censure is clue to the City of Brotherly liove on the scoro of nun enterprise in general, it is certainly not due to No. 73) Chesnut street in particular. We might fill a score of columns in descanting upon the peculiar merits and mechanical advantages of the Grover A Baker machines, but that is nnnocessary. Our readers, or many of them at least, are personally familiar with the singular advantages which these machines possess over all others in use, and the entire press of the country has teemed with the deserved praises of their excellencies and the high testimonials awarded to the Grover A linker Com pany, by the proper committees, in both Kurope and America, to whom the question of comparative merit in sewing machines has been submitted. Still, whut is of more value to us than all other testi monials, is the testimony of our own permnal experience. Between the piano in our bouso und the Grover A Baker Sewing Machine, the question of indispensability is about equally balanced. The writer's bettor half plays on both equally well, and while the charm of music is unquestion ably in favor of the former, the latter contributes most to that domestic melody which springs from iuilustrious fin gers, a contented mind and a happy heart. The machines referred to are simple in construction, easily learned, aud as easily run, are almost noiseless, and their stitch is so elastic that it will wash without breaking, which we be lieve can be said of few if any other machines. That the Grover A Baker Instruments, with their retisueof splen did and invaluable attachments, are the best for family use, we verily believe ; and it is with this convict iou that we 'recommend their introduction iuto every well-regulated uouseuold-iVM. In presenting to a generous and appreciative public this new series, we teel that we are more fully meeting the popular demand for select music at s low price. To proprrhi compnimte A und thereby to stimulate native talent is a cardinal foiituruof our undertaking ; while to pluco upon tho Piano rich gums, requiring more space than the Half-Dime Series affords, induces tile in auguration of tho Dime Series, which it is believed will uccomplit-h both of these aims. The abundant success which has crowned the advent of the Half-Dime Series removes any hesitancy we might, have felt in placing this new series before the public. Both will be published weekly, and the numbers multiplied rapidly as possible.
